Orbicam driver for Windows Vista

More Vista worries here.
I have noticed a HUGE demand for “Acer OrbiCam driver” in my swicki. We’re talking a LOT of people: 759 searches (number 1 spot) compared to 130 for the second-placed “customer support” request.
I have found this link to DriverZone.com for the Acer OrbiCam driver. According to this page, the supported systems are:
Operating Systems: Win 98, Win 98SE, Win ME, Win 2K, Win XP, Win Server 2K3, Win Vista
Hope this helps if you’re in trouble.
UPDATE 1 (request): For all of you reading this article I need to know if the solution at DriverZone.com actually works. Can you leave a reply and let me know?
UPDATE 2 (request): Same thing applies to the Device Manager solution.
UPDATE 3: Scroll down for what might be a solution you didn’t know you had… (thanks Richard) or save yourself the time and click here.
UPDATE 4: I have closed comments to this post as the argument has moved on. Please read this post for a solution. Thanks.

Hi Tom,
I’m sorry to hear about your misadventures with Vista. I wish I could help directly but I have very little experience with Vista (none).
I’m hoping that sooner or later someone will post a solution that works for everyone, or at least comment on the success/failure of my driver recommendations.
For now, the only thing I can recommend is you try the links to re-install the drivers directly from Acer.

I just bought a new Aspire 5612ZWLMi (with Vista Home Premium) yesterday, and was pleased to see it had a built-in cam (a nice unexpected bonus). Today, however, it doesn’t work. The drivers are all up-to-date, and it works from DV Wizard in Acer Arcade Deluxe, but when I try to use the actual Orbicam function I just get a message saying “Acer Orbicam Application has stopped working”. Any ideas?

Hi Lee,
This is becoming a bit of a habit (I mean the Orbicam failure).
Before you throw it away in a fit of justified fury, have you tried the Device Manager solution I posted earlier in response to a similar problem?
Judging by the sheer numbers of people looking for a solution to the same problem (usually after the upgrade - not with Vista pre-installed) I think it’s fair to say that Windows Vista does not get along with the OrbiCam.
To put this into perspective, have a look at the Swicki requests over the last 30 days:
orbicam driver 1105
orbicam driver bison 513
orbicam 1.0.0 driver 310
orbicam drivers 133
Which far outnumber the requests for the previous champion, Acer support (118).
You’re not alone.
Let me know if the Device Manager trick works.

My Acer 3680 Aspire Orbicam + Vista Home has same symptoms described above. Downloaded the Acer Orbicam “Bison” driver from http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html. Install runs & rebots, but nothing changes - I’m not sure if the install completed sucessfully (I had to reboot a 2nd time as device Manager indicated I didn’t even have a camera device). On investigating the download zip, I discovered the program file “LiveCa07.exe” in the zip directories. This program DOES work. Upon further investigation, I found this file was pre-installed in the Window directory: c:\windows\BisonC07, but just not linked to any shortcuts on the desktop or programs. Suggest that others first look for LiveCa07.exe in the Windows directory before downloading the 9Mb driver from Acer.

Where did you download the driver from?
I have noticed that the URL above in Richard’s reply (http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html) doesn’t work, although the address is correct. This link does.
If you get into trouble, just let the page load completely, then click on “Driver downloads” and that should take you back to the correct page where you can find your notebook model.

Then I find Bison_v6_96_0_06 from acer web site which location I dont remember (latin america may be) and now it works and shown as acer orbicam in device manager. The software has minimal features. Hi Tjorven,
First: don’t panic. Everyone here seems to have this problem
Second: I’m sorry the answer is in English.
Third: I’m not a technician, but I’d sure like to help!
If you’re going to do this on your own for the very first time, before you do anything else make yourself a cup of tea and relax. What you have to do is find the faulty OrbiCam program, delete it (or repair it) and reinstall it. Simple!
But… because the problem could have a number of causes, there is more than one possible solution…
OK, first you need to find the Orbicam driver under the “Windows hardware device” menu. You can find this by right mouse clicking on “My Computer” and selecting “Properties” (sorry but I don’t know the commands in French). Once the “System Properties” window opens, you need to select the “hardware” tab. There you will see “Device Manager”. Click on this button and a new window will open.
If you have a problem you might already see a yellow triangle on the Acer OrbiCam. If not, look for “Imaging Devices” and click on it twice. What should appear below is “Acer OrbiCam”.
Right click “Acer OrbiCam” and then select “Uninstall”. Close everything and reboot. Windows should reinstall it automatically for you. If this doesn’t work, then you might have the same problem as everyone else and need to re-install the driver. You will find the driver at this link (this is specific for the Aspire 7000).
Download the driver (either the “Camera Driver Bison Ver. 5.0.0.10f” or “Camera Logitech Ver. 9.4.4.1084”) and save it somewhere you will remember it.
Then repeat the steps above (Device Manager) until you arrive at the Device Manager screen and you can see the Acer OrbiCam. Select it, right mouse click and select “Update driver”. You should have the option to install the software automatically, and choosing this option should resolve the problem. If it doesn’t repeat this last step but choose to “install the driver from a list or specific location” (you must select the folder where you saved the file).
I hope this helps.
Michael
PS for everyone else, the solution is (I hope) the same, but you will find your specific drivers on Acer’s support home page.

