Tom’s US-spec Aspire 5920 review

This review of the Acer 5920-6313 is written specifically for TheAcerGuy.com. The reason I mention this is because TheAcerGuy already has an excellent user review on the European version of the 5920 and I do not intend to cover all the same ground in my review as was already done by Jing Yeow since they are in the same case and very similar. Rather, I will highlight the differences between the model he reviewed and my model, the 6313, which is available in the U.S.A. from Best Buy. I will also go inside the computer with an eye to upgrades.
At First Glance: It’s sleek. That was my first impression of the Gemstone design. When it is open the top of the screen sits lower than one would expect of a laptop of this size. This is due in part to the down-sweep of the case just before the hinges for the screen, and, I expect, an optical illusion created by the large keyboard area and smooth curves of the machine. The outside is classy and smooth like an old-time gangster or a Man-In-Black.
The much screamed about indefinably-whitish interior color is very pleasing to the eyes; almost calming. I like the way it looks and I think that most of the pictures I’ve seen on the net do not do the Gemstone justice. I’ve also heard it criticized as a tad heavy. This is something I simply do not understand. At 6.6 pounds (their spec I didn’t weigh it) it feels light and easily carried to me. But hey, I’m in the military and the uniform I wear to work every day weighs more than this laptop.
My Reason for choosing this computer: Bang-for-the-buck. Just that simple. I’m a family man, I’m in the military (notoriously not the best paying job for some reason), and I needed to replace my old machine which had died a sudden and horrible death. So it was down to what was available on or about July 7th and the wife had further limited me to a budget of approximately $1000. I spent two days surfing the web researching and comparing. The results: specs to price nothing else was even close.
At that time I didn’t care two wits about the design. I made my decision and ducked in on the Lucky Sevens sale Best Buy was running and saved myself a tidy $200 by placing my online order in the last hours of the last day of the sale. Even had I hesitated that extra few seconds and lost out on the sale, I would have still been happy with the value for price (assuming I had been able to squeeze an extra $200 out of the wife). Seriously, I looked at Toshiba, Dell, Gateway, Alienware, Sager, you name the brand I looked, and for $999-1300 I could find nothing to compare to the Acer 5920-6313 specs.
What the American 5920 brings to the table: Ok, first off the processor is only 1.5 GHz (Core2 Duo T5250), so yeah it is a bit slower than the European model. The Wi-Fi card is only an Intel Pro ABG variety, and not draft N. It has no blue tooth and may or may not have turbo memory (I’m still trying to figure that out). The Best Buy website mentions Turbo Cache memory in conjunction with the video card but nowhere else.
Another website I browsed through mentioned that it could take advantage of the on-board Robson turbo memory, but I do not see the controllers for it in the device manager. The install.exe for the turbo cache memory DOES exist in the drivers folder, so someone out there tell me, do I have it or not? I don’t know. It has a fully functional 5-in-1 media card reader, good for me since my digital camera uses a supported card.
Some of the European models appear to have a non-functioning dummy slot in this place. Despite the fact that Best Buy says it does not have a Firewire port, it does. I have not tested it for functionality and it may be a dummy, but the device manager states quite clearly that it has a “Ricoh OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 host controller” so I guess that settles that. She sports a 4800 mAH 8-cell Lithium-Ion battery for Energizer Bunny-like endurance.
And lastly, the American computer gets a Toshiba Dual Layer +/- RW&HD DVD ROM (Burns dual layer and +/- DVDs but is read-only for HD DVDs). This drive lets you take full advantage of the HDMI port on the left side because, it occurs to me, the native screen resolution means the HMDI is pretty much the only way for you to REALLY enjoy HD DVD with this machine.
What I’ve done with it: Not as much as I would like so far. I have played about 5 hours of Doom 3, and about 1 hour of Thief Deadly Shadows. I know these two games are not exactly the most demanding on the market anymore, but they are the toughest games I have. On max settings for both games this machine didn’t even break a sweat (well, once I turned AA up to x16 on Doom there was a minor drop in frame rate, but it was still quite playable).
Seriously, it was barely even warm. Jing said that his model stayed warm over the left hand side of the keyboard while word processing. Maybe that’s because he has a 2.0 GHz processor to my 1.5, but my gemstone stayed cool as a cucumber. The only time it warmed up at all for me was when it was charging the battery hard after I used it up on a test.
