Acer Aspire One – what about messenger, skype and email?

You want to chat? Can’t think of an easier (and smaller) way of doing it than with the Aspire One.
This is me taking you through the various elements of the interface and setting up a Messenger account and Skype account.
Phew!

I wanted to know where to find Skype for the Acer Aspire One. I have the computer, but it does not have Skype pre-installed on it. I see from this video that it is made for Linux Lite. Where do I find a copy of that. I’ve looked all over the internet. Skype has downloadable copies for linux, but none of them seem to be for Linux Lite.
Can anyone help me find a copy. I live in Indonesia and would like to use the Aspire One and Skype to contact family in the States.
Thank you,
David Jameson

I don’t think there is a difference between Linux and Linux lite, they should both use the same kernal and able to use the same GUI, try this http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/

Michael Walsh wrote, on August 6th, 2008:
@Rosie, @jari
I’ve asked Acer support about this and it turns out there is a problem (I’ve written a new post about this).
In essence, “Microsoft changed the protocol to login on to their servers and our application needs to be updated
it should be ready within the next three days. Updates will be available from the Live Update service.”
So this, then, is the first real test of Acer’s Live Update service…

Got the acer a week ago, here in Canada. Did an ‘update’ right away – which worked flawlessly. Lots of files were uploaded. My wife took the Acer with her this week on a trip to Europe. We have little problem chatting with her using the Acer’s messenger, and me using MSN messenger. We can type in the chat box, and see each other via webcam (Acer’s webcam looks VERY good), however, the button for PC to PC call, on the Acer’s messenger, is “gray’ed” out so we can’t seem to do a voice/voice call. I’ll have to look at it when she gets back.
bunmaster2000 wrote, on August 19th, 2008:
@ Michael Walsh: how come your brand new aspire one already has skype installed? Mine (purchased last week in Canada) didn’t come with skype. Has acer changed the software that ships with the computer? Seems like other users above have the same problem.
2nd question: can the included chat program (which I do have) be configured to work with a skype account, thereby avoiding the need to install skype?
Michael Walsh wrote, on August 20th, 2008:
@bunmaster2000 that brand new Aspire One in those videos was a pre-production prototype. I mentioned it a couple of times and the fact that Skype isn’t installed on the commercially available models is not news. I even wrote about it here. As I mentioned in that post, it’s a question of cost. Skype is free for end-users but costs manufacturers money if they want to include it in the pre-installed software package, which in turn either a) bumps up the cost of the machine or b) lowers the already low profit margins.
And for the record, the Aspire One that I bought does not have Skype (yet).
As for your second question, as far as I know, Skype can only be accessed through its own client, which means you’re going to have to install it yourself, instructions for which you’ll find here.
A couple of pointers:
1. Make sure you download version 2.0.0.72 for Fedora 7
2. Make sure you start the installation while connected to the internet as you’ll need to download an additional three software packages to complete the installation.
3. You’ll be asked to add the digital key during the installation. Accept.
4. You’ll be reminded that the software could be dangerous. Ignore and finish the installation.
In any case, I’m going to be making a couple of walk-through videos on application installations over the next few weeks (still got one more week of holidays to finish…). Skype will be one of them.
bunmaster2000 wrote, on August 20th, 2008:

click settings and click live update, give that a shot, reboot if necessary. I notice that my update no longer works, even if I use factory default, I expected that the server is down for the moment(or maybe just my area)

look through the menu, you should be able to find the “default application” something simuliar. and when the window is opened, you should be able to change to thunderbird. as for your desktop icon, you need to go to /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/group-app.xml and find your email icon and change the link to thunderbird
this in theory on how I would do it, but I do not recommand email clients like outlook thunderbird etc.
Haneef wrote, on October 20th, 2008:
@morris
whats wrong with thunderbird? what email client do you suggest?
Morris Lee wrote, on October 20th, 2008:
nothing typically “wrong” about them, but that fact that they store your emails ON your computer. Thus makes your computer very vulnerable to viruses etc.
Another thing is that if you ever had a computer crash and require a format of the entire system, so long, the old emails~~
these email clients requires first time setup, which means you can’t really have easy access to your emails when you are using another computer (such as a library or a school computer) it is not like you can just send and receive emails there.
solution to these barriers I use online based email systems, currently I and a customer of hotmail and gmail. I prefer gmail with the functionality plus email space. the spam filter from gmail is also very efficient.
aside from being better on the above facts, you need to create a new email account for gmail.
Cheers to all~

My wife and I have had standard Yahoo email accounts for about 6 months and I could add both of these to the Aspire email accounts without any problems.
Because the system doesn’t recognise the email account, I can’t set up Yahoo Messenger either.
I have run all the updates but that has not solved the problem.

