Messenger not working on Aspire One

I’ve been getting mails from Aspire One users who are unable to log in to Messenger with their Aspire One.
I’ve asked Acer support for an explanation and there is one.
“Microsoft has changed the protocol to login to their servers and our application needs to be updated – it should be ready in the next three days. Updates will be available from the Live Update service”.
So keep your eyes open for an update, OK?

Hi Michael
(Sorry to be asking yet another question but your blog is the closest thing to a support/user forum I have found so far – nice work BTW!)
I was having trouble setting up Messenger on the Acer One – found your blog last night and can now connect to MSN and chat.
However, the video call options are all greyed out (as is the ‘call’ icon).
I’ve tried the Webcam app in the ‘Fun’ area and I can record a video clip, but with no sound. I have even tried to use an external microphone (changed the audio settings input source to ‘E-Mic’ for that) with no success.
Any ideas what else I might try?

Hi Steve,
You’re not alone. I have an Aspire One and it has exactly the same problem.
Apparently this is the problem caused by Microsoft changing its protocols. You can chat, but video messaging is – temporarily – unavailable.
The only advice I can give, seeing as it’s not an issue you can resolve locally, is to have a little patience and keep checking the Live Update page. It *should* be fixed in a couple of days.
Steve S wrote, on August 9th, 2008:
That’s good to know Michael. Thanks for the speedy update.
Do you know if there is a user support forum for the One? I can imagine that these little issues are going to be a real headache for the novice user that this simple device is marketed at – a.k.a. my wife
. For example, our One was set to US keyboard layout which I only managed to solve after the live update produced an icon to change to a UK keyboard in the settings area.

I’ve been seeing quite a few blogs/forums pop up and they’re worth a mention.
The first is Aspire One Forum.
Another is Aspire One User Forum.
I’m sure there are more out there and I apologies if I’ve left any out. Plus, TheAcerGuy is about to have a revamp and there’s a forum section on the drawing board…

I am still unable to connect to msn on the Acer One I’m currently on. I open the live update and it begins to download all the available updates, but always stops just before the last one (180044, keyboard layout settings) so none of the ones that were downloaded before it are installed. Has anyone else received this error? What can I do?

This is the problem everybody is having with MSN on the Aspire One. You can chat but you can’t use the webcam features.
It’s OK. It’s just a problem Acer has to fix with Microsoft. In a few days (hopefully) there will be a patch available for your version (language) from the Live update feature.
Jamie wrote, on August 16th, 2008:
It ended up being an issue with the update servers and not my laptop. The webcam has worked fine for me for MSN, but the mic that’s built in hasn’t worked for me. Anyone else having this issue?

Like magic every thing solved. At least things I have found out were giving me problems. This piece if hardware is realy interesting and gives you exactly what it promises, connectivity. No bad for the acer guys. Good job.

Got my one yesterdsy so i’m not an expert on it, what’s this live update jobby?
Michael Walsh wrote, on August 17th, 2008:
Hi Beth.
Welcome to the club. I got mine two weeks ago and I was sick for the first and on holiday for the second so in a way we’re in the same boat.
The Live Update function is like an official source of updates that your Aspire One downloads and installs with a simple click.
There can be any number of “bugs” that are sorted, smoothed or eliminated since Acer first installed your software and this is how you get the updates.
The one causing the greatest problems at the moment is Microsoft Messenger. It seems that Microsoft changed its log-in protocols since the Aspire One was released and the version of Messenger installed is unable to connect to the Microsoft servers. Deliberate? Whatever, it’s a pain in the arse but slowly seems to be getting resolved. I just downloaded an update and now my Messenger works fine.
You can get to the Live Update function by clicking on the SETTINGS icon from the home page (bottom right of your screen) you will bring up the settings window (obviously). Inside here, you will see the Live update icon (mine’s on the bottom left next to Touchpad).
1. Make sure you’re connected to the Internet.
2. Click on the Live Update icon.
3. Click on “Update” and if there are any updates, they will be listed and you have the opportunity to install them all.
4. Click on Install and your Aspire One will automatically download and install the updates for your netbook.
Hope this helps,
Michael

