Thanks so much for this – bought my laptop about 4 years ago and having never needed the password since I hadn’t a clue what it was! Had to do it twice as my first password was 6 letters so it didn’t take, but it’s now fine so I’m able to update programmes – thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!!! x

@Frenchie beginner thsnks, tried all the other explanations, but i had to write “sudo passwd” while in terminal to get to the new unix password situation.

I really need some help with my acer aspire 1 its working perfectly ,but it seems one of my children tried to use it and I have lost the home screen you no the 4 windows so I can access the functions etc all I have now is a stripy screen with a search bar in the top right hand corner how do I restore my home screen ?

I have an Aspire one Netbook ZG5.

When I pwr on it ask for a password.
If I F2 still goes straight Password.
F12 also the same.

How can I get past this to reset the password. I never had this before it just started on its own.

Is there a diff safemode or dos option for password reset?

Please any help you can provide would be great.

got to the point where u type ur new password

typed it in hit enter and i got

passwd : authentication token manipulation error

any ideas?

how can I reset hdd (key 70059987) password from acer aspire one.

Thanks. Took my non-techy brain a few tries to figure it out but I eventually managed. Had to use -s not -su
