I have downloaded Skype and opened it and extracted it. The defualt program to extraxt it is Xarchiver. I then goto add/remove software and and cannot see it to install it. I have tried extracting the software to other locations i.e. mydocs but still cannot see it in the package manager.

Please help.

Thanks,

Hi, I a, having the same problem. I have downloaded the version on the acer aspire website and it appears in the network menu, however it does nothing and will not launch. I know it has installed and even when I have it under the connect menu it still does nothing. Ive tried to download the Skype.sh but once extracted it will not open stating Archive format not recognised. Help on this would really be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Hi - I have a one year old Linux Aspire One and have tried to follow the above method to load Skype. I have tried both the Fedora9 and the 10+ versions; both download OK and seem to install - but although I have access to the icon clicking on it has no effect. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or do I need to get hold of the Fedora7 version? (I so any ideas where I can find it?)
Thanks

I was able to download/install Skype without a problem on my daughter's 1 yr. old AA1. The instructions here are great, though I'd add that the icon appeared in the connect window without needing to do the xml edit routine.

The only issue I have is though the camera/mic test fine, the camera window doesn't open automatically on a video call (which it does on my desktop). Just wondering if that's a Skype thing or a local setting?

Also, not sure if this was covered, but to move the Skype shortcut to the first 3 that show under "Connect", I just hit the right arrow to open all the available shortcuts and then cut and pasted the Skype one into the first 3.

I have downloaded the skype using the instructions at the top of this page. The icon is sitting in the network section. However when I click on it the programme does not run. Any ideas where I have gone wrong?

I had neglected to remove the exclamation points at the end of the line. So far the system is working fine. Now I want to figure out how to replace the Adobe Reader with Foxit. I think this can only be done with an RPM download?

Hi hurticle I get exactly the same problem but intermittently.
My Skype icon stays for a couple of months and then it disappears. When I open up the XML file I find the line has been commented out. I remove the comments and the skype icon reappears for another month or so and then it happens again. Why is this?

Apart from these minor annoyances I am very happy with the machine

I have successfully installed Skype on my Acer One, following your suggestions. However I can not get Skype into the Connect area. I open the xml file, delete the exclamation point and two dashes, save the file and reboot. When I reopen the xml file, the exclamation and dashes are still there. I don't get it. I have used several other versions of Linux, am finding this one uncommonly hard to use.
