Setec Astronomy?

After the recent revelations from Macles regarding the next-generation Aspire One models (and in answer to your question Ian Tindale “Isn’t this really the Acer Aspire Three, then?” I wish it were, but the name Aspire One will be used for all iterations of this netbook), I’m wondering if I should open a new section to this site called “The Rumor Mill” after this turned up on my Twitter radar.
How does an Acer-branded Wii rival sound to you?
Maybe we should call the section Setec Astronomy…

ohh, missed the Wii word in that sentence, but Acer version of Wii….. so like a rebranded Wii?

Like I said, I need to start a whole new section on mad rumors and urban legends…
Again, to see what they made of it (and others on Twitter today), go here: http://www.businessinsider.com/report-acer-preparing-a-wii-clone-called-hornet-2009-2
Too bad they missed the real show stopper that’s just around the corner.
Anyone figured out what the title means yet?

Hmm interesting…
What about the rumours of a Acer “game-Console” based on PC hardware?!?!?
Michael Walsh wrote, on March 4th, 2009:
That’s what the Hornet is being toted as.
Close, but no cigar……

I ment a real ‘game-system’, i did not mean the hornet, but maybe the hornet is just a small form PC with a wireless remote like the nunchuck from the wii, not nessaceraly a pure game-console. But well see…
What about the rumors of a new “hand-held” device from Acer, PSP rival maybe?!?!

aspire 3935?

@Rimms…
You’re on the ball, but the wrong one.
High-end will always be just that. A Gemstone Blue is a Gemstone Blue no matter what it’s called, the best technology out there, kitchen sink and everything. But the show stopper is something else entirely (if you ask me).
Let’s just say, less is more.
I’m writing the brochure right now…

@Mr_M Gianfranco Lanci (Acer CEO) has been talking about ultra smart handhelds for years now. In fact if you look at the way Acer’s product line up is shaping out, you’re going to see sub-categories of mobility unlike any other company.
There are one-hand and two-hands devices (pretty obvious distinction) and within those categories we’re going to see a lot of new stuff.
When Acer bought E-TEN, it inherited the models they’ve just launched – yes – but it also inherited the technology, tooling and expertise to do what its always wanted to do with one-hand devices. Remember acer’s coming at smartphones from a computer point of view, not from a telephone manufacturer speccing up its model range and calling it smart. Expect great things…
I haven’t seen a gaming device in the pipeline even though I saw a product prototype document with some really slick gear. Having said that, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if a brief fell into my inbox tomorrow…

I don’t think Acer could conquer a position in the game PC-market, let alone in the console market. So i think it s waste of money and time to invest in that area.
Besides, it’s hardly pioneering, so all and all they would probably would walk one step behind in the developing and application of new technology.
It wouldn’t work.
For the simple reason that they don’t have the reputation. if there is one customer group that buys by reputation, then it’s gamers.
What ACER should focus on IMO, is to build a real gaming laptop whihc can compete withe the highest-end PC-desktop gaming set-ups.
I think they do have the means and the reputation in laptop land!
What Acer should also do is to pay me 500 bucks for this consult
Michael Walsh wrote, on March 18th, 2009:
@Sparkion – HAHAHA! I’m lucky enough they pay me every month for my *real* job – this stuff is free…
I think Gaming’s going to be off the radar for a while longer – the real innovations aren’t there, although new high-end models (Gemstone Blue) are coming.
Really don’t think a full-on gaming console is on the cards. First I haven’t seen anything suggesting otherwise. Second, the infrastructure isn’t in place to make any real impact on the market right now (think about software and accessory franchises, not to mention communities and the reputation (or lack of) you mentioned…). Acer must be (and is) focused on what it does best…
Not long to wait now. The invites should be leaving soon.
