I was having trouble downloading as well, until I found a link given to:
http://physweb.bgu.ac.il/DOWNLOADS/OLD/
then download "skype-2.0.0.72-fc5.i586.rpm
remember to save it and then open it and ignore the errors that it gives you. Then right click and "run program" enter "skype" into the box and it works!!! This site was really helpful once I got the right version of skype. Thank you!!!

Hi,

I am having the same problem as Andy T. (December 31st 2008) I can't see any solutions for him. Please can you let me know what I'm doing wrong. I get to the point where I can see skype.sh in the xarchive. I double click it and nothing happens.

I thought I would try to see if I could install other programs like gimp. I have gone to system, add/remove program, typed in my password, then it takes ages . . eventually I get an error message that says -

unable to retrieve software information:
failure: repodata/00a142116456b893fa1fd84b3e0da139913d27d988e33dbef998b268287519be-primary.sqlite.bz2 from development: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.

Please tell me what I am doing wrong? I am about to give up and wipe the entire drive and put ubuntu on it (but I heard there are problems with the mic and camera) or load Mac OS X snow leopard.

I look forward to hearing anybodies advice.

I have had skype on my computer before but one day it decided to delete itself. I have read all the blogs trying to get it back on my computer, but when i go to the acer support site and hit the link to download skype the following message appears:

550 /netbook/aspire_one_110/linux/application/skype.sh.zip: No such file or directory

When i Try and download skype directly from the website using fedora 10 i get the following message:

/tmp/skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586.rpm could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.

Any help you have would be much appreciated as i am travelling and in desperate need of skype.

Hey everyone,
Thanks for the really helpful advice - I've followed it all and done everything but it's still not working for me. Skype is now on my desktop when I right click, but when I click on it, nothing happens. When I try starting it through alt+f2, nothing happens. When I try that and click the run in terminal box, a black box comes up for a split second and then disappears again. I've looked through the lists on the add/remove software thing (sorry for lack of technical terms, v. new to LInux and not even that computer savvy in general) and I'm pretty sure I've got everything. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

@royal744 Yes you are. All the fuss here is over Aspire One's running Linux OS as it's not the easiest thing in the world to download and run a program with this OS.

If you've got Vista, just head over to the Skype site and download the latest version directly onto your machine.

Happy chatting!
