Windows 7 Upgrade Quick Guide
Getting Started
You have three options when installing Windows 7:
· Upgrade current Windows Vista to Windows 7 (recommended)
· Clean installation to replace Windows Vista
· Clean installation to coexist with Windows Vista
Upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7 (recommended)
If you select this option, your original Windows Vista will be upgraded to Windows 7 and all your personal data, settings and applications will be migrated to Windows 7.
Please follow the steps below to complete the Windows 7 upgrade.
1. Preparation
· If your computer is equipped with a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) or smartcard device and you have enabled security features powered by them, please disable those features first.
· Internet access is recommended during the upgrade.
· Insert the Acer Upgrade Kit DVD into your DVD-ROM drive. On the DVD start page, click Start to run the Acer Upgrade Wizard. If the start page doesn’t launch automatically, please double-click autorun.exe from the DVD root folder. The Acer Upgrade Wizard will lead you through completing all the tasks required.
2. Installing Windows 7
· Insert the Windows 7 DVD into your DVD-ROM drive. On the DVD start page, click Install now to start the Windows 7 installation. If the start page doesn’t launch automatically, please double-click setup.exe from the DVD root folder.
· The Windows 7 installer will ask for your installation choice. Please select upgrade.
· During the Windows 7 upgrade, the compatibility report may highlight some problems. Please click Next to continue. Any highlighted problems should be rectified when the Acer Upgrade Wizard updates Acer ePower Management, Acer PowerSmart Manager, Optical Drive Power Management, Acer VCM, Acer Arcade Deluxe, Cyberlink PowerDVD, and Acer Security Suite. For other applications, please check with your vendor for an upgrade.
3. Updating drivers and applications
· The first time Windows 7 boots up, you will see the Acer Upgrade Kit start page again. If not, insert the Acer Upgrade Kit DVD into your DVD-ROM drive. On the DVD start page, click Start to run the Acer Upgrade Wizard. If the start page doesn’t launch automatically, please run autorun.exe from the DVD root folder. Acer Upgrade Wizard will guide you through updating drivers and applications.
· You can also visit Acer’s official website for more drivers if needed.
Clean installation to replace Windows Vista
If you select this option, your current operating system will be replaced with Windows 7. Your computer’s hard drive will be wiped clean of any software and data. Therefore, all personal data and settings, including documents, pictures, files, programs, music and video, should be backed up prior to starting the installation. After installing Windows 7, you should restore all personal data and settings.
Below are the steps for this option.
Please select custom. You will be asked to select a disk volume to install Windows 7 on. Please select the current system volume (usually C:).
2. Installing drivers
· Insert the Acer Upgrade Kit DVD into your DVD-ROM drive. On the DVD start page of the DVD click Start to run the Acer Upgrade Wizard. If the start page doesn’t launch automatically, please double-click autorun.exe from the DVD root folder. Acer Upgrade Wizard will guide you through updating drivers and applications.
· You can also visit Acer’s official website for more drivers if needed.
Clean installation to coexist with Windows Vista
If you select this option, your current operating system will be retained and coexist with Windows 7. Every time you start your computer, you can select to boot either Windows Vista or Windows 7. All your current applications will need to be reinstalled under Windows 7.
Below are the steps for this option.
Please select custom. You will be asked to select a disk volume to install Windows 7 on. Please select a disk volume other than the current system volume. For example, if your current system volume is C:, you can select D:.

Awesome write up! Not judging your method or anything, but here is my very own experiences with Windows 7 installation:
· Upgrade current Windows Vista to Windows 7 (not recommended, it made sleep function just unexpected reboot for the machine, and being a computer technician, I find that clean install has less chance of running into old registry problems then an upgrade)
· Clean installation to replace Windows Vista
(very very recommended ONLY if you backed-up all your Programs and Documents and have some knowledge with harddrive partitions)
· Clean installation to coexist with Windows Vista
Upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7 (Do you mean like dual boot? if so, it is very recommended, as you can slowly migrate over to Windows 7 and get your apps ready then remove Vista after.)
After all, just my experiences.

Have a new Aspire 4810TZ that worked fine before I started the Acer Win 7 install. Picked upgrade from Vista and everything goes fine until Step 3. The OS loses the DVD drive– says it can’t find it, the open drive button doesn’t even work. If I reboot and go to the bios, the dvd drive is still there and the open drive button works again. In fact, if I boot on into Win 7 the drive seems to work until the acer install program pops up and wants to do step 3 again.
This is a software problem with the Acer install process. Any suggestions?