What test? Why I put in a DVD (not HD) and watched a movie (Hellboy) and then I watched some Japanese Anime. I enjoyed right at 3 hours of constant DVD video in a non-air-conditioned room at 88 degrees F. on my ship before it warned me that is was about to shut down. It was also a pleasant room-temperature to the touch. While playing Doom and Thief, I noticed that it was very easy to tell which direction a sound was coming from (very important in those games). I know the speakers have been praised by many before me, and I agree with them, the sound on this machine is excellent. I also hooked up my 22” flat LCD desktop monitor to it and cranked the resolution up to something ridiculous and she took it like a champ. No problem there, just need the screen.
Undressing the Gemstone: I will be uploading pictures along with this review, hopefully they will make it and you get to see her in all her naked glory, but if not use your imagination. After shutting down, removing the power cord and the battery, I’m ready to open her up. About two-thirds of the back of the case is one removable lid. The first thing I noticed was that the lid retains its screws.
YAY! No need to worry about losing them. It also snaps very easily loose to a gentle tug around the edges of the lid. The first component to reveal itself is the fan in the upper right hand corner which quickly led me, via its heat-pipe to the heat-sink and the processor below. I have no heat-sink compound so I will not be removing the heat-sink. My first concern was the wire that is threaded right through the fins of the heat-sink. I would not have thought that to be a good place for the wire coming from my Wi-Fi card. The hard drive is easy to identify in the bottom right hand corner and the RAM sticks are stacked square in the middle of the whole thing.
I was a little concerned at first about the lack of space behind the bottom RAM chip due to the leg of some bit of unnecessary-looking support piece that seems not to be used for anything hugging up close to the back of my RAM. That was, until I undid the clasps on the RAM and it popped up obediently to a 45 degree angle to assist me in its removal. Sweet! Upgrading the RAM will be easy. I spent a good half-hour looking at this mysterious card to the right of the CPU, above the hard drive and below the fan. What is it? It has logic chips from the same manufacturer as the RAM (are they, therefore, memory?).
Could this be the vaunted Nvidia 8600m GT, or the elusive Turbo RAM? I still don’t know; can anyone clue me in? What can I say, she looks good in the nude. I see lots of room for my big ol’ fingers to move around in there if I get the urge to pimp my ‘puter, the components are easy to identify (ok not that one thing) and conveniently placed. This laptop will be easy to upgrade.
What I don’t like: Yes, there are a few things. I’m having a little bit of trouble with sticking keys on the keyboard. I just had to delete a line of J’s that volunteered their services; all in the same place. This has happened four or five times today as I played Doom or typed and it is my number one gripe. I’m also concerned about the plastic rails on the side of the DVD tray.
Maybe I’m just spoiled since my last laptop had nice metal rails and felt solid. This thing feels cheesy when I slide it open or closed. It doesn’t roll smoothly, it just sort of drags along on its plastic rails. Guess I’ll have to be careful. Like some other people, I don’t like the touch-sensitive media buttons. I have them set all the way to their least sensitive setting and I still can’t seem to avoid hitting them once in a while and getting that awful beep.
Oh well, no big deal. With a little practice I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it. Lastly, and I really feel silly complaining about this, but that’s what this section is for, I don’t like the sound and earphone jacks being in front. Yes, I know this make them easier to get at, but it also makes them in my way when I use my headphones. I would have much preferred them on the sides or even the back, which is where they would have had to go seeing how very busy the sides of this machine are.
Summary: at the end of the day not only do I like it, I really, really like it. Maybe even love it. There’s no doubt in my mind that if you want a great laptop that won’t break the bank, this laptop is an excellent choice. Even if you want a higher performance laptop, you could still buy this one and hot-rod it up to higher specs and still spend less money than you would have on a comparable computer. The screen size and resolution are the only things you can’t change and hey, you can always use an HDTV or your Desktop’s monitor.
Admittedly, if you are a power user and you have $3000+ to spend you can do better, but if you want value and bang-for-your-buck I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a better deal.

