Do it yourself videos: Gemstone Blue – third time lucky

This time round I answer four questions:
1. What’s the Windows Experience Index?
2. What does a (real) DVD look like on the 8920?
3. What is the keyboard like?
4. How loud can it go?
Unfortunately I couldn’t get my hands on a VoIP Bluetooth phone or a 6920 but I’m still looking for them so this ain’t over just yet.
If you have any more questions I’m happy to go in there again and try and answer them. Just don’t make them too technical as a) these are sample models which means they are not full production spec and b) I’d rather YOU publish your own reviews once you’ve bought one…
Anyway, without further ado… here is the latest installment of the Gemstone Blue.

Michael, for god. When will this fantastic piece of hardware will hit stores? I’m from Brazil. I’m coming here almost every day just to see any news about those notebooks. There is not a lot of news going on the net about them or information about a real release date. I need this info, and if you somehow can make a video on a 6920 I would be a little bit satisfied. Also, those notebooks will sell with Penrym Core2Duo? Starting at the T8100? Thanks a lot, and keep the great work.

oh, 4.7 only?? i was hoping the sample should be more powerful…. to show off you know… but yeah, my aspire 5920 index is at 4.6 now, i don’t see why getting that one if you just want a heavier weight and the cool led touchpad. I wa expecting it to be loaded with something kicks ass… core 2 quad… too bad..

The experience index, rarely is accurate. My vista experience index fell from 4.7 to 4.6 when I installed newer graphics card drivers that improved performance in my 5920.
This laptop looks nice. I would sacrifice a little screen real estate for no black bars when watching a movie in normal light.

Jing, what I am assuming is that after a few programs are also installed when you did your second index check, since the more process you are running in the background the slower the windows get, windows slows down after a long period of use gradually. My aspire 5920 cpu was at 4.7 if I have a clean install of windows with the newest driver, now it has fall to 4.5. A T7300 cpu can get maybe about 5.4 already, so there is a possibility that they are still using the t5XXX series for the new models as well.

I have a t7300 cpu and it’s top rating has only ever been 4.9.
I can install any number of programs etc and rescan to get the same index score of 4.7. After installing new graphics drivers, the “desktop performance for windows aero” always falls. Whilst the “gaming graphics” increasefrom 5.1 to about 5.3.
I’m sure the 6920 is faster and more powerful, the same way the 5920(15.4″) was more powerful that the 7920(17″).
The sacrifice is between more screen and slower components, or smaller notebook and faster componenents

probably yeah, but I still wich they’d make something alote more powerful, maybe a 8800m gtx or 9600m, the 9500m or whichever I recently seen equipted on the 8920 has the exact same core speed shader etc with the 8600m gt….

I just received my 8920. I’m not a technical guy, just an average joe, I just wanted it for movies and games on the move.
Its sweet. Very sweet, the screen is yummy, hi def is better than I thought it could be on such a small screen. The touch sensitive control is great, its like being a starship captain or something, “I need more volume!!!”
The overall build quality looks great, the case is VERY sexy. Scren takes some getting used to. Its like a limosine, not really taller than your average car but loooonger.
Umm can’t think of much else to write just now, suffice to say its sweet and I love it.

forgot to put this in, how does it sound? for the “tube speaker” thing, I read somewhere that the hinge tube is where the speakers are amplifying and sounds muffled or something
Duncan Walker wrote, on April 23rd, 2008:
Hi Morris
I’m going to be honest and say the sound isn’t the best, some of it is a little tinny, and voices can get washed out, which is annoying for watching movies. I haven’t tried with headphones yet, so I will try that this afternoon and let you all know.
I will also load up a couple of games, crank up the eye candy settings and see how it handles that and let you know.
Cheers

what video card does your model come with? how does the sound compare to the 5920G?? I know for most of the DVDrip movies I have have really low volume, musics plays just fine, musics can play very loud. whats the sound card that it equipted with? if it is realtek HD audio, try changing the equalizer to “Powerful” this made my speakers sounds alot more like desktop level.

One last question Duncan, I was wondering if I can get the installer of Acer Arcade program, since the one on aspire 5920 looks lame, the animation does not run very smoothly, from the videos I’ve seen, the new Arcade program looks sleek, if you can get me a copy of that version of Arcade that would be great!
to get the installer should be under C:\Acer\Arcade something like this, if the acer folder is not there, open eRecovery-> Restore button on the bottom -> Reinstall applications/drivers(this may take a while, but it should create the folder and include all the drivers and softwares for 8920 in the Acer folder

Does the keyboard on 6920 glows blue or not? ‘Cause on some pictures it glows and on some it doesn’t.
Thanks in advance