TechieDiva, updating the BIOS worked. Since I used to work for two different BIOS companies, I had no problem in updating the BIOS. How in the heck is a normal user supposed to know that? The online Acer “help” wanted me to ship it to a repair depot which I wasn’t about to do. I knew it was a software problem, just needed someone like you to tell me what.

( nothing else on the system yet, they were purchased specifally for one piece of software and not used until completely setup. ) Now Both Laptops have the same Problems.
Battery meter in Task bar no longer works, Miner problem I can live with, But,,, the sleep function no longer works, and I have problems shutting down. I ‘ve be a ” IT help desk” person since 1989. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you resolve it?

@Derek,
I sent in your question to Simone at Acer support as I was intrigued to hear his response.
As you can imagine, it’s complicated. Needless to say to the uninitiated (like me), do not try this at home:
“Unfortunately I’ve never had this machine to try out so I’m unable to give a definite answer.
However, to see how the power control works, you can use this command from Command Prompt with administrator rights:
powercfg -energy -output <filename>
and afterwards
powercfg -energy -trace
at least that will give you an idea about what is going wrong..”

I don’t think you can “undo” however, you can probably try backing up your files first and do a clean install of Windows 7.

I did a Vista Ultimate to Win7 Ultimate upgrade on my Aspire 8920G last week using a Microsoft Upgrade DVD and then downloaded all the updates I could find from the support site.
I’m also waiting for my ‘free’ upgrade DVD for Vista Home Premium to Win7 Home Premium. Will that include the ‘Acer Upgrade DVD’ (which I hadn’t previously heard about).
I initially had some trouble with the Bio Protection software and ‘fingerprint’ login which was fixed by getting the right version (6.2.56).
My only remaining problem is that the Cinedash volume control doesn’t work. I’ve tried 4 versions of Launch Manager (which I gather handles it) under Win7; all the other controls (rotate, enter, forward, back, launch arcade deluxe, etc) work, just not volume. Since I took the precaution of keeping a copy disk image of my Vista setup I was able to boot that and confirm it isn’t a hardware problem – it all works fine under Vista. Does the upgrade DVD include a fix for this or is there a version which works?

Got the Acer Timeline (4810T) with Vista and went through the upgrade process (although I chose to do a clean install).
The upgrade wizard only wanted to install three apps after Win 7 was installed, but I am not sure what these are for.
I’ve found that if I put a DVD in the drive (the driver disk for example) and then press the eject button on the machine, the DVD icon disappears from My Computer and it no longer shows in the Device manager. After a reboot it is back again but only until I eject another disk. Some DVD’s even give an error message now along the lines of not authorised before the icon disappears (and before I have pressed the eject button).
I also read the comments on other sites about the optical power management software in the apps folder of the config/driver disk, but looking in there I see two versions. First question is which one should I use?
I also see lots of other drivers in the application folder of the config/driver disk but there’s no guidance on what is applicable to my Acer model. I see the same thing on the European Acer driver website. So second question is where can I find out what is applicable?
Could my DVD icon disappearing be to do with my BIOS version? I could not see any BIOS upgrade programs on the DVD and going through the upgrade wizard I did not see anything saying it was upgrading the BIOS. I did find some bios updates on the Acer website but not for my model. Question #3 – any links or should I avoid this option?
One of the 3 ‘applications’ the config wizard installed after Win 7 was an update to the Intel Series 4 Graphics drivers. On Windows update there appears to be a newer version of this. I’m a bit reluctant to allow Windows update to install it because I started experiencing severe slowdown sometime after installing a similar update in Vista, but I did install other drivers offered to me from Windows update so it could have been any one of them. However I suspect the graphics drivers as the machine after a while would crawl to the point where it looked like something was consuming CPU usage, but in the task manager it showed no single process (showing all users) taking up much. Anyone had any issues like this?
Final question, there were loads of applications on my Acer laptop “out of the box”. Like the Acer games service (forget it’s exact name now), a drive/folder lock/encryption etc. I’ve only been able to find the PowerDVD software on the config/driver disk. Is the other software not available for
Sorry about all the questions, but I’ve spent several hours now with trial and error and not getting very far. I appreciate any help you can give.

