The Name Game

Posted by User ImageMichael Walsh (Check me out!) on Sep 04 2008 | Tagged as: Engadget, Gateway, Packard Bell

OK. Here’s a twist on my 9 to 5…

Before any of you post this to Engadget or Digg this is all hypothetical. Sort of.

As many of you know, this year Acer bought a bunch of amazing companies. Gateway, Packard Bell and the one they haven’t yet used, E-Ten.

Do your homework and you soon discover that E-Ten is also known as Glofiish, manufacturers of some pretty smart phones and handheld devices.

Now let’s just say - hypothetically - that the next big (read “interesting”) thing from Acer is a new smartphone. What would you call it?

That’s right. You.

I’m inviting you guys to submit names for some product I have no idea will ever be produced. Actually that’s not true because if they never make something why did they buy the company?

Anyway, if and when we’re asked to come up with a name (unlike the Aspire One) I’ll submit the best suggestion to the marketing management as part of my presentation. At that point it’s up to chance (and persuasion) but think how cool it would be if the name came from the people most interested in buying it.

Crazy Blue

Posted by User ImageMichael Walsh (Check me out!) on Mar 15 2008 | Tagged as: Acer, CNet, Engadget, Gemstone

It’s been really interesting keeping track of the Gemstone Blue this week (well from Wednesday).

The lastest sites to publish articles are Cnet’s Crave and of course, Engaget.

Crave has never minced its words (remember their reaction to the original Gemstone…? Phew!!)

Still this time round the Blue seems to have made a slightly more positive impression:

Acer advanced its plans for world domination with the announcement of two multimedia-oriented laptops in the brand-new Gemstone Blue series. Aside from their crazy unique media control console, the laptops’ key advancement is their 16- and 18-inch displays, which should be better for viewing HD content.

Love that “crazy unique”.

Their main article on the Gemstone Blue is here.

Engadget has possibly the best slide show of the launch event and I strongly recommend you check it out, if only to see what you missed ;-)

Again, Engadget’s main article is here.

Acer to buy Gateway???

Posted by User ImageMichael Walsh (Check me out!) on Mar 21 2007 | Tagged as: Acer, Engadget

This is getting worse than the European pre-season football player market…. Found this on Engaget.

Is Acer getting ready to buy Gateway? There’s no official word from either company, but the Associated Press reports that shares in Gateway jumped today after analyst firm ThinkEquity released a report concluding that Acer was considering making an offer for the company.

read more | digg story

Both Acer and Gateway have denied that any negotiations are underway, with Gateway yesterday issuing a stern “we are not in talks with Acer“, while the story gets slightly more coverage over on Business Week.

Ooohhh the power of rumours!

The flipside of Tablet technology

Posted by User ImageMichael Walsh (Check me out!) on Nov 22 2006 | Tagged as: Acer, Engadget, Tablet PC

Here’s a great one for conspiracy theorists.

I got sent a link yesterday (thanks Richard) to an interesting article on Engadget that illustrates a law case brought against Acer and other Tablet PC manufacturers.

The gist of it is that just as the Tablet has reached the end of its life (see my post yesterday), a man in Oregon has decided to sue Acer, Gateway, Toshiba, HP, IBM, and Fujitsu for violating his 1996 patent “Hinge Assembly for Electronic Devices”.

The strange thing is that this same man appears to have some dodgy friends … Read the link in the responses section to find out who…
