On other websites for motherboards and laptops I've owned, the vendor has described what the updates in the BIOS did on a functional level. For instance, an HP bios update on my wife's older laptop enabled use of 4 GB sticks of ram. Does anyone know of a place for pure BIOS discussions? The acer website is generally lacking in any detail. I'm specifically looking for 7736z info.

This past weekend I bought my wife an Aspire 1 D257. After charging the battery, I turned it on, noted that the battery was 100%, unplugged it, and gave it to the wife to use. In less than 2 hrs the battery was dead. What? No way I say. But true.

The reviews I read on the D257 indicated up to 8 hours of battery life. I would have been happy with 4 hrs, but can't handle less than 2 hours.

Solution? I would like to find an extended life battery (i.e. 6 cell) for the D257, but so far I am unable to find a source.

HELP ME PLEASE! Cry for assistance before I have to take it back to Walmart for my money back.

Hi. I'm interested in the same thing.

Have a T671 with an 820D and would like to update it a bit.

I've heard that some Core2Duo's will work and some won't. But I don't know for sure which series will.

I suspect that the E6xxx and E4xxx will work as long as the FSB is 1066 or less.

Can someone confirm this please.

I have the lastest BIOS R01-B0

On Tuesday, Acer chairman JT Wang warned the opposition that his company has moved away from purely defending its position in the market as seen in 2011. Instead, Acer is now in full attack position and poised to deal a vicious blow from four specific angles: ultrabooks, netbooks, tablets and smartphones. The chairman made his virtual war cry during Acer's ceremony for the Lunar New Year.

Acer's strongest blow, according to JT Wang, will be on the ultrabook front. The company will reportedly launch four new models in 2Q12 alone, and then an additional, unspecified number of ultrabooks sporting a tasty pricetag of $699 to $799 USD the following quarter. Acer president Jim Wong added that the company will adopt a passive strategy over pricing, that going forward, user experience and demand will become the major selling points rather than a competitive price tag.

In the tablet sector, Acer plans to steer clear of the high-end and low-end markets ruled by Apple's iPad and Amazon's Kindle Fire respectively. Instead, Acer will attack via the mid-range avenue priced between $299 and $499 USD. Currently this specific market has an estimated shipment scale of around 10 to 20 million units, but that may change once Apple reportedly introduces the iPad 3 which addresses both the mid-range and high-end markets.

As for Acer's netbook assault, the company assumes that developed countries will sway towards the ultrabook form factor. However the shipment volume of netbooks in emerging countries is still growing, allowing Acer to maintain its 45-percent worldwide market share. But eventually that will come to an end, as the netbook and ultrabook sectors are expected to merge into one happy segment within the next 18 to 24 months.

Tuesday’s report did not offer details surrounding Acer's smartphone assault, so stay tuned.

my partner's laptop randomly turns itself to sleep mode or on occasion actually turns off. She uses it for playing games at times but it also turns off/sleep mode while just looking at the internet or playing music. It is always connected to a power supply as the battery died sometime ago. I thought it might be over heating but it also turns off shortly after starting up, and the vents are dust free. Ive also tried to turn off sleep mode/hibernate and it still continues.

(Good name by the way.)
I just looked up the batteries for the 6930 for you. They are as follows:

Battery SANYO AS-2007B Li-Ion 3S2P SANYO 6 cell
4400mAh Main COMMON Normal Type
BT.00603.042
Battery SONY AS-2007B Li-Ion 3S2P SONY 6 cell
4400mAh Main COMMON Normal Type
BT.00604.025
Battery PANASONIC AS-2007B Li-Ion 3S2P PANASONIC
6 cell 4400mAh Main COMMON PSS
BT.00605.021
Battery SIMPLO AS-2007B Li-Ion 3S2P PANASONIC 6
cell 4400mAh Main COMMON PSS
BT.00607.016
Battery SANYO AS-2007B Li-Ion 4S2P SANYO 8 cell
4800mAh Main COMMON
BT.00803.024
Battery SONY AS-2007B Li-Ion 4S2P SONY 8 cell
4800mAh Main COMMON
BT.00804.020
Battery PANASONIC AS-2007B Li-Ion 4S2P PANASONIC
8 cell 4800mAh Main COMMON
BT.00805.011

The six cell batteries are the 11.1V, and the eight cell are the 14.8V.

There you go.