Nice review Tom, although I am still hoping for some one out there to point out some numbers (the percentage of CPU usage when viewing HD content with Pure video HD and without, FPS in a demanding dx 9 and dx 10 games like Oblivion and Lost planet).
I am very confused about choosing my laptop, should it be Dell inspiron 1520 or the Aspire 5920, I know I’ll expand my budget a bit to consider the Dell but I don’t mind as long as it doesn’t exceed the 200$.
I live in Egypt and the Aspire 5920G-302G16N costs about 1570$ (it has the 2.0 ghz cpu but not the HD dvd rom), I am still waiting for further price cuts or for the inspiron 1520 to arrive since it is not released yet in my country.
Here is why I prefer the inspiron over the Aspire:
1- It is Dell
2- More sturdy
3- Better ergonomics
4- Lower running temperature
5- Customizable
And that’s why I prefer the Aspire:
1- Better performance
2- Cheaper
3- More features
4- More stylish

MOS,
Well, I don’t have any HD DVDs right now, Maybe I’ll rent one from netflicks, so I can’t help there (at least not yet) and I don’t have any high-end games, but I can tell you that the 5920 I have did not get hot at all really. my old Sager used to dang near cook me running the simplest of games, even when running games that it had more than double the recomended specs. the old Sager I had also got hot when watching regular DVDs. On the 5920, there is a slight warmth spreading evenly across the left half of the keyboard. It feels about body-tempurature to me and is actually kind of pleasent. looking on the inside, the CPU/heatsink are directly under the “F” key of the keyboard.
I went to a local Wi-Fi Hot spot yesterday on my way home from work. my computer told me it was connected at a rate of 56 Mb/s. I don’t know how fast draft N is supposed to be, but 56M is pretty quick for my uses.
maybe this will help MOS. I was just fooling around with the Dell website and built this up. it is as close to the 5920-6313 specs as i could get it. have a look:

there are lots of choices there on Dell’s page and you could make a better computer than the one I did, for a price of course. I’m not going to yell the Dell isn’t competative, but I think given the choice again today, I’d still go with my 5920. it all comes down to your personal needs/likes. also, I don’t like Dell, but that’s just a personal thing.

Nice review Tom.
Regarding heat to quote you in your comment above
“On the 5920, there is a slight warmth spreading evenly across the left half of the keyboard. It feels about body-tempurature”
That is a definition of warm!!!
BTW, that image with the square green chip above the Hitachi Hard Drive. That is the 8600M GT graphics card.
I agree with you on the weight. The bag I carried to college weighed about 4-5kg, without being too uncomfortable. The weight on this laptop seems evenly distributed and in a laptop bag with padded straps, which I carry mine in, not too difficult at all. That said, its not a laptop to be carried in one hand, as some 12.1/14.1 inch laptops boast.
If you want to see if the weight is for you or not, just get 3; 1kg bags of sugar, and place them in a backpack ensuring all the weight is not on one side. It really isn’t that heavy.
I carry mine in a targus backpack with external hard drive, controllers, remotes, notebook mouse without any hassle.
Padded laptop bag a must. Your 5920 deserves nothing less!!
Mos, I ran a HD video called “http://us.download.nvidia.com/downloads/videos/GF8800Demoreel_High_8000.wmv” which I downloaded and ran off the PC. CPU usage throughout stays at about 32% as reported by task manager.
Jing wrote, on August 7th, 2007:
Tom, I think you have the dreaded keys of Doom. (Pun not intended) It could be a localised problem, as it isn’t widely reported.
That said, the guy seems to have the identical laptop to you.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=140556
Plus the DVD rails on the DVD rewriter are pretty flimsy. Yet, I hardly ever use the drive, except to install games, so I don’t worry about it much.
Tom wrote, on August 7th, 2007:
Jing,
no, that’s not at all the problem I’m having. what happens to me is the key is physically sticking down, the guy in that post said he would hit the key a few times and would only get one iteration of the letter. My keys depress once in a while they stay down. I haven’t had this problem since Saturday, when I wrote that, so maybe they just needed to get broke in or i may have had a little crud in there (hard to believe since it’s so new). Inspite of it being my major gripe, it is only a minor problem. on the heat issue, you said “The left hand side of the notebook stays warm through basic tasks such as word processing, or viewing pictures, but can get wildly hot when gaming.” I guess I was only trying to say that I haven’t gotten to the wildly hot, or even a reletively hot stage yet. that could be explained if you are running more demanding games, but in comparison, my old laptop got wildly hot playing games that asked for a computer with half the power I had. The 5920 showed no significant increase in heat output even when running Doom 3 at top setting with X2 AA on.
Jing wrote, on August 7th, 2007:
Yeah, I have recently updated the BIOS of the 5920 using the latest drivers on Acers European support site, and when word processing, the left hand side of the notebook remains cool. It only gets warm when gaming. Not wildly hot anymore, I think because the fan kicks in sooner.