@lanina
I’ve been away for a week and when I got home this evening did a live Update and my Messenger problem (I couldn’t get the video function to work) seems to have gone away.
I’m going to get in touch with Acer to find out why it’s not a universal fix but I have a feeling it’s got something to do with Simone’s comments in an earlier reply:
Beth wrote, on August 17th, 2008:
Also the mic with the webcam is’nt working…
Beth wrote, on August 17th, 2008:

Michael Walsh wrote, on August 17th, 2008:
No problem Beth.
I’ve been fiddling with my own Aspire One all evening and I’m having the same microphone problems as you. I’ve tried re-adjusting the mic-boost settings by clicking on the speaker icon in the system tray (bottom right) which is the same as the Audio icon in the Settings menu but every time I record a video I’m getting no sound.
Tomorrow I’ll have another play and will ask Simone but maybe in the meantime someone will come up with one of those “Duh!” solutions…

Good luck,

I did the update and everything worked fine!
Then a day or so later, after rebooting, the messenger would go into the background (disapear from the dock) and close down… then it would start and try to connect.. and close down again after 5 seconds.. then close etc…. continuosly.
The only thing I changed was the root password, by doing su sudo and then resetting the password… could this be the problem!?
If so, how do I reset the password back to theoriginal one (which I don’t know what it is)?
Thanks for your help in advance!

when you got aspire one, you should have a recovery cd, it is a white one with a orange circle in the middle, you need to have a external CD rom(USB based). then, insert the CD, during the boot up of the system, press F12 to select boot from the cd drive, follow the on screen instructions to restore your linux to factory defaults

2. Contact sorting to by default to “Status” sorting
3. When I press ctrl+a I can’t select all, is that normal? can I enable it?

Yes I have downloaded all available updates, but it still fails HELP !!!!
Also I am not impressed by the “Aspire One” Mail client. On my Aspire it “Fails to connect” 98% of time, and when it does connect it does not download ALL the mail.
I have left it set to “Leave a copy” on the server. but when I go to try again to download the mail, it must have marked the mail as being downloaded already. So.. Any one else still having Mail problems or Messenger Problems??? All help greatfully received.

An update on my aspire one, I have got a 8GB SD card for my aspire one, therefor, I have 16 gb ish in total(in reality, primary drive is 7.51 GB, the SD card is 7.60 GB)
I also got a small carrying bag(just got back from getting it) a small bag that is enough to hold the aspire one, maybe a small notebook, and the charger/powersupply, it is a single strap one.
I will be getting either a 1GB or a 512 MB upgrade, I will post pics if I get a chance to use my mom’s camera by the time I get the RAM.

to enable sound record, click settings, Sound(or whatever it was called, I can’t remember) when the page opens up, go to the second tab, make sure the bottom of the first section is not muted, and make sure the volume level there is at least over 50% high.
one note, ucviev, AKA the “Webcam” software, does not seem to record sound, so don’t bother test it there.

you loose your harddrive, bye bye, its gone forever.
SSD now days had low write cycles, does not matter how much files you are writing on to the disk
if one of the email containes viruses, hey, guess what? it is on your computer already!

I had my live update running all day yesterday and it just about managed to install most of the updates. I’m glad it finally installed the messenger update because thats all i really wanted, its a bit stupid that you cannon choose which ones to download because i don’t exactly need a Czech language download.
Tip for people struggling – use a wired connection. Wireless just isn’t fast enough to download the bigger updates.
I now have a problem myself though, since installing them i have connected to messenger once, i now have an ‘unable to connect’ message appear every time i try. It also keeps closing the messenger program when i log in, and changing my settings when it does so. I can’t possibly be having software problems already can i?
Wish i’d gone for windows xp tbh.