Hi Joe,
…”but still no luck”?
This must be frustrating to say the least for you. I had a look at the drivers download page on the Acer support site for your model and see that both Bison and Logitech drivers are available so I’m assuming they’re both needed. I just wish I could look you straight in the face and tell you what for.
Have you tried looking to see if Device Manager shows something wrong? If you don’t know how to get there in Windows Vista it’s explained in this link.
In the meantime I will try and get some official answers tomorrow and will get back to you if I receive something that might help.

I just bought my Acer Aspire 3680 and had Vista installed three weeks ago. When I bought it the salesperson told me that the correct driver for the orbicam for Vista is not out yet but it would be in about a month. He urged me to return to the store to have it installed, but he said that Acer should put the driver on its site as well. (I’ve tried the other drivers and I was hoping that I’d find the driver now, but still no luck.)
Not great news, but I hope that helps.

I tried your solution but it never worked. The Bison Driver does not work at all. However when I modified the target on properties of the Orbicam Icon to direct it to C:\windows\BisonCam\LiveCam.exe to original Microsoft Drivers, it works. Perhaps this driver has limited options but it is the driver Acer Installed in the Original Image.

I’ve followed the stuff on ‘The Acer Guy’s page, and I’m still having no joy. I’ve read somewhere that it works if you create another account with no password, and no administrator properties, it works. I’ve tried that, but it hasn’t loaded an image. It’s probably because I haven’t rebooted my system yet, but that’s a temporary fix I’ve found.

Hi SL,
If you and I are looking at the same program (OrbiCam) it’s the same as the Logitech program I use on my desktop at home. There are two buttons below the image: the one on the left says “take a picture” the one on the right “record a video”. Try that.

Given the number of people looking for ways to get the Acer OrbiCam working, it bears repeating in simple language. Just go to the “c:\windows\BisonC07″ directory and run the programme “LiveCa07.exe”. Create a shortcut to it on your desktop. It’s not going to help you win an Oscar, but it does allow you to record and save simple video from the OrbiCam.

Hi Fobi,
I know the design and layout of this blog is a bit flaky but you should have looked around a bit more
The OrbiCam issue has affected quite a number of users and the cause seems to be the Vista Upgrade software.
However, the problem is that there are almost a dozen different types of OrbiCams so you’ve got to make sure you’re installing the right one for your specific laptop.
Have a look at this post and see if it helps.

For those still wondering how to get your Acer OrbiCam - Logitech to work, I have searched the world over with far too many times failing to get my Aspire 5670 to recognize and work with its built-in webcam. But recently I was fortunate enough to finally find out that installing the latest drivers didn’t work at all whereas a particular old one worked well both on XP and Vista OS.
You should go to this link:
http://www.driverstock.com/Acer-Aspire-5670-driver-download/4-21-12877-94131/index.html
Download the zip file then save all contents in a folder that you will browse to use later.
Do not use the setup.exe from that folder. It won’t work… Just go to Device Manager and Uninstall your current driver of Acer OrbiCam. Then click, Update Driver, and point to the folder of those unzip files. Let it install then restart your computer.
When the computer restarts go to Skype or any communication/camera software you’re using and set the video camera. Voila, this time you will see the video coming on to the screen after about 10-15 seconds of black screen.
I have to thank that site for the download.
Last but not least, please remember that this one driver (version 9.4.0.1120) works very well on both XP and Vista… You don’t need to update it to any other higher version!
As for other Acer Aspire models, just check other pages from that website… I have no way of knowing since I only have my model. But I think you will be able to make use of your OrbiCam once again.
Best of Luck and Enjoy Video Chatting!
Numo
PS I think if you get only that driver file (version 9.4.0.1120) from the link after unzipping, please see whether putting only that driver in a new folder and install in Device Manager will get your camera to work too. If so, it will be nice for you to just upload that driver file and paste your link here so that others can just download this file and not all others from the link above.

Michael Walsh (Check me out!) said …
Hi there Nolan,
Does this message only come up when you click on OrbiCam? Does it work with Messenger? or Skype?
I know you have XP Pro and you might even be able to address the problem simply by looking to see what’s what in Device Manager but in any case have a look at this thread.
If under Device Manager there’s a problem with software (yellow triangle) and you’re certain you need to reload the drivers, then head over to the official Acer driver download page which for your notebook you’ll find here.
There’s only one file you need to download which is OribiCam_944_1084_A(WHQL).
If Device Manager can’t see the camera, and the same message comes up with Messenger or Skype, then you might have a hardware problem (Acer support).