As far as I know, there is no real fix apart from the Live Update service. And of course with it being Christmas, I’m the only one left standing (I have no-one to ask for confirmation) so I won’t have any real suggestions for you till after the break.
@Lou – not sure why your Live Update hangs. That’s NOT normal. You mentioned you have several updates to carry out. Have you tried them one at a time.
PS For the record, you should all see a number next to the Live Update thingamygig you’re installing. They are chronological and tell Acer support what stage our A1 is at and, should you have to call them for assistance (hopefully we can avoid that) helps them pinpoint your machine and its capabilities.
Just a thought.

The Linux version of the Aspire One has an interface that looks like this:

If you have a Windows XP version then the problem is entirely different. Basically, the Messenger for Linux has had difficulties communicating with the Microsoft Messenger service and fixes are released region by region via the Live Update.
The Windows version of the Aspire One is something else entirely and so are any Messenger-related problems as it’s an all-Microsoft environment…

Hi Joane,
Nothing like technology to ruin a great Christmas eh? This may sound like a daft question but have you repeated the Live Update? I’m only asking because sometimes it downloads only what it wants (can) and leaves some for the next time. You also need to reboot (start it again) each time you do.
For the keyboard, I think I know the problem but don’t have an easy solution. You know when you opened it and selected language and password etc.? Well it sounds like you selected US English which is why the keyboard is different. On mine I selected UK English when the keyboard was Italian (I wanted an English interface) and it was a disaster.
There’s probably a way of smoothly switching the keyboard language over to UK English – unfortunately in my case I had to recover the entire system, which was easier than it sounds, but still a pain. http://www.theacerguy.com/2008/09/aspire-one-recovery/
Hope you get the kids smiling soon.

Hi,
I posted yesterday about the ‘MSN/Hotmail’ protocol problem, and yes you DO have to keep performing the live update to get it to work.
I must have spent most of Boxing Day doing it, but it does work. The update it needs is in the first patch listed (you get info after it does its initial scan) and you can see the update to the IM client.
Mine kept timing out on the Photo Manager patch. I don’t know why, but i noticed that if I didn’t restart the machine after a failed live update, it would realise that it had already downloaded the patches before it and only restart the failed one. It would of course fail again but the progress bar on the final patch would increase every time.
Eventually it downloads everything and tells you it is successful – this is when I rebooted and the Messenger worked straight off.
It’s a long and tedious process – but stick with it for the patch.
Cheers,
dp

I too have an Aspire One 512mb/120gb/1.6MHz running Linpus Linux.
I also had the Messenger ‘protocol’ problem.
I’m also new to Linux, but can now offer some advice.
Updating appears straightforward via ‘Live Update’. Only about one of the 20 or so updates that my machine needed was user selectable, so it was simply a case of ‘download the lot’.
However, this took a while! The updates are not installed until the whole set of files are downloaded to the machine – and this was a hefty set of files.
The main problem for me was that since I only have a wi-fi Internet connection, the length of time online and the amount of information downloaded was causing the wi-fi card to hang (probably overheating?).
The cure was to shut down for a minute or so, reboot and start the update process again. This I had to do five times – the whole process took about an hour and a half!
Once the file was completely downloaded, it installed completely in about 2 minutes and presto!
Messenger and webcam now working.

Everyone here please wait until the server’s load has reduced, due to Christmas, lots of Aspire One were sold, gifted etc, as a result, enormous amount of users trying to update.
For your information, the linpus server is not as big as a Microsoft server or a google’s server, Linpus is a freeware just like most other Linux distributions thus low in budget to get a good live update server with good bandwidth to overcome these events such as Christmas!
I hope everyone had a great Christmas and have a happy new year!

I also have an ASUS Eee PC (cheap and cheerful) which has linux AND a fully working webcam!
I’ve been into two major chain stores this morning (PC World and Currys) and the sales staff were happily telling me that the Webcam on the ACER ASPIRE ONE worked with the linux operating system (which I’m now reliably informed (i.e. by you) is not the case): when I informed them of the problems I’ve been having, and the advice from this site, they said that they would consider issuing a ‘fault notice’ to all their stores (which I think is a big issue and will have significant ramifications for ACER). Anyhow, that’s not my problem: my problem is a bitterly disappointed daughter over Christmas. However, I’m determined to inform other people about the problems so they don’t make the same mistake. From what i have read on this forum it seems that patch 180046 seems to be the patch that solves this problem. After much rooting around i have not been able to find a direct link to the patch required, if anybody can help with this it would be much appreciated. Daughter has found a program called eBuddy that lets you access all your msn contacts it doesn’t have the full functionality but it does the job. So until the updates kick in or someone can help with a link to the patch required this would have to do.