You are worrying me more guys and making the Dell totally devoures me
(one of my relatives has just bought the Dell inspiron 6400 and the “V” key is not working at all
).
I wonder how in Gods name such silly and irritating keyboard problems happen in a laptop (NOTE: a laptop has only one keyboard
), any way I am glad to hear from Jing that the overheating problem no longer exists with the BIOS upgrade although I find it a bit risky to update my laptop’s BIOS.
Tom wrote, on August 8th, 2007:
MOS, don’t get over-excited about this sticky key. I have figured out why my J key sticks and it’s the only one doing it now. if I hit the key in the middle or bottom it doesn’t stick. the hardware is made to allow you to lift the key up and replace it or clean under, but the clasp that keeps it locked down is not holding very tight on my J. this is the sort of thing that can happen to any laptop. they all use the same hardware to mount the keys so it is certainly not design specific. I’m gonna take it in to Best Buy and see if I can get their geek squad to look at it.

Tom wrote, on August 9th, 2007:
I don’t know the answer to your last question MOS, but I would like to know. I’m not sure how to tell. will it say in the BIOS somewhere? everything else is just on the hard drive right? so, in theory, why wouldn’t you be able to install XP instead? I don’t know.
mos wrote, on August 9th, 2007:
I don’t think that installing XP would be that easy especially if the drivers of some cards are not compatible with XP (like the wireless network card or the sound card), and that’s the sort of question I was trying to ask “Are the drivers of all the aspire hardware compatible with XP”?
Jing wrote, on August 10th, 2007:
The quick answer is NO. But there are workarounds, too detailed to discuss here. For instance, you may have to download XP drivers that were made for another Acer model.

When I click on the Bluetooth button it shows “No Device” and no bluetooth adapter is installed in device manager. I feel pretty mislead on this feature as it was advertised and includes software called Acer VCM that is supposed to work with it. Can anyone clear this up?

Do you have the Turbomemory model? If so, you don’t have Bluetooth. Have a look here to see the two models available in the UK.
All is not lost though, you can pick up the phone and yell to no avail, or take me up on my offer…

Hi,
I bought a UK 5920g 302g16n. Whilst I am thrilled with specs I’m gutted about the case. When you close the lid the rubber foot on the screen rests on the left touchpad button, depressing the key when you close it. A minor gripe with this is that it will cause unnecessary wear. But it is also causing a groove on the base to appear, made by the edge of the screen.
I returned it to Comet and was shocked that, initially, they didn’t want to help! I phoned Acer who told me that it was a duff batch and a replacement would be fine. So I got Comet to replace it. But alas the same problem with the replacement. You wouldn’t believe this laptop was designed by BMW Designworks!!! I have seen some of the other gemstone range and they don’t have this problem because the rubber feet are in a different place. This must be a common problem but I can’t find anything on it.
Also, with my replacement I had the same sticky key problem with ‘d’. This time I’ve sent it to Acer for them to look at.

hi,
I’ve got an aspire 5920 302G16 in Thailand here. Bought it here. This model doesn’t have the wireless N got only (B/G) and the HD DVD Rom though. Price is at about close to $1300 when convert from the baht.

