OK… Here we go. The first user review of an Acer Aspire 6920 (Gemstone Blue).
I’ve been waiting for what seems like a gazillion years for someone to write what these things are like in the real world (as opposed to journalists’ test benches) and Ian came up with the goods.
Here’s what he thinks:
————————————–
Hi Michael,
Just to let you know I got my laptop yesterday, I need to get used to it a bit before doing a video.
I can tell you that all the Games I have work very well on it.
World of Warcraft running at an amazing 50-60 Frames Per Second with all the graphics setting turned to Max and the colour depth set to 24 – 24 – *1 Multisampling if this is set to max ie *8 Multisampling the FPS drops to 20-30.
I could not see any real difference other than at *8 then the colours being more richer.
The effects of spell casting is awesome as is the sound.
Realflight G3 (RC Flight Sim) is also Awesome. All settings turn to max and running very very well.
Railsim set to default, runs very nice. If the settings are turned to max, frame rate drops and makes for a jerky but buy nomeans bad ride, This game does require a very powerful P.C anyway to run perfect ie twin SLI Nvidia with Agia Hardware not Software.
But, I am amazed that the Gemstone could run RailSim at all on default. Just goes to show you don’t have to have an £2000.00 P.C to enjoy it, If you like Rail Simulators that is.
The 16inch screen is very very clear, Made by Samsung so I’ve be told..
I have to give Acer a big thumbs up for this Beauty of an Laptop but thumbs down for not including an Orignal Windows Vista Premium DVD-R conciding how much I had to pay for it £800.00 here in Plymouth, UK.
HDMI output to my 32″ Samsung at 1080i was ace to start off with but some how the screen size as shrunk, how i don’t know, so I need some help on that one. It happen when I was playing with the Nvidia setup.
Keyboard is great to use, Ive seen the clip on YouTube where the guy/gal is pressing (in my mind) too hard making the key flex really badly – if this is how he uses a laptop he can stay away from mine…
Internet connect speed as increased by *10 over my older Fujitsu getting around the 350kbps now.
The user interface is cool too, I wish I had more money to spend on getting the 5.1 sound version of this but have to settle with just the 2.1 with Bluray.
Talking of Bluray The demo BD that came with this machine was OK but most of the footage had a lot of video noise which made for Crap play back, The only good clip was Casino Royale.
Acer should look at changing the included BD-R for something better, maybe wildlife clips from The Living Earth series. Of course that will cost them money which may increase the price.
Back to the sound side, The TUBE bass has gone…. Again me playing with setting and lost it…Any points in how to get it back…?
The Touch pad is cool. I have no problems in using it and the thumb reader is a cool security option which I am using.
SPDIF, Ive been everwhere in Plymouth to get one to connect to my Sony Amp and nobody can help me all they can give me is a standard PS3/XBOX optic.
The instructions are crap for this socket. It does not tell you anything, ie. Is it Optic or Not. I would love to get my hand on a free cable again would have been nice to have it included in the box.
OK enough of me. Hope this little text is of an use.
Spec = 2.1Ghz model.
Marks out of 10……. 8.
I would like to have Window Vista on Disc and a SPDIF Lead included in the price, that is the only thing from me giving it 10 out of 10.
Cheers Ian.

I had that fantastic laptop, only to put it in my poor excuse of a laptop bag and have it fall on the pavement (to my absolute horror, outside C103 in Union Street, of all places….) and insurance decided to give me the upgraded 6935G which I can only say, is quite a significant improvement over the 6920 =D
Both laptops are absolutely brilliant value for money, however, my tuba bass has also cut out =/
As for the nVidia panel on the widescreen, have you tried re-setting it to defaults? That worked for me when I somehow managed to get half the screen appearing in the top left hand corner of my TV….

Hi Michael,
My 6920 is still going strong.
Anybody that as this beast with Nvidia Graphics card, It’s worth downloading the new drivers from Nvidia with the CUDA drivers not the one on the Acer site which as never be updated past the first update.
Makes the graphics move even faster than ever.
Cheers Ian. Now saving for a Predator System.

@Alexander
The rule (usually) is: if you can’t turn it on, it has to go back.
If you bought it just a few days ago, then take it straight back to where you bought it and get a replacement.
I believe that if it’s going to go wrong, it’ll do so almost immediately, so take it back, OK?