Graeme R wrote, on December 31st, 2008:
Dear All,
We shouldn’t have to sort these problems out ourselves; the product should have been ‘fit for purpose’ when we took it out of the box.
When the sales literature in the shop (or on-line) tells us that the system runs on Linux and that there is a webcam, we can assume that the webcam should work on the Linux platform; however, here are a few facts that I’ve been able to establish from Acer (if you’re running on Linux):
1. You cannot record sound using the webcam (it’s video only – but who would want to record a silent movie?).
2. The webcam does not work with Skype (they tell me I should be able to use the webcam on MS Messenger but I’ve been unable to do so).
3. Don’t bother with the Linux version, go with the Windows O/S! (So why do they market the Linus version anyway?).
My local PC World has now put up a sign saying that the Webcam on ACER Aspire One (linux version) does not work – so at least prospective purchasers are warned now (I think this can be taken as an attempt to rectify a demonstrable misrepresentation). I’ve been offered a full refund, but my daughter’s Christmas has been spoilt.
Acer Guys: you’re help service admirable, though unfortunately in my case is has served to prolong my agony and frustration. I think the best advice you can offer those of us who’ve bought an Aspire One (Linux) is “Take it back to the shop and ask for a refund….. and then start again!”.
Best regards.
Graeme

Hi thanks to all, after reading and repeated trying, the updates finally kicked in and MSN and webcam on it now both working, just takes a lot of patience (all updates have to be downloaded and installed for bug fixes).Would recommend doing the updates one at a time for anyone new to the aspire as the whole (19 I think) package is quite hefty for one download,(just un-check them one at a time).
In response to Graeme R’s comment above, yes maybe Acer could have had a more up to date system coming out of the box but as with all systems, updates are usually required and although it’s been slow, if you persist the updates do work and correct the problems.
In this day and age where value for money is considered a very important factor in any purchase, installing the Linux system on this lovely little machine really has been a good piece of business in my opinion (or do we all want to carry on lining Mr Gates pockets for his operating system) ?
Surely the whole point of this machine is to view the web and keep in touch, this little machine lets you do exactly that.
Happy new year to all.

Michael Walsh wrote, on January 1st, 2009:
Hi Alan,
Many thanks for writing in and letting us know you (finally) got everything going.
Thanks also for sharing your thoughts on both the operating system and Acer’s role in making it a smooth purchase for all of us.
From my point of view (and if it’s still not clear who I am, the role I play in Acer’s communication, why I’m doing this and how it all fits into the Acer world then check out the About page) I agree wholeheartedly with what both you and Graeme R have to say.
I don’t think anyone will be amazed to hear that the Live Update servers were clearly overwhelmed this week and Acer deserves a low score for both for clarity (explaining what users had to do) and provision (delivering on that promise) but having said that, the netbook segment (and “alternative” Operating Systems) is a whole new ballgame and even if the Aspire One has outsold the others, the fact that its rise to popularity has been so fast means that the precedent it’s setting looks and behaves like a very steep learning curve.
No product is ever perfect – think of Enzo Ferrari’s description of his favourite Ferrari – but from a business standpoint, what’s best: getting a product out and fine tuning it or waiting until it’s absolutely, 100%, bomb-proof perfect before launching?
It also seems that a vast percentage of people who came here looking for a solution ended up finding one and – like you – posted to let others know about it so while Acer certainly didn’t do anyone any favours it still offered the means to get everyone up and running, even if it did take an unofficial site like this to get the message out.
So a bumpy start and one not without casualties. I’m truly sorry to hear of people throwing in the towel and returning their products before their problems were sorted and also to hear that the hard work (and long hours!) I and my colleagues put into the Acer brand goes to waste over something as trivial as a server farm.
Oh well, c’est la vie.
A Happy New Year to each and every one of you.

@adds,
I am simply taking what other people has already experienced and sharing it to you, there are so many possible problems with the wifi and I do not know which applies to you, it was the only thing I could suggest.
as for some users are experiencing wireless connection problem to their own router, simply because their router’s configuration was not compatible with aspire one, if you can’t connect to your router and check your settings, only way to test is to test on another WORKING router, in this case, i suggested the library.
if you can appreciate the advises here, don’t comment, I do have theories behind the advise I give.

it may be the wireless issue, try using the cable, use it for couple of times, if the problem no longer exist with the cable, give this a shot http://www.theacerguy.com/2008/08/wireless-problems-with-the-aspire-one/#comment-2964

Any ideas for those of us with MSN Messenger issues? In my case, Messenger works, but we cannot use the Webcam. Everything was fine in Nov 2008.
Thanks.