Guys – all of you – I’m sorry you’re going through this.
@Giorgia – Depending on when the place you purchased your Aspire One from ordered it from Acer, your Aspire One has a software “date stamp” (the way it left the factory). As a result, some need more updates than others to bring them, well, up to date, but a general rule of thumb is a couple of hours…
Daniel’s comment on using a wired connection is a very good one.
The only thing I can recommend to all of you is to keep trying with Live Update. I say this as it hasn’t failed yet since the Aspire One first appeared.
This problem arose almost immediately after Acer introduced the Aspire One, when Microsoft changed the way the software talks to the messenger service (protocols) and hence the need for an update.
Linux is a strange beast and it’s not the easiest of transitions to make but as long as you don’t fiddle and hack like a maniac, you should be able to get it working just the way you want it.
Sometimes Live Update gets overloaded and judging by the traffic boost I had yesterday, many thousands of you are doing exactly the same thing at the same time.
Patience, and keep coming back here for moral support

I get the same live update problem. It has 3 updates remaining, Photo master, update remover patch and support for Huawei CM patch (the last one allows you to uncheck it and I have).
It gets to 100% and then says error cannot connect to server. Even though it has fully downloaded the patches so I would not think it needs to connect to the server.
Also if I click on history it says:
Could not fill updates list
I think Live update must be broken as the latter error does not require any internet connection so it’s not a slow server problem. I wonder if it is broken because it was half way through updating when it gave an error.

Go online and head off over to http://webmessenger.msn.com

Once you’ve reassured everyone you’re still OK despite Linux’s best efforts to ruin your Christmas, do another Live Update.

@Ceej,
Linux is normal, it is just the MSN client that Acer(or someone that Acer paid) made was not as universal to the MSN service updates. An update has been provided, just that everyone is updating, overriding the server’s bandwidth.
And please use more gentle language here, by this time, lots of kids uses internet, and (for sure from this christmas, lots of them is got an Aspire one, thus viewing this page)

