Of all the video reviews I’ve published, Morris’s have been the most in-depth.
Morris came from absolutely nowhere (well Canada) and has, I think many of you agree, helped as many people as Simone has. He’s tireless, extremely informed and a total geek
However, once the Aspire One was launched, we ran into a problem. Suddenly, very specific questions were being asked and Morris couldn’t answer them because he didn’t have an Aspire One.
Well, thanks to some serious help from Peter at Staples Canada and an unhealthy dose of generosity on my part, I bought him one, as much to thank him for all he’s done for TheAcerGuy and to give him the raw material he needs to continue being so damned helpful.
I think you’ll all agree he deserved it.
So, once you’re through with his review, feel free to bombard him with questions

Project exFAT – installing vista on the new exFAT file system developed by Microsoft.
I am currently testing Aspire One running on exFAT partition, theory is to install on the 8GB SSD in NTFS(takes forever) then move to another partition, format the 8GB SSD to exFAT then move the files back and make it bootable again. (no one seems to have tried running windows on exFAT according to google search)
exFAT claimed to be made for flash storage, this is why I am thinking of doing this. exFAT has several adventages over FAT32 before it. removed 4GB file limitation, smaller header size(something like that), so my assumption is that this will perform better then XP on a FAT32 partition on the aspire one even though vista should still in fact take longer for each boot.
this is worth a try for me, as musics skips from time to time in XP wmplayer playback. this will probably fix thw write speed issues with how NTFS was handling MLC SSD drives.
Wish me luck and if I have sucesss, I will write a guide on getting this going for your very own aspire one.
peace out,
Morris Lee

exFat kind of works, need a bootloader for it, I have yet to know how to implment that to the partition.
anyone knows how to make a booloader for exFAT please inform me

Vista boot in 40 seconds on aspire one with the original SSD on NTFS, impressive eh?
EWF was used, I will write a guide on how to do it correctly
vlite was used to reduce the size of vista, i now have about 700MB left in c:\ after all the updates O_O

what are your thoughts about this crazy mod?
Ferry wrote, on October 11th, 2008:
Hi Morris, how did you shrink the vista files? would you share the steps?
Morris Lee wrote, on October 11th, 2008:
you can download vlite, it is free, you need a vista installation disk in hand. I gotta get to work, I will fill you in if I got spare time.
Ferry wrote, on October 12th, 2008:
thanks Morris. I just don’t know which components to remove. I’ll try to do experiments with vlite.
Morris Lee wrote, on October 12th, 2008:
you can remove all the extra languages, all the video card drivers(since vista does not even include the driver for intel 950) you can also remove stuff like UAC, system restore.

OMG!! 9 cell aspire one battery!
http://cgi.ebay.ca/6600mA-Extended-Battery-for-Acer-Aspire-One-1_W0QQitemZ370100995958QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item370100995958&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
I maybe getting one of these, if my math is right with the ratio of 3 cell to a 6 cell upgrade, the 9 cell might be able to last up to 10 hours or more!
currently negotiating the price for a 40GB 1.8′ HDD
please give me some advise on the battery investment!

Just an update, installed the replacement 8600m gt, it works, but downclocking issues still occurs, the seller is willing to replace it with ATi 3650. should arrive by next week, little busy this weekend, did not get a chance to write up a guide for changing the video card, but I certainly did take pictures.
Morris Lee wrote, on November 18th, 2008:
Another update with success!! I got my harddrive for my aspire one, 40GB, now I have a full version of Vista installed. index score of Aspire one is 2.7, the HDD is 3.7.
I also got my 3650, for those of you who are still using 8600m gt ot 9500m gs, I suggest this “upgrade” not incredibily fast, but you do have performence gain and the card does not downclock in the middle of the game.
if you are looking for an Acer build 3650, let me know, i can hook you up with a better price. 3D mark06 4400, company of heros DX9 max 46fps avg. Far Cry 2 on high. DX10.1. I am very satisfied when I got mine.
Cheers guys

OMG OMG OMG, I have just experiences one wireless problem, I got my new battery, i am about to test the maximum length I can get so I disabled the wireless using the switch, suprisingly, it won’t come back on when i try to switch it on again. so I shut down the computer and rebooted it, it is working fine again, I hope the problem does not persist

Update: Still testing my aspire one battery, i am very impressed with the battery life so far, it has been 8 full hours, i still have 14% left, and according to windows, i still have 59 minutes left, it was a really good buy.
Morris Lee wrote, on November 28th, 2008:
Update: alright, I think I am done the testing for today, the result is that the Aspire One can last pretty solid 8 hours on this new battery on web surfing.

I have been looking into buying a new laptop. I basically need one for internet, messaging, and word processing for school (all done online) without having to lug around a heavy laptop. The Aspire One looks to be a good choice as I have not read any bad reviews. My question is… With the small size of the aspire one, is it difficult to view websites (Text size etc…) or using word processing software like MS Office 2007? And is it difficult typing on the smaller keyboard?
Michael Walsh wrote, on February 10th, 2009:
Hi Andy S.
It’s not at all difficult to read websites or work on the Aspire One, once you re-adapt to the dimensions of the thing. Give it 15 minutes or so and you won’t notice.
As far as typing, it depends on how much your hands look like Shrek’s (http://education.zdnet.com/?p=2017)
Rich A. wrote, on March 3rd, 2009:
Hi Guys: You have done more with the Aspire One than anyone else I can find on the web, so I’m hoping you can help me with the following: I have an Aspire One with the 8 GB solid state hard drive plus a 8GB SD card in the left hand slot, running Windows XP. Machine overall is great, but I’m having a problem with accessing the 8 GB SD card in the left hand SD slot. I thought that the second SD card would be managed to appear as part of the internal 8 GB C:drive – essentially making a virtual 16 GB C: drive. That is not happening. But if I try to write to that drive directly, I get a “drive is write protected” message (lock is not on the SD card). So I effectively cannot access the card in the left hand SD slot.
Any thoughts on this? So far ACER support has been no help. And all of the reviews I read of systems with this drive configuration are running the Linspire OS. Does it work differently under XP?

Hey if anyone comes up with an exFat method I’d REALLY like to see/read about it. I’ve been trying to devise a way to do it but the only methods I can think of are to tear the machine apart and toss the drive on another machine. This simply because I’ve not seen anything online about being able to boot the exFat disk not to mention I’ve not had the time to make a WinXP install on a Flash drive to see if the installer will allow me to choose exFat as my file system. Even if it would I’d have to have a semi live Windows install to copy my files back to the new exFat drive since *nix only has ro support for exFat ATM. I’m also looking into the EWF layer but sadly all this stuff is retarded cryptic. It’s not that I can’t deal with the technical aspects of this stuff, I just don’t have time to play like I used to. With SSD drives moving into commonality I think there should be a damned fat32 or ntfs to exFat conversion tool or an easy to install EWF package.
Morris Lee wrote, on March 31st, 2009:
@nPHYN1T3,
for exfat, currently it is virtually impossible, you have to make a compatibility layer for windows to boot from a exfat partition, this is what I can make out so far, but too much work.
the SSD’s write is too slow anyways, should just use ewf mod, and yes, I wrote one up for 8GB SSD Vista version here http://www.theacerguy.com/2008/11/aspire-one-ssd-vista-with-ewf-recommends-15gb-ram-2/
well, other than that, you can also use the other mod here http://www.theacerguy.com/2009/01/aspire-one-a110-25-sata/
or you can search up tnkgrl 1.8 inch hdd mod, easier, but the harddrive is slower and more expansive as to GB/$ comparing to the 2.5 inch drives.