@Phil, I don’t have linpus installed now, I will install it after the exams are over(in one week) then I will see if I can run into all the problems addressed above
Michael Walsh wrote, on January 21st, 2009:
@Phil
Don’t know if any of these apply to you, but they are from Acer:
- Yahoo messenger supports web cam sharing only. No audio.
- For webcam sharing, A1 Messenger only supports one to one. This is our limitation on the linux platform.
- If your WiFi signal is very weak, you might encounter log in fail at messenger. There is a time-out period. The behavior is the same as window’s Messenger.
Marco Farina wrote, on January 22nd, 2009:
Hello, since a few days I’m having the same problem as Jess: often the message “invalid certificate chain. The certificate presented for contacts.msn.com is not valid” and no connection at all. Sometimes it connects, but it says that it is working in mode compatible with Windows Messanger, with only chat and emoticons enabled (no webcam). Sometimes it connects perfectly, no problem, with everything working (including webcam). If in the option panel one selects “use service compatible with Windows Messanger” (I’m translating from Italian…), it always connects fine but without webcam. The Wi-Fi signal was 100% even when not connecting.
I have purchased the Aspire one with Linpus since December and it always worked well: this problem started more or less one week ago. Live update indicated that everything is up-to-date

I had the same issue with MSN on the messenger. When you go to edit your accounts, you have to check the box that’s labeled “Use a Windows Messenger compatible service” Selecting this option will enable MSN to work; however, there will be no webcam options available.
It’s frustrating, since I know the first three weeks I had my AAO I could do the video calling with MSN, but now I’m not able to. Does anyone know if there will be an update to correct this issue?

updates took a good while but downloaded without problems and installed just fine!
All in all, not bad for £150!
Just one question, its a stupid one but, do i need a firewall with this?

Morris Lee wrote, on February 16th, 2009:

Sounds like you got a 160GB edition,160GB will appear to be about 149GB to windows, and then there is a couple of GB used up for windows thus making it 144GB.
so you got another steal

Hi,
I’ve been reading about the problems everyones been having with wireless connectivity and was wondering if someone could help..
I bought an aspire one about a week ago and the internet was working fine until about 2 days ago. Im staying in a motel and my roommates laptop connects fine to this particular network. The network im trying to connect to has a strong signal and no security.
I havent changed any wireless settings on my laptop, and for some mysterious reason it has stopped working.
If I go outside I can pick up neighbouring wireless networks which have very low signals.
I just dont understand why it would work fine one day then not connect the next. I have the latest version of the wireless driver and im running xp
any help would be much appreciated

Morris Lee wrote, on March 15th, 2009:

the most they can do at the store is put it back to factory default, you are able to do that yourself,
just follow the instructions here

good luck!

I have got both skype and msn working perfectly from your instructions. MSN gave me problems at first but now it is fine. I am very pleased with the aspire one with Linpus Linux. I had a virus attack 2 weeks ago, spread through a thumb drive; my PC is useless right now, the virus got right through the Mcaffee and we are still trying to fix it. It affected my Linpus but only when the thumb drive was plugged in, once the thumb drive was removed my Linpus returned to normal. I can download and play MP3s and also play films on this little wonder. I am very very pleased with it. Keep up the good work Acer.

I’m continuously getting the error message :”Could not connect to server” when the recent Live Updates are completing the final download of the last patch. Which incidentally is an OS kernel update.
Obviously this is a Linpus Lite version of the 8gig SSD 1.5g RAM variety.
Does anyone know if there has been a problem with their servers recently?
Should i just use yum?
Michael Walsh wrote, on April 28th, 2009:
@IT_Dude Sent your message on to Simone (Acer tech support) who came back with this.
You might have figured out a work-around in the meantime but this is what he says anyway:
“No YUM, also because with Acer/Linpus preload all dependencies are cut.
Collect all messages and send them to your local CallCenter, with the exact release of your preload (from the properties screen)
they should be able to see if you missed some patches.
As I know the previous problem with MSN servers was related to some changes made by Microsoft to their server login, so the latest patches should have fixed this issue.”

At this moment, I can only suggest a factory default from the recovery disk, and update again. linus can be tricky sometimes.

I’ve been told to have you check whether your battery is well charged and then try to use the KDE power center

it’s not an official answer but it’s surely a step in the right direction…