As part of the letter I received from Acer Software Product Management team, I’m going to simply paste in the replies to *some* of the issues that have arisen in this post.
It is by no means exhaustive but should go some way to clarifying some of the problems you guys are having.
Many thanks to Sandy, Campbell and Gianpiero for getting this to me.
1. @Beth “the mic with the webcam isn’t working…”
ANS: This is an unfortunate limitation of UCView.
2. @Party Monkey “I’ve been able use the Acer Messenger application to do audio/video web conferencing with Windows Live. But with Yahoo Messenger, I can only do video, not audio. The audio is greyed out.”
ANS: This is a limitation of Yahoo Messenger. We support Webcam sharing only.
3. @Leona-Amy “I can’t use MSN on this either but I can’t download anything like wine. It refuses to let me download or install anything on here at all every time I try to extract the files like it tells me to it comes up with some sort of error.”
ANS: Users try to install Microsoft MSN client to Linux and have some trouble. This needs a virtual machine to simulate Windows and there is no guarantee it will work smoothly.
4. @Cher “I am trying to use microphone on my Acer aspire one and this error comes:
Your microphone or webcam may be busy or not ready. Please check that they are usable and try again. If this doesn’t work, the problem may be with your IM server.
All settings of audio are NOT ON MUTE, please can u help??”
ANS: This error message occurred when another application is using the webcam or microphone, while user enable video chat.
Users need to close the program before enabling a video call.
5. @tiffany “Does anyone know how to change the display name on an aspire one for MSN messenger? I’ve done it on the actual messenger on the computer, but it still remains an old display name. I’ve also changed it on my main computer as well and still the same thing. if I were to use MSN from my HP laptop, I can change it but when I use my aspire one, it does not change!!”
ANS: Microsoft MSN client 8.5 will save User name and description to MSN server. So when the user signs into his or her MSN account from another computer, they can retrieve the name and description.
The Messenger on A1 now doesn’t support this version. We’re working on this feature now and will provide a live update when it’s ready.
6. @Mike G. “I can get the webcam and mic to work with Skype no problem – but it won’t work at all with Facebook. I put in Firefox 3 as my default (works fine btw), and did the Flash 10 upgrade from the adobe site.
Now instead of getting the ‘webcam not found try again’ message in Facebook (after allowing, etc.), now I don’t get any prompts and see a spinning loading wheel, but it never loads.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated – I thought the Firefox 3 and Flash 10 updates would fix it – though I needed to do them anyway.”
ANS: That is Flash player problem. Some web-based messenger systems use Flash to access the Webcam and Microphone for video calls, but it does not seem to work on Linux. Need to check in more detail.
7. @robandjeanne Deaf microphone problem, anyone find a solution? My AA1 built in mic won’t pick up sound. Today I checked out one in Costco that was working. Easiest way to check is to use “sound recorder”. Since Costco’s AA1 works, the deaf mic is not universal.
Someone said to uninstall Realtek completely from cp add/remove. Restart then reinstall it (from a separate copy). I think my mic started working once after this, but next time AA1 powered up no mic.
ANS: Suggest adjusting the volume control. adjust “Capture” volume , select internal Mic as “input source”.
8. @sarah “I need help .. I cant log in on my messenger using the aspire one .. my account is a hotmail account and every time I try to sign in I get a message that says
“Our protocol is not supported by the server.”
can anybody help me ?”
@rachael “I have exact same problem as above.
whats going on with msn? and whats a protocol?
my new aspire one is working fine except for that.”
ANS: Do a live update – it will fix this issue. Please check the Messenger version is 1.02.3003 after update and reboot.
9. @Chris Got the wife one not long ago and works perfect so I got one of the kids one for Christmas and i keeps failing with the updates so she is unable to log into msn messenger, is live update down or is it due to the amount of people trying to update because of them getting them for Christmas?
@Morris Lee >Sometimes it is down, just gotta wait for it. I am pretty sure there are a lot of purchases of Aspire One during the holidays(as gifts) so everyone is trying to update, trying to get msn working to tell everyone on his/her friends list about his new cute little awesome laptop
ANS:We need to improve the infrastructure.
10. @Paige “Hi, my msn is working alrite on my acer aspire one yet sometimes it wont let me reply to people becuase ‘the timout occured’ its becoming increasingly annoying, why does it do this??
and it is annoying when you can only go on webcam to one person, can you have an external webcam that will let you go on to more than one person??”
ANS: This is due to network problem, the bandwidth or a weak Wi-Fi signal. Try to increase the signal strength from the WiFi access point if you can.
For webcam sharing, A1 Messenger only supports one to one. This is our limitation on the linux platform.
11. @jake-jon “hi on my aspire one messenger i try to put webcam on but cant seem to do it coz its greyed out what do i do to stop this?”
ANS: A1’s Messenger doesn’t support webcam sharing for Gtalk and AIM due to tech. limitation on Linux.
12. @elmack “Just completed Linux live update as you suggested. Messenger version listed as 1.02.3003. Family running XP and just downloaded latest version of Messenger for XP. We can now text each other on Messenger, but webcam not working. Their machine says mine is out of date … mine says their software is too old. Any ideas?”
ANS: Suggest to upgrade XP to use Windows Live Messenger 8.1 or 8.5. That can be downloaded from Microsoft web site.
13. @Mike DeSantis “I am stuck. Got the Aspire one for my wife and am running Live Messenger. The messaging capabilities work fine, but the webcam can’t be used. There is no other program running, and I know the webcam works because I can get it to display by running the Acer CrystalEye Webcam application.”
ANS: This user seems to be using the XP version. This is a Error message from Windows Live Messenger. May need to fix the XP webcam driver.
14. @Kjetil “I just got the Acer One, and is now up to date with updates (Messenger 1.02.337), but it still bugs on all the protocols.

This comes up a couple of times an hour, and it disconnect and connects again. Same with the other protocols.
Is there a fix I don’t know of, or what’s up?”
ANS: This is caused by unstable network. Please try to make the Wi-Fi signal stronger. If the Wi-Fi router is yours, you can adjust it from your Router’s settings page.

XP AA1 with 160 GB and 6 cell battery. Deaf mic problem persists. Suggestion was to increase volume control, select “Capture” volume, and set input source to internal mic. Are you talking linux? In XP I haven’t seen any way to specifically set the input source , and have never seen capture as a choice. In XP I’m dealing with Realtek’s Sound Manager and know how to select mic and adjust volume there. Can do similar operations as Realtek from Volume Control (the speaker icon). I’m sure I’ve selected mic and cranked up volume but still have deaf mic.
Since the external mic works, it does appear that internal mic has not been selected, but there is no specific internal mic choice in XP. Since I’ve had the mic working 3 times only to revert to deaf mic after next power up, I believe it is just a software problem. I need to solve it soon or send the unit back.

