I found an interesting article about the Samsung displays Acer has ordered to use in the Gemstone Blue Full High Definition models on the Display News 4 U site.
The article says that Samsung is “the only panel maker capable of producing 16-inch FHD panels, with other panel makers likely to begin deliveries in the third quarter of 2008. As Acer has already set the launch schedule of its Aspire Gemstone Blue series for April, Samsung is said to have brought forward its shipments schedule. Acer aims to ship a total of 200,000 Aspire FHD notebooks worldwide in the second quarter“.
200,000 Gemstone Blues is a lot of machines, particularly as they are high-end products.
I wonder who will be the first to post a review up here.

There’s a new video up about the Gemstone Blue.
It’s not a product review (I’m trying to get my hands on one) but shows some of the highlights of the various presentations of Gianfranco Lanci, Jim Wong and Gianpiero Morbello and is a clear demonstration that Acer have well and truly raised the style bar.
Game on!

No, wait… I just dug this up (good job I work in marketing). No that isn’t me speaking and no I didn’t write the copy.
But it’s an official Acer video so it’s pretty slick.

Found another great video on the Gemstone Blue (wasn’t difficult). This one features Mark Spoonauer, Editor in Chief of Laptop Magazine and describes the media console functionality. Their thoughts on the Gemstone Blue can also be found here.

It’s been really interesting keeping track of the Gemstone Blue this week (well from Wednesday).
The lastest sites to publish articles are Cnet’s Crave and of course, Engaget.
Crave has never minced its words (remember their reaction to the original Gemstone…? Phew!!)
Still this time round the Blue seems to have made a slightly more positive impression:
Acer advanced its plans for world domination with the announcement of two multimedia-oriented laptops in the brand-new Gemstone Blue series. Aside from their crazy unique media control console, the laptops’ key advancement is their 16- and 18-inch displays, which should be better for viewing HD content.
Love that “crazy unique”.
Their main article on the Gemstone Blue is here.
Engadget has possibly the best slide show of the launch event and I strongly recommend you check it out, if only to see what you missed
Again, Engadget’s main article is here.

I’ve been waiting all day for someone to put up a video from the launch and finally Slashgear came up with the goods.
They’ve also published possibly the best write up so far of the Gemstone Blue launch (by that I mean not just relaying garbled specs but some genuine opinions and decent unofficial photos.
Great title too. ![]()

So the wait is finally over.
Blue has landed.
No word yet back from the guys out in New York (they’re probably shattered) but I’ll post some more info the moment I hear from them.
The New York launch was way too late for me (kids!) so I set up my Google alerts and was welcomed with a flurry of sites reporting on the new arrival when my youngest woke me up at 5am (what’s a guy to do?).
Rather than re-writing what other sites think, I’d like to compliment the guys from Circle Line who helped organized the shindig despite the fact that New York is 4000 miles away from home.
Another thing that was great during the lead up to the Blue was the mails I received asking me what the hell Blue was. And not only from people outside of Acer.
My Facebook mail has been brimming with requests since the teasers went up across all the Acer sites and it was fascinating to see the predictions. Not to steal the show from what is an extraordinary product, many were expecting a down-sized ultra portable or smartphone model after the recent acquisition of E-TEN (see article below).
You’re going to have to wait a little while longer for that…
But back to the Gemstone Blue. Just in case you haven’t figured it out yet, it’s the first notebook with a true 16:9 ratio high-definition screen. What that mans is that it looks just like your widescreen TV at home and is pretty darned amazing to watch movies on. And that should also give you a pretty strong clue as to the raison d’ĂȘtre for this machine: Cinema.
I’ll write more on this a little later on and will try and post a bunch of photos up on my Flickr site but for now, check out the minisite.