First off, i’m running on pure XP; the company preinstalled it for me when i bought it. Yes, they’ve got the drivers, but i think it’s not 100% official, because it’s not in the authorised page. However, i’ve been using it and it’s been working fine. Although, the acer application such as Epower management etc. WILL NOT WORK on the XP.

No objection with most of the problems. I also have the problem with the rubber foot hitting my left click, but i’ll have to stand it. My computer teacher mentions that there are accessory rubber feet available to be bought and stuck additionally, but i’ve not found a shop selling it here yet. The sticky key also happens to my ‘S’ key, but a tiny tap brings it springing back up. howeber, the sticking key will occur only when i’m playing the game Counter Strike (when i press to move back for a long time).
I haven’t updated the BIOS yet, but the laptop runs at a warm temperature. I cant say that it’s cool, because i’ve seen many laptops of other brands run at a bit cooler level, but i must say that it stays like that the whole time. The hardrive part will heat up slightly when i run a complete defragmentation using O&O defrag professional. I don’t play many intensive games (only play Warcraft 3 and Counter Strike 1.6/Source). Temperatures and framerates are constant throughout the gaming session ( counter strike source sees very occasional .1second lags with graphics settings at high and employing 19 bots. I’m taking 3D modelling and animations class at school, and the use of blender is of no load to this gadget at all, even when i’ve got music, MSN, and a counter strike running at the same time. A real multitasking champ.
I’m very proud to have an aspire with the Dolby Virtual Surround Sound audio, and the audio driver will detect when i plug in a headphone jack. A window will pop up with settings for headphones and audio.
That’s about all i have to comment on my lovely 5920 at the moment (it’s only barely 3weeks old for me). I’d really like to thank my parents for getting me this laptop (i’m aged 15, my high school requires all ninth graders and above to have a laptop). I love it very much.

However, It’s great to see ACER treating its UK customers with the disdain us Brits have come to expect from large corporations by selling the UK versions of their 5920 laptops with reduced specifications as opposed to the high spec versions that are available to US customers, who pay a lower price too.
Pity really because I quite like the 5920 US version (AS5920-6582), which isn’t available in the UK.
Here’s what Im talking about…
AS5920-6582 LX.AKS0U.005
Genuine Windows Vista® Ultimate; Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T7700 (4MB L2 Cache, 2.40GHz, 800MHz FSB); 2GB (1/1) DDR2 667 SDRAM; 250GB hard drive; integrated HD DVD-ROM drive (CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RAM); 5-in-1 card reader; 15.4″ WXGA (1280 x 800) TFT display, Acer® CrystalBrite Technology; NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT graphics; 802.11a/g/n WLAN, Bluetooth®, gigabit LAN, V.92 modem, integrated webcam; fingerprint reader; three-year limited warranty; CD with Genuine Windows® XP Professional (Windows® XP Professional can be installed in place of, not in addition to, Windows® Vista Business)
See “http://tinyurl.com/398j2w” for the US versions of the 5920.

It will be very kind of you to mail me that guide.
regards
Bill

I’ve owned an acer 5920 for about a month now and am officially fed up with vista.
@Michael – If you could email me the step-by-step guide to installing XP I’d appreciate it
btw, has anyone tried to install ubuntu? I tried recently to install the new beta coming out soon, but after the boot loader screen it went blank

OK. I’m going to cave in to the mounting pressure…
I’ll format that document Simone put together and will send it off to you, Bill and Lokat and anyone else who wants it.
It will, remember, be the same thing I posted here and here only it’ll look nicer.

I need help. I bought my acer aspire 4920 a few months ago and it doesn’t work anymore!
I turn it on, it goes to the acer screen then it moves to the windows boot and then after that instead of the windows sign and log-in place it come up with a black screen and it just doesn’t change even after a few hours.
Plz someone help. Either send me an email at Princeim786@hotmail.co.uk or post something here. Plz keep it simple.
Thanks

do you get any sound of the windows boot up? sounds like either you have windows curruption or driver problem, what was your last action made it so?

