Acer Aspire One - what about messenger, skype and email?

You want to chat? Can’t think of an easier (and smaller) way of doing it than with the Aspire One.
This is me taking you through the various elements of the interface and setting up a Messenger account and Skype account.
Phew!

I wanted to know where to find Skype for the Acer Aspire One. I have the computer, but it does not have Skype pre-installed on it. I see from this video that it is made for Linux Lite. Where do I find a copy of that. I’ve looked all over the internet. Skype has downloadable copies for linux, but none of them seem to be for Linux Lite.
Can anyone help me find a copy. I live in Indonesia and would like to use the Aspire One and Skype to contact family in the States.
Thank you,
David Jameson

I don’t think there is a difference between Linux and Linux lite, they should both use the same kernal and able to use the same GUI, try this http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/

andrew,
I tried the Fedora version (7, I think) and it worked for me. Tested it out by having a vid skype conversation with myself on another computer, and it seems to be working fine.

Yeah, I live in Indonesia too, and here, they only Aspire One without the hard disk, and only preloaded with Linux. Will Linux restrict the software choices for the computer? Will Windows Live Messenger work on this computer?

Michael Walsh (Check me out!) said …
@Rosie, @jari
I’ve asked Acer support about this and it turns out there is a problem (I’ve written a new post about this).
In essence, “Microsoft changed the protocol to login on to their servers and our application needs to be updated
it should be ready within the next three days. Updates will be available from the Live Update service.”
So this, then, is the first real test of Acer’s Live Update service…

I just got my Aspire One. I cannot get Skype to install or MSN messenger to connect. Adding insult to injury, the live update function does not even run after finding a server.

Got the acer a week ago, here in Canada. Did an ‘update’ right away - which worked flawlessly. Lots of files were uploaded. My wife took the Acer with her this week on a trip to Europe. We have little problem chatting with her using the Acer’s messenger, and me using MSN messenger. We can type in the chat box, and see each other via webcam (Acer’s webcam looks VERY good), however, the button for PC to PC call, on the Acer’s messenger, is “gray’ed” out so we can’t seem to do a voice/voice call. I’ll have to look at it when she gets back.

@ Michael Walsh: how come your brand new aspire one already has skype installed? Mine (purchased last week in Canada) didn’t come with skype. Has acer changed the software that ships with the computer? Seems like other users above have the same problem.
2nd question: can the included chat program (which I do have) be configured to work with a skype account, thereby avoiding the need to install skype?

Michael Walsh (Check me out!) said …
@bunmaster2000 that brand new Aspire One in those videos was a pre-production prototype. I mentioned it a couple of times and the fact that Skype isn’t installed on the commercially available models is not news. I even wrote about it here. As I mentioned in that post, it’s a question of cost. Skype is free for end-users but costs manufacturers money if they want to include it in the pre-installed software package, which in turn either a) bumps up the cost of the machine or b) lowers the already low profit margins.
And for the record, the Aspire One that I bought does not have Skype (yet).
As for your second question, as far as I know, Skype can only be accessed through its own client, which means you’re going to have to install it yourself, instructions for which you’ll find here.
A couple of pointers:
1. Make sure you download version 2.0.0.72 for Fedora 7
2. Make sure you start the installation while connected to the internet as you’ll need to download an additional three software packages to complete the installation.
3. You’ll be asked to add the digital key during the installation. Accept.
4. You’ll be reminded that the software could be dangerous. Ignore and finish the installation.
In any case, I’m going to be making a couple of walk-through videos on application installations over the next few weeks (still got one more week of holidays to finish…). Skype will be one of them.

Thanks, I followed the directions on your other page and it worked perfectly…skype is now installed. FYI, this page comes up before your instruction page on a google search of “aspire one skype”. I’ll reinforce the message: for excellent instructions on how to get skype on your aspire one, look here:

Skype worked perfectly, for which many thanks, now trying to install RAWTHERAPEE 2.3. I have no experience of Linux, but I have dowloaded a version, and can make it run by clicking on the execute file via file manager, but how can I actually install it within the system??

Kari (Check me out!) said …
RAWTHERAPEE what i noticed seems to be only in ubuntu or windows and then the source files which you would need to build yourself, which really can be a pain in the ass.. Sorry about swearing.
Check out instructions how to compile a program and then also you need to download the compilers. To get that working.

ryan,
click settings and click live update, give that a shot, reboot if necessary. I notice that my update no longer works, even if I use factory default, I expected that the server is down for the moment(or maybe just my area)
then again, there is always a second option, use pidgin instead, only that it does not support webcam and voice call.

Did anyone have any trouble getting their Aspire One to connect to the internet? I have a broadband service and my PC has no trouble, but I plug the ethernet cord into my Aspire, and it can’t find a network. What’s up with that?
Any help would be TOTALLY appreciated.

Hi Guys,
I just bought my girlfriend an Acer Aspire One yesterday… everything seems to working as it should be except for the microphone. I tried to record a video through the bundled software… it captured the video but it did not record sound. I read somewhere that this a known issue with this system (they recommended some troubleshooting steps)… is this really a known defect or should we run back to the store so they can replace it?
If this is an issue that can be fixed… I hope you guys can post the ULR of the site that contains the instuctions on how to fix this issue.
Thanks in advance.

Erick, aww how nice of you, but anyways, no worries, it is a software issue from Acer I am pretty sure, i was not able to record video with sound, I can’t be sure if it is fixed now as I moved back to XP(I just like the equilizer for realtek sound card in windows) try updating the machine, and see if it works

sounds like the downloaded file is currupted, so there is “nothing” to install, try deleting it and download it again.
