Ady Gil – not your average workstation

Ok guys, just a quick update on the Ady Gil, part of the Sea Shepherd’s arsenal against Illegal Whale Hunters and now home to a bunch of Acer computers.
I’ve been receiving daily updates from the captain of Ady Gil, Pete Bethune and thought you’d like to share them.
If this seems off-topic, well it isn’t. It’s a cause I support (through this blog), it’s a place where Acer computers are used to coordinate operations and report on progress, and more importantly it concerns something we as a global society should ask ourselves whether we’re prepared to ignore. These guys aren’t and have put their lives on the line to stop it and for that alone they’re damned heroes.

Dear Michael,
I’ve been so busy picking up rubbish that I haven’t had time to fill you in on those busy weeks leading up to the event. The cleanup was a great success and now it’s time to tell you about how we made it happen. It all started with mapping the rubbish…

Earthrace – the new challenge.

Remember my involvement with the Earthrace initiative? Well first of all, here’s what Earthrace has become:
The reason I’m writing is that we’ve finally managed to start the bureaucratic ball rolling and are leaping through hoops of fire to try and get them some Acer Timeline notebooks in time for departure.
Getting Acer involved in this is no ordinary feat. The Acer Guy will always be a safety net for any involvement in this but you’ve got to admit this is one hell of politically charged mission: In Pete’s own words, “there will certainly be some risks involved and hopefully we will come back in one piece“. You can just imagine the looks on the faces of the suits in Acer when this proposal lands on their desk for approval later on today.

Today’s my birthday – big number, don’t ask – and I’m taking the day off to spend time with my family. It’s a tradition I picked up from an old acquaintance and try to maintain every year. It’s not always possible but this year it looks like I’m going to get away with it.
But just [...]

I was just looking through the Acer Australia site looking for contact details for one of The Acer Guy readers and stumbled across this.
Before you start sending me questions about where and when, this is the first I’ve heard of it so maybe it’s related to an Acer Australia initiative which, if true, puts it [...]
The thing about causes…

The idea of dedicating a section of TheAcerGuy to worthy causes has been sitting at the back of my mind for a while and as I mentioned in a previous post, Emily’s mail from Earthrace really snapped it into focus.
However, before you find yourself faced with a little old lady armed with a collection [...]

I thought you guys would appreciate something altogether new.
The Acer Guy has been sitting here for the past three years building up a community of supporters all helping Acer customers out across the world. We’ve gained a lot of traction and have done more than I ever imagined for the social media cause. Thing is I’ve been thinking that there’s a lot more to social media than sorting out personal issues and expanding Acer’s brand footprint.
A new chapter (or two)

OK, summer’s over – or at least it will be for me on Monday – and so now’s a good time to take stock of how many people we’ve helped, what we’ve done and what we can do to improve still further.
First of all, let’s get that first question out of the way. So far it’s 364,873.
This summer I had a long hard look at the idea behind the “community” we’ve built up on The Acer Guy.