About the ‘DVD disappears when you eject’
I experience the same thing – when the eject button is pressed the whole DVD device disappears from the system – not only the icon, as a device – from device manager too.
Under Linux I saw in the syslogs that the SATA bus gives an i/o error when you press the eject button and thus system disconnects the device and resets.
I was ready to take the laptop for warranty, but today I investigated further and just found that if you don’t use the eject button, but instead right-click on the device (in windows explorer) and select ‘eject’ it ejects and then works just fine. Same if you use the ‘eject’ command line tool in Linux.
So obviously the problem is with the eject button itself, not with the DVD device, nor a driver problem because it exists under Linux as well. Either a bios bug or bad engineering, but that’s how it behaves. Let’s hope Acer will find the problem and will be able to offer a solution that does not include going to the service, something which I can not afford (to stay without my laptop even for a day).
Hope that helps someone.
Thanks.

To find the Launch Manager go to the Acer website/Service and Support/Driver Download. Select Notebook/Aspire/Aspire8940G. The Launch Manager is under the Application tab.

I’m just suffering through the disappearing DVD act with my Acer 4810 T as I worked to do a clean install of Windows 7.. Earlier with VISA Business still in use I had suffered erratic activity of the curser whether using the touchpad or an external mouse. In retrospect, I also encountered the DVD problem but, pending installation of the ACER supplied Win 7 upgrade I did not bother to install any more programs from a DVD and thus avoided further problems. My local independent retailer upgraded the firmware for the mouse. That problem, less frequent, remains. The DVD problem was attributed to energy management shutting down the DVD when it was not used for awhile. If so, surely it would have awakened when I used the eject button. I was asked to await installation of Win 7 and see if the mouse problem was solved. All Win 7 has done is highlight the DVD situation and my retailer suggests that I failed to install the necessary drivers. I left the machine with him to do that. I’ve been told that no one else is having the problems that I have.
Reading the foregoing entries indicates that that response is simply untrue. When installing Win 7 the ACER guide showed 3 steps that would be followed. 1. Insert the ACER upgrade guide. 2. Insert the Win 7 Installation DVD and 3. Reinsert the ACER guide. My machine went through the first two steps and then acted as if it was finished. At that point, with the Win 7 disk still in the drive, the drive disappeared as described above. A reboot restored it till I tried to eject the DVD. Then an alert warned me that no anti virus program was found. Unable to get the AV program DVD recognized,I downloaded AVG and installed it.No problem. Hesitant to try anything else and lacking access to the DVD drive I quit and took the b—- machine to the retailer with the AV DVD still in the drive. Naturally when they started the machine the DVD was accessible and the eject button worked. I got some funny looks. Nevertheless I left the machine for them, as they said, to install the necessary drivers. I just wish that I had seen this site beforehand.
I have Win 7 on my HP desktop machine and it works fine. I’ve never had any problems with 2 Toshiba laptops and an antique IBM laptop that I rebuilt so I’m not a novice at computer setup and maintenance. I bought the ACER because of the fantastic battery life and, right now, that is all that I can say is any good about it. I’m told that ACER is trying to increase their market share in Canada. This machine and attempts to get service don’t impress. Any advice would be much appreciated as I suspect that I will not get a healthy machine when it comes back from my retailer.
Peter D wrote, on December 19th, 2009:
No word from my retailer yet on the fix/condition of the ACER. But, another question comes to mind. When Win 7 appeared to have been installed all that showed on the desktop was the Recycle Bin. I now can’t remember where but I checked for other programs and got a “no programs installed” notification. I knew that IE at least was there as well as the AV program but…I presumed that some would be when I was able to reinsert the Upgrade Guide disk. I quit trying things before I got around to doing that. At the retailer, clicking on “All Programs” brought up a list of basic Microsoft programs. I again received odd looks. Since I had had the machine for about 4 months I did not expect, thankfully, to get the trial time sensitive AV program, Office 2007 and the like that had come with the initial OS load.
My new question. Did program short-cuts or icons appear on your desktop when you installed Win 7 free issue on your ACER? Short list please.
Ron wrote, on December 21st, 2009:
Hey Peter,
For me, everything was retained after doing Win7 install: Files, folders, shortcuts, programs, everything…except of course, the new look/features and different screenshot. This was all without doing step 1 or 3.
I do remember Win7 telling me I had no Antivirus program installed when in fact, I did. After a restart, it did finally recognize it.
(Quick off topic side note: Myself (8 viruses)and a friend (3 viruses) both got viruses, not prevented by AVG. Comodo may be a bigger resource hog, but found and removed viruses AVG did not, and its also free. Better, IMO)
So far, everything has been functioning as it should. Maybe Acer provided their disc for those, like yourself, that have disasters. I don’t know. Again, I did not do step 1 and 3, and the custormer service guy was the one who said to just use the win7 install disc(step 2).
Go figure.
Peter D wrote, on December 23rd, 2009:
Thanks Roy,
I got the ACER back two days ago and have not had an opportunity to install any programs yet. It did establish a connection to my internet server, installed a few updates and mysteriously retained at least one program,Oxford Reference Library, that I had installed from an old disk that had come with a British computer magazine. As I indicated, I had done a supposedly clean install. You go figure I can’t…..
The retailer said that they had installed a fix from ACER that is only available to retailers. I did not catch what it was and time will tell if everything is working OK. In retrospect, I wish that I had read your Step 2 only install before I followed the book and tried to do 1,2,3.
As to anti-virus programs, I’ve used AVG for years with no problem. My ACER now has ESET NOD32 anti-virus installed. A 1 year complimentary copy came with the ACER and the retailer says that it is the best! I’ll try it. In the meantime I’ll look into Comodo
In the new year I’ll hopefully report that everything is wonderful. I’m not too optimistic.