Sounds like your audio is not configured correctly, make sure you have the driver packed by acer, not from realtek official site, this might be able to fix the problem in XP.
Another thing to remember, remove all the previous audio drivers, reboot, THEN install the new one

There is no live-update for the XP version, only windows update. if all fails, please try Factory default with the recovery disk, YES IT DOES WIPE ALL SOFTWARE YOU HAVE INSTALLED.
you CAN do system recovery from a restore point, to the point where you know the problem did not exist. Click start, right click on My Computers, Click Properties, Select System Protection Tab.
@Teri,
Do another restore, but, other then logging on or change any settings, go straight to the live update, when you finished updating, do a couple restarts, THEN try MSN again.
Cheers!

With xp home acer provides a way of just re-installing the drivers via their acer recovery. In other words you don’t have to do acomplete system recovery. So for example when I am having trouble with the internal mic (deaf mic) I might want to try reinstalling the Realtek HD drivers. The last couple times I’ve tried acer-euro either the downloaded file was corrupt or they said the page was not available. Acer needs more than just one place to get these drivers imo.
However it looks like the exact same version of the drivers are available in acer recovery right on my aa1. Start, acer recovery management, reinstall applications/drivers,contents then only reinstall the Realtek Audio 5.10.0.5628 drivers. Since this looks like the same version as on acer-euro, shouldn’t this be as good as trying to download from the overly busy acer-euro site?

any help to you Daniel or anyone else for that matter?

I too am having the same trouble. It bothered me so much that last night I did a fresh install on my aa1 with linux. Totally amazed how quick it took, and how easy it was. But it didnt fix the trouble with messenger complaining about the certificate chain problem.
Hopefully Acer will be inspired to write a fix for this before we all get fed up!!!

do you have windows or linpus linux lite as your operating system?
because if you have linpus linux lite, at the bottom right hand corner there is a tab that says “Settings” (left of “Help”) click that then click “Live Update” (3rd from left on bottom row)
Sorry but if you have windows as your operating system then i don’t know where your live update function would be.

for bluetooth, download this
ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/netbook/aspire_one_110/linux/application/bluetooth.sh.zip
extract and run the .sh file
that SHOULD get bluetooth dongle(yes that is the technical name)
for messenger, on your homepage(the desktop) click settings, click live update, follow through the wizard should get you updated, reboot, then messenger should work

to download the patches go to “Settings” then click “Live Update” and follow the windows

remove the flash drive/sdcard, the proceed with the recovery

Okay everyone running XP and having microphone problems, I found the solution. This solution works ONLY if your microphone, like mine, cannot be found by your system and is, therefore, ALWAYS deaf, in EVERY application.
Open your MSCONFIG.EXE control panel found by START>RUN and typing MSCONFIG.EXE then pressing OKAY. Select the STARTUP tab. UNcheck the RTHDCPL item. Restart your computer.
Now your Realtek driver is disabled but, magically, microphone comes alive and speakers work great. At startup you will get a dialogue box from MSCINFIG, but you will have the option to turn it off on future startups.

@Robert,
Here’s a tip from Simone in Acer. Try removing the Acer Communication suite patch.
You’ll find it in “live update” -> “history”….
If it works again this means that there is a problem with Microsoft servers and protocols used on the latest patch.
peter wrote, on June 27th, 2009:
The problem is that yahoo is upgrading there servers. and although you could connect before, you cant now. Hopefully acer will include a new patch for pidgin or acer msn soon to upgrade. I have had this laptop for almost a year (an acer asper one, linux version, with 8 gb ssd) and feel some what ripped off with the limitions they have put on the operating system. there are at least 4 softwares that i am running now that are very very old, and although the new software is out there, i cannot upgrade to it. Perhaps they should have put a disclaimer that there software is very old and cannot be updated!!! thats not what linux is suppose to be about, why not sell the same laptop with ubuntu on it?
the idea that i cant upgrade circumvents the idea of linux, hopefully next time around they will get it right! But perhaps the harm is already done.

En mi caso como no es posible desinstalar IM…volvere a INstalar fedora con su CD y no hare actualizaciones con Update sino que las realizare Manualmente las que nesesite solamente para que no me altere otros programas por las librerias.
