Hey Laura,

I was being ironic… it wouldn’t make much sense for a company that DEPENDS on the sales of competitively-priced, fully-featured notebooks (i.e. with small profit margins) to actually stall delivery when demand is so high and the buying public so fickle (read that as a compliment).

As with all electronic components you’re going to get duff models that need replacing. It’s just statistics/plain bad luck. I personally LOVE Amazon’s return policy (no questions) which is why I put up the ad on the side bar in the first place, but hey, that’s just me.

Sadly I won’t be getting any information out of anyone at least untill next week as most managers are preparing to head off to Spain for the annual global conference this week-end so I’m not even going to bother sending off a mail as I know it’ll just get lost in the preparations.

Nope, sadly not. Having finally sorted something out, it seems that they are not getting any stock of the turbo memory one now. So back to the drawing board.

I think Acer are actually “stalling on delivery” because nowhere else (Comet, Tesco, Amazon) seem to have any in stock either. I’ve been considering ordering from laptops direct but it’s really disappointing to hear about their bad service.. I’m guessing you didn’t pay extra for them to check the first laptop?

No. This is all the fault of laptops direct. They have no record seemingly of having sent me the laptop I now have, or indeed having received the one I sent back to them. Add to that the fact it takes 45 minutes to get them on the phone and I am not a happy chap. Note to others, don’t buy from these people!

This is going to sound like me washing Acer’s hands of all responsibility I know, but what you said is unfortunately correct, unless of course for some reason Acer UK is stalling on delivery and Laptops Direct are passing on the ripple-effect of low supply to its customers.
Either way, take it back. It’s not what you want or what you paid for is it?

Yeah, it is not ideal! The main problem I think is with laptops direct though, their service is hardly amazing.

Not one to mince my words, that’s a real pain in the arse!
I think nearly everyone understimated the demand for the 5920, which is great news for all invloved except the poor customer who gets messed around when supply runs dry.
Stand your ground. Get what you want, or change retailer and, if necessary, manufacturer.

Hm, getting less and less impressed all the time. Having sent the 5920 I got from laptops direct (the turbo memory version) back to them because I was unhappy with the bright red pixel in the middle of the screen, I recieved an email saying they were out of stock and offering one of the other 5920s instead. If I did nothing then they would send me what I ordered at the end of the week. Imagine my suprise when they sent me a 5920H instead. Now I am going to have to get that back to them and try and get what I wanted in the first place. Vostro 1700 is looking better and better….

For those of you wondering when the 5920 will be available in Tesco.. my local store says out of stock until 17/09/07 (which is today), so I’m hoping they’re in stock later today or tomorrow. May not be the same for every Tesco in the UK though.

Also.. I heard that the turbo memory doesn’t do much for laptops and will probably need replaced at some point. Any truth in this?