I installed VMWare tools – they crashed after an auto-update. I couldn’t easily get rid of them. So I hoped the windows 7 upgrade would help me stability wise. But after 6 hours and on step 2 of the install, it fails. Just decides to restore vista; saying the system isn’t compatible. This is pretty much mint in box beside me installing itunes and virtual box (that works just fine where vmware did not.) I’d love to downgrade to XP – but I have the home version of vista. Guess its time for a super annoyed call to tech support. Oh, and frequently the machine goes to sleep and doesn’t wake. Yay.

Timeline 4810TZ with 4G RAM. Vista 64 Home premium
I have now done the install 4 times (not counting my reverting to Vista once) and still haven’t got it working properly.
First time) Normal upgrade to W7. Failed to complete when installing the application packages, in particular the Cyberlink PowerDVD v8. Lost the DVD and 4810TZ wouldn’t shut down properly. Ran the Acer upgrade wizard but it kept getting stuck at the same place. I noticed that Power DVD was installed already so I unchecked it. It then finished the install but was really in a bad way. It wouldn’t shut down.
2nd Time) I reran the whole upgrade in the 3 steps from the 2 disks (W7 was already on but it seemed to run OK). Same problems. PC was hopelessly damaged and wouldn’t shut down, slow on starting new tasks. Performance Index utility would just hang and couldn’t be ended, even with Task Manager etc. Wore out my finger holding down the power button so mant times.
Tried a restore but the DVD was out of action so it kept crashing half way through the install (using my previously made recovery disks)
3rd time) Installed W7 directly from the W7 disk, not the upgrade, a fresh install. W7 kindly made a big directory with the olds system so that I could get the files I needed. Everything worked normally except it didn’t have the latest drivers and apps. The webcam and touchpad worked only in the most basic way. Asked Acer support who gave me a link, they said

Well there are many drivers, which ones do I use?
The DVD now works so I did a recovery using the same recovery disks and knocked myself back to Vista which works beatifully BTW.
4th time) I redid the install but instead of an upgrade I did a fresh install (using the Acer upgrade), bearing in mind that I am back to Vista. Process went fine except that it got stuck again at the part where it re-installs the utilities.
I did get some feedback (eventually) from Acer regarding which drivers to install, it is as follows

