Quick post this one.
Over on TheAcerGuy YouTube page, several people have written comments asking how good the Gemstone Blue notebooks are for gaming.
For example, panzeram wrote this:
…is this thing any good for gaming, the one available in my area has an Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT 512MB, but will the huge resolution cause any problems?
I refuse to answer these questions as I’ve never seen a game on either the 6920 or 8920, so who am I to say??
But I know that some of you have, so I’m asking you: How good is the Gemstone Blue for games?
I’m looking around for user reviews/discussions and so far have come up with these:
Acer Aspire 8920G 18.4-inch Display Notebook–Hot Times in Brooklyn – The Acer Aspire 8920G was recently introduced at a local discount store. A salesman at the store knows what a fanatic I am for innovation. We are on a first name basis and when it came in, he called me.
Need help on buying Blu-ray Laptop – I am looking forward to buy my first Laptop and have researched alot but I am confused whether Acer Gemstone 8920, Sony Vaio AR or Dell XPS M1730… what would be the right choice for me…. :- Mostly I would use it for Complete Home …
Acer Aspire 8920G (AS8920-6671) Review – Acer’s new Gemstone Blue line—more specifically, the Aspire 8920G—breaks the mold in more ways than one. Its 16:9, 18.4-inch screen offers true 1080p widescreen resolution; it’s the first notebook to break the True 5.1 Dolby sound …
Acer Aspire 8920-6671 – With Blu-ray and a true 1080p display, the 18-inch Acer Aspire 8920 is a…

hi guys,
hv got the acer 8920g with 2.5ghz, and 9500gs 512mb gfx card,
1). crysis does not work on this laptop, tried the demo b4 getting the full game and it only works on lowest quality gfx.
2). try http://www.systemrequirementslab.com, it says quake 4 will run on full gfx, & it does run on ultra quality setting but on 1024×768 mode, not on 1600×1200.
3). have not tried other games but the site does claim that bioshock, world in conflict, supreme commander will run on full setting..
will keep u updated…

try, 174.16 from here http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=17609 vista 32 bit, make sure you use the modded inf from the site as well. even though this is not the newest driver, but I recall this one has alot more options for resolutions. I play crysis on high-very high on 720×480 low resolution, but I prefer effects > resolution.

forgot to mention, my card is also overclocked, so you are looking at a lower performence, mayb medium settings, 9500gs = 8600m gt , but my 8600m gt is overclocked to 575/1150/470 Mhz (core/shader/mem) rather then factory 475/950/390 mhz

hi
all playing counter strike on 6920 2.4 processor
in wide screen maxed out settings its running 166.6 frame per second on the video stress test so not too bad
cod 4 works on mdeium settings but i mainly play that on mx 360
i admit cs is an older game but its still one of the most enjoyable “realistic” online fragfests
Morris Lee wrote, on June 8th, 2008:
True that, cheers mate! even though, COD 4 was an ok game, Source somehow is so much more immersive then the other online game i have ever experienced.

BAD NEWS!!!
I own Aspire 8920-6829 1.83 C2D, GeForce 9500gs for more than a month and I’m having problems with games.I played Call of Duty 4, DIRT Colin McRae, Pro Evolution Soccer and during the gaming the display driver hangs, and the game freezes for 1 minute. I’m getting mad more and more every time this happens.
Anyone has the same/similar situation please review.

have you ever tried laptopvideo2go.com, that is if you are using the factory driver and causing the problem
deano wrote, on June 15th, 2008:
Hey i tried the 174.16 drivers recomended by morris and they work great for games. But i cant watch blu rays anymore they say the drivers are not supported. This was using the acer arcade deluxe program. Any ideas?
Morris Lee wrote, on June 16th, 2008:
blu-ray and hd dvd requires hardware support, one way to bypass this is to use Nero showtime, requires purchase, and the scale down to a lower resolution montor looks pixelated. since the hardware support requires the driver to specify wether if this card supports blu-ray and stuff, the laptop video 2 go one is modded from factory driver to be able to install on 3rd party manufactures, I believe those functions are still to be enabled by laptop video 2 go developers.

I buy an acer 8920g 2 weeks ago and like ndgaho i got a lot of troubles playing with.
I tried world in conflict, hitman blood money, crysis, COD4 and everytime i start playing the game run well during 10 minutes and then i got violent freezes followed sometimes by BSOD , memory errors or drivers errors, i tried several drivers such as laptopvideo2go.com ones but nothing changes.
I think this is a hardware problem, i am probably gonna send it back to acer and see if they can fix it …
Morris Lee wrote, on September 12th, 2008:
which video card is yours equipted with? 9500m gs? if so, the 9500m gs the older 8600m gt(they are exactly the same) both have thermal issues. you can try different bios from acer, but not recommnaded, you can also use the rivatuner workaround, I will write small instruction if you want.
Kanjah wrote, on September 25th, 2008:
Hi Morris , and thanks for your reply.
I am equipped with a brand new 9500m GS. I don’t think this is a thermal problem, cause sometimes freezes happened juste 5 minutes after power on, sometimes 40 minutes …
I tried many many things to fix it, i tried plenty of drivers, formating several times, downclock my GPU, tested my RAM and HDD, spy temperatures of GPU, CPU, spy actives processus and so on, but nothing changes.
I am desesperate and the more i try to fix it, the more i think it’s a hardware problem, so for now i am keeping the pc because i need it but asap i send it to acer support
Tyrone Ludick wrote, on February 6th, 2009:
Guys
I had same problem with my GPU (9500GS). It froze and then flashed violently and displayed a message that my Display adapter has recovered from an error.
Well guess what?? I solved my problem. Nvidia has released notebook drivers. Search for the appropiate GPU that matches your GPU and download and install.
Since then, never had problems and my games run even better now.
Kanjah wrote, on February 10th, 2009:
Thanks for ur tip Tyrone, i saw notebooks drivers on nvidia.com , i’ll try them asap i get hope, hope it works !

@Kanjah,
I hope you get “hope” soon! lol, I know you meant to say “home”

my acer aspire 5920 keeps freezing up on me in normal mode but runs fine in safe mode and i cant figure out why it has windows vista home premium 32 bit can you tell me how to fix it
Morris Lee wrote, on March 30th, 2009:
@jeremy,
try uninstalling the graphics driver. reboot, keep the laptop up with the driver uninstalled see if it still freezes.
if that still does not work, see if you got SP1 installed yet.
if SP1 is installed, then you should try a factory default by pressing Alt+F10 on startup, it will lead to eRecovery manager.