Hi guys,
I have just bought an acer 5920-6990 in Brazil, it comes with Linux from factory but I installed XP without big problems. Even a CD with drivers for XP and Vista came with the product. Thing is, though, it does have bluetooth, it comes with the driver for it, Broadcomm version 5.1.0.3300, it shows the device in the devices management, “Bluetooth Bus Enumerator”, says the device is working properly, but I can’t get it to work. There is a button on the left panel of my keyboard for the bluetooth, but when I press it nothing happens, and on the screen I get the message, “no device”, so I’m wondering either there is some other way to get the hardware and the software to integrate or is this some factory issue? I’m trying to get it to work with my Sony Ericsson K790 cell phone, I assume I can file transfer using bluetooth with it, can’t it?
I’d be really thankful if someone could enlighten me in this matter =)
Morris Lee wrote, on May 9th, 2008:
I believe there is another driver you have to install, it appears to be named as BTW, a folder under DRV so you should be able to find it if you have eRecovery installed “C:\DRV\BTW” install that, it should recognise the bluetooth devices on the laptop.

I have the Aspire 5920 and I love it. I was also looking for the biggest bang for the buck; however, I needed it to work very well. I play World of Warcraft. The only problem that I am having (besides vista being on it) is that the current screen will automatically shut down. For some reason, the pointer will change to look like and arrow pointing up and down. If I press a mouse key then the whole screen will shut down and I will have the main screen (as if I pushed the Windows key). Is anybody else having this problem? Is there any way that I can fix this? It mostly happens when I’m playing WOW but it happens in other programs as well. Please Help!
Morris Lee wrote, on May 26th, 2008:
Sara, sounds to me that it is very much like a driver issue or WOW’s issue. Arrow pointing up and down like the one that when you can resize the window? if thats so, means that somehow the mouse is at a location that it thinks it can resize the window, probably a certain window pops up like your firewall notificatio, AND, your mouse is at that location at the same time, since it is “above” a different window to wow’s window, when you click your mouse, you are being switched to the specific window. few questions I would require you to answer are: is your taskbar unlocked(means you can drag the taskbar to thicker or thinner), are you running any other anti virus other then pre-installed norton? any other software is “On top of windows”? (such as the task manager or msn messenger’s option)

Hey Tom, I never actually read this review thoroughly, I just like to tell you that the “mysterious card to the right of the CPU” you mentioned IS the 8600m GT card, you can find my upgrade procedure here:

install launch manager for your laptop model from acer driver site. when installed, reboot, and then press the bluetooth button, it should respond.

Hi,I have the Acer Aspire 4920 and would just like to know if you know how I can send pictures from my phone to the laptop as I hve lost my cable…. Please reply asap…
Thanks Leann xx
Michael Walsh wrote, on April 28th, 2009:
@Leann do your 4920 and phone have Bluetooth? If so, make sure both Bluetooth connection options are turned on and “pair” them. You might want to look at your phone’s manual on how to do this.
Once they’re paired, there should be the possibility to “send image” from your phone “via Bluetooth” which will automatically send it to your notebook.
Also, if you have your phone’s software installed on the notebook (Motorola and Nokia have custom software) you might be able to do it through this (again via Bluetooth).
Failing that and without the cable I can’t think of another way of sharing photos that doesn’t involve the Internet, social networks and a lot of frustration.
Morris Lee wrote, on April 30th, 2009:
@Leann,
Yes, bluetooth method will work if both the laptop and the phone are equipped with bluetooth.
if not, typical phones uses mini usb cables, you can find them in almost all computer stores