I have not re-installed Vista 3 time and “upgraded” to Win 7 4 or 5 times. The reason is that I follow Acer’s instructions and they like to say things like “do a fresh install” without concern for your time.
Follow the on-screen instruction to restore your system.
Take the following as an example
1) Power up your system
2) Press the CD-ROM eject button and insert the System CD
3) Close the CD-ROM tray
4) Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot the system.
5) Press F12 to select the boot drive option when you see the Acer splash screen
6) Select Boot from CD option
7) The system will boot from the System CD (CD 1)
9) When the restore from CD function is complete and the system is booted into Windows, re-insert the System CD and let the CD auto-play.
10) Click the “Restore to factory default”
11) Remove the System CD and insert the “Applications CD”. Re-install the desired applications from this CD.
This requires – 2 – restores, step 8 and 10!!!
I could not get step 8 to work and it seemed a waste of time anyway, I eventually went to step 1 which did work. I have long ago given up any hope of recovering my data.
Nonetheless it seems that there are some drivers that need to be downloaded if you want to use Windows 7. I can’t say yet how stable things are with Windows 7 and the new drivers and even during the installation I had major freezes … but … it seems to be OK.
If you have recovery disks you can always go back to Vista by setting your boot sequence to DVD first and then booting with the recovery disk #1, then following the menu’s.
I had trouble recovering my data this way, it always asked for the “correct” disk but when I recovered back too factory defaults it always worked OK.
When you are back to Vista you can then always try to upgrade to W7 again by whatever process you like.
I suggest, from Vista,
1) back up your data on some other media
2) recover back to factory defaults (at least 3 hrs). At this stage I uninstalled all those games from Oberon, eSobi and other stuff I didn’t want to see again
3) Upgrade to W7 steps 1 and 2
4) Immediately install the new DVD and Chipset drivers from Acer support via internet
5) Do the upgrade stage 3 installs
Here is a link that I used for the SATA drive and power management application
http://www.support.acer.com/acerpanam/notebook/2009/acer/aspire/Aspire3810TZ/AspireM5800faq2.shtml
I was told to download
=the chipset driver
=the SATA driver
=the Optical drive M application
The drivers and applications can be found at
http://www.support.acer.com/us/en/drivers_download.aspx
Remember to select *your* vesion of Windows
I still had trouble with freezes and not being able to shut down and I had to use the power button several times. Be patient with some of the delays, some stuff seems to take a long time to respond. My SD card access was a problem which I hope has now disappeared.
Win7 itself will update quite a few drivers, you have to go and look at the updates available as shown in the system tray under the action items (little flag)
I did the long process because I wanted to retain my Acer applications in Win7. They are not necessary but Acer won’t tell me how to get them back except by gaoing back to Vista factory default and then upgrading. If you don’t care for PowerDVD8 and AcerGrid and Launch manager then you can do a Win7 clean install and loose all your data. I expect yoiu will still have to install the new drivers.

Rick; if it is a quickcam – you may be out of luck. Many of the older models (like zoom) don’t have drivers for vista/7. Strangely I had mine working through vista via virtualbox of XP.
I got 7 installed by removing sobi, quickcam drivers, and itunes. Then it went. But it blew away my virtualbox network driver. Took me a while to figure that out. And my HP 6500 stuff didn’t work under 7 – I had to get an update – and it didn’t update several files – so had to resort to a clean install. Now my printer works too.
My only trouble now is I cannot shut down my machine. It bluescreens every time.

Got a 4810TZ with Vista then got the Acer Win 7 upgrade disks. The upgrade went reasonably smoothly except I experienced the DVD going AWOL. I tried the registry fix but I’m not sure what actually fixed it. All my software was still there except Winlocker. I contacted Acer who were no help at all. They suggested that it wasn’t available on Win 7. Then I found it along with all the other pre-installed software. It gets installed by the Acer drivers and software DVD. But ionly t can be accessed through the Windows Mobility Center in Control Panels. Acer have added a couple of buttons on it.
My problem has been that dual screen no longer works properly using any video driver. The Win 7 driver is hopeless. The best results have been using the old Vista driver. Has anyone else had this issue?
I’m thinking of trying a clean install but using a different hard drive so I can go back if it doesn’t work.

Hello everybody,
I just received my win7 upgrade dvd in the mail.
- Will a clean install / acer upgrade mess with my other partitions?

Quick question. I ran the acer upgrade wizard and get as far as the “select model” page but my model is not listed even though it is eligible for the upgrade. Acer sent me a “patch” kit but it didn’t change anything (ran it a few times). All of a sudden when I call acer they are telling me my warranty is up and can’t help me. I bought my computer 2 months ago and am not happy with the “customer service” acer has provided me so far. I am wondering if I select a different model number when installing how bad it will screw up my computer. I would take it back to the store for help installing the upgrade but that’s an hour away! Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks!

I have an acer aspire x1200. After upgrading from windows vista to windows 7 home premium (using the free acer upgrade kit) I am unable to burn cd/dvd. Blank disks are not recognised. Everything else works fine. I contacted acer support; they recommended installing the latest chipset which I did but the problem persists. I also followed the instructions given by windows support editing the registry (deleting upper and lower filters) but nothing has changed. Can you give me any suggestions?

Anyone tried upgrading the Aspire 5670?
Upgrade advisor tells me the machine can run it but there are no official drivers through Acer.
A quick online search shows lots of driver packs on sale from 3rd parties; but little more info.

@JR,
You should be able to do a custom install as the hardware supports Windows 7 itself.
Here should be the drivers you can use from vista for 7:
Bluetooth
Camera (webcam)
Cardreader
Modem
Touchpad
VGA
You can get the audio driver for 7 from http://www.realtek.com.tw
