I’ve been dropping hints since August when I wrote the minisite web content and penned the first draft of the launch presentation but no-one got it.
Acer this week launched what I boldly called “the world’s most exclusive netbook”, The Ferrari One.
OK, I don’t have any official pictures (yet) but Trusted Reviews got to see it at the launch and has a pretty good write up over here.
Just in case you’re interested, it’s going on sale on sale on October 22nd to coincide with the launch of Windows 7.
Here’s TR’s opening picture:
The one thing I do have is some tentative specs. These may change as each country specs it individually but it’s a start:
Operating system: Windows 7® Home Premium 64-bit
Platform: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core processor L310
System memory: Up to 2 GB of DDR2 667/800 MHz memory, upgradeable to 4 GB using two soDIMM modules
Display 11.6″ HD 1366 x 768 (WXGA) Acer CineCrystal™ LED-backlit TFT LCD
Graphics: ATI Radeon™ HD 3200 Graphics (good for 1080p HD video)
Storage: 2.5″ 9.5 mm 160 GB1, 9 or larger hard disk drive / Multi-in-1 card reader
Dimensions and weight: 285 (W) x 204 (D) x 24/30 (H) mm (11.22 x 8.03 x 0.9/1.2 inches) – 1.5 kg (3.31 lbs.) with 6-cell battery
Audio: Optimized 3rd Generation Dolby Home Theater®
Welcome back AMD to the party.

I can’t help but wonder why Acer didn’t just put 4GB of ram in to start. It’s a Ferrari after all. But damn I love that red color.

@Peter: more memory – less battery?

@Peter, remember this is a premium product with prices apparently starting at 499 Euros (£435/$730) so you can’t go totally mad with the specs otherwise you’d get an ASP (average selling price) that’s just off the scale and the thing would be a commercial flop.
FWIW I’m getting one regardless (it’s perfect Acer Guy machine after all), and maybe I can convince the PR peeps to send my new reviewers some

Sexy, of course Michael, we are bound to review such shiny toy, XD

Yeah, I can see your point Michael. Windows 7 is easier on RAM than Vista was. I didn’t notice that till after. I read through your preview too quickly.
I really like how it has 2 Dimm slots and has a standard 9.5mm 2.5″ HDD. It will be upgrade friendly that’s for sure. If I was ever in the market for one I’d have to do a little tinkering under the hood too.

I just happen to have an old 500GB notebook drive laying around waiting to be used.

that thing deserves an SSD. Now there’s an idea, get a version with all the trimmings! 4Gm ram, SSD. Call it the F1 version and while I’m dreaming lets get Michael Schumacher to sign them!

I would settle for Kimi’s signature.

I can’t tell what a netbook is anymore. If you told me last year, these were the specs for a netbook, I would have said “It’s too powerful to be a netbook”.
I’d class it as a sub-notebook. Not quite a notebook, but more than a netbook.