hi everyone.
well i have an acer aspire laptop. i’ve had it for a little over a year. just last week, i was playing resturant city on facebook, and the screen froze. I left it stuck frozen for about 5 mins because i thought maybe there were too many apps trying to run at the same time or if the game was using a lot of mem or if the stupid avg scanner was hogging the ram. anyways. after the reboot i got a message saying that startup couldn’t load maybe it was cuz one of the hardware or software settings had changed when nothing got changed. so it had start windows normal or launch the recovery. i did normal first but that stayed stuck on a blank black screen. so i restarted and picked launch recovery…nothing seemed to work. i ordered the recovery disk from acer and got it today. that didn’t seem to work either. the farthest i got was the first install which got stuck on a blue screen almost made it to the desktop but a cmd file was open for system32. and it stayed there it wouldn’t go away…so i had restarted..now it’s jsut doing the same thing….blank black screen when i use the recovery disk…an acer screen that says “please wait a few moments” that neveer goes away when i use alt f10 instead of the recovery disks…:( my warrenty already expired. i don’t know how to get around this..and what other options i ahve…can anyone out there help me? took me 3 hours to figure out how to get to the harddrive luckily this site saved me another 3 more hours….*sighs* it’s bad enough i lost my work schedule b/c of this…but it’s a good thing i don’t delete the emails from work…but still i had lost a lot of files…helpppppppppp!

Morris Lee wrote, on September 23rd, 2009:
@stephanie,
First, download a linux live disk, such as ubuntu, see if you can boot from it and backup some of your files.
I believe your problem maybe harddrive failure, since eRecovery is unable to complete, as it should recover very quickly.
The harddrive is easy to replace, you can get one from local computer store(apart from big places like futureshop or best buy)

Hi, I have the UK 5920g, and you know those flimsy rails on the dvd tray? Well, I managed to snap them clean in two in an accidentally-opening-the-drive-when-putting-it-under-the-sofa debacle. My question is, what can I replace it with? The current model is the toshiba TS-L802A and I can’t find a direct replacement in the UK unless I get a used one from ebay.
I’m a novice, so sorry if this is a daft question!

there is a issue with hard drive failures in these acers regardless of model. These chassis’s are poorly designed; there is not enough support over the palm rest pad to protect the Hard disk either during execessive typing or even inadvertantly puttting light pressures on the laptop when closed. Ulitmately putting too much pressue on the palm rest pad will concave the from the top of the palmrest of the bottom of the laptop when carrying it folded!
IN addition the whole weak design of the chassis is also causing failures on the video card, intermittantly.
be forewarned and install a metal above or around the hard disk! This is for power-users. others may have professional service.

IN addition the whole weak design of the chassis is also causing failures on the video card, intermittantly. Good system but a very very poorly designed chassis in order to save weight by the OEM!

FYI OEM: there should be more space in and around the internal chassis for flexing of the plastic. Or create one particular model for an absolute power user who could careless for weight. Me personally i dont mind carrying a 12 pound notebook and a 10-12 pound docking station that matches the symmetry of the notebook @ hand.
subtle guru wrote, on November 22nd, 2009:
the entire chassis needs to be replaced so ber very careful when handling this because after extended use the plastic chassis starts heating extensively if not around a cool environoment. Even typing @ 40 wpm could pop a keyboard off the flipping paper-like keyboard! Now imagine typing over 100 wpm!
So be careful the laptop chassis and handle with care.
2 known hardware items that are most to fail before software failure: hard drive and video card. There is not enough ventilation for people who these laptop for extended and extremely excessive periods, like most powers who would.
i have upgraded mine 5920G to a T9300 socket P chip with 512mb NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT video card with 256 SSD hard drive and matching 800 fsb memory. And custom-made bottom chassis cover. Needed more ventilation and cooling power.
subtle guru wrote, on November 22nd, 2009:
actually its T9800(2.93) intel core 2 duo socket p chip with a (256GB SSD) drive. And now this machine smokes most desktop’s upon loading, rendering, compiling with multi-monitor support! However, i am using XP 64-bit. i use xp until the next of microsoft o/s release.
i still use win98, win NT and win2k on other models. Something is wrong with their coding on vista and now win7-too much overhead. Nead about 16gb of ram to operate these 2 respective o/s’s for most power user’s, developers, serious gamers. Even surfing the web, going to myspace on vista drags the machine down.
Morris Lee wrote, on November 22nd, 2009:
@subtle guru,
So, how did you upgrade to 9600m GT on the 5920G? isn’t the BIOS not supporting the card? did you have a work around for the problem? is it possible to upgrade to 250 or 260? I have upgraded to HD3650 from ATi.