I'd be wondering why I had such battery problems though if I were you. I'd expect more than one hour from a new one. That depends how heavy you are using it though. Mostly a battery will last for about two and a half hours idling. If you run the laptop at load, I guess an hour and a quarter to hour and a half.

You do however have to condition new batteries, and re-condition them every now and then. Also don't leave them continuously plugged in if you are not using them for weeks or forever.

@ ziik,

Yeah you need a blu ray decoder like Cyberlink Power DVD 10 edition.

VLC is ok; it is a free app that decodes/plays DVD's, not blu ray.

If you have the original Vista Re-installation DVD's that came with your Acer 8920, then Acer's decoder is on there.

Look for it and install it. It's called Acer Arcade Deluxe. They come in standard definition and blu ray definition versions.

Otherwise you have whiped the program, by installing Win7. There is one option left where you might be able to recover the Acer Arcade.

1. Download and intall the Acer eRecovery (from the Acer eManagement apps) software for your 8920, from Acer. Run the Acer eRecovery program. If it will allow you, then you can make re-installation discs for your laptop. They will be Vista discs, but for now you are not re-installing.
If you succeed, find the Acer Arcade Delux on the 'drivers and software' you have made. OK it's a Vista version, but it will run, and it's probably the same as the Win7 version.

This proccess relies on still having the hidden recovery partition on your HDD. It is from there that you eRecovery finds the data it needs to make the recovery discs.

2. Alternatively if you don't mind re-installing, and the eRecovery option does not work, try the following. Find the recovery keys for Acers. I think they are Alt F10. Press these at reboot, and you laptop will go into recovery mode, if the recovery partition is still on your HDD. That will restore your laptop to factory condition Vista installation. From there you can make recovery DVD's to aquire your Acer Arcade Deluxe.

Of course you would then have to re-install Win7, once you have the program you need.

(By the time your 8920 is back to Vista state, Acer Arcade Deluxe will be installed, and you could effectively just copy the installtion folder of it from 'program files'. That folder should run Arcade from say your desktop, but for an installation, I think you need the .exe application.)

U6b36ef.

If you wish just to check everything is ok before you do anything, you can download the Cyberlink PowerDVD10 30-day trial. That will runand play blu-rays, but you'll have to register it, and get emails from them now and again. Ha ha.

Hopefully someone here will set me straight, but before someone says replace the battery with the same voltage as the old one, I'll explain why I'm cautious...
I bought this Aspire 6930G (model 583G25Bn) a while back, as a refurbished unit. Therefore it didn't come in the original packaging and it's possible that the battery was pulled from another unit. Back then the battery would only last around 30 minutes then the laptop would switch off without battery warnings. I only had a 30 day warranty so got a replacement battery from the supplier, which lasted about an hour initially but fairly quickly went the same way as the first battery. Now the battery will last around 5 minutes before the laptop just dies, so it's a case of keeping it plugged in all the time. Otherwise this has been a good machine.
So I was looking at buying a replacement battery and noticed that both 11.1V and 14.8V types are listed for this model. So, can anyone clarify which is the correct type? I'm unsure whether the 11.1V that I already have is correct and I doubt the supplier would have even bothered to check if the right battery was supplied. The DC rating on the laptop is 19V, 4.74A, if this helps at all. I checked on the Acer online store and they don't list the 6930G, but the 6920G, which I assume is the same, but they don't state the battery voltage, only that it's 8 cells and 4800mAh, which I think may be the 14.8V type

Recently, when I turn on my Aspire 5820tg, no networks are found and a red X is over my signal bar. I check to see if wireless is turned on. It is. Device manager says the all drivers are up to date and my adapter is working. Then it starts working after a day, and stops again after being turned on. Any ideas what is wrong?

The most important thing is you have power, so you can recover.

Also anyone else, because when the BIOS goes wrong it's very upsetting. I know from experience, the laptop is finished until you recover the BIOS. I recovered mine and the sense of refief was great.

@ Gibber

I would do an internet search on the message, quote,
"ROM file ROMID is not compatible with existing BIOS ROMID".
See what turns up.

Really though, unless you need the update for something, just forget it and don't worry. Flashing BIOS is a risk, and you shouldn't really do it unless desperately needed.

I had a crazy flash on a PC once, which went into a re-booting loop. Luckily I managed to flash back to the previous BIOS between reboots, and rescued the PC.

Maybe the next update will work.

I don't know the answer, but I would try resetting the BIOS defaults.

It's usually in the last column of settings, in the same menu as 'quit and save' etc, and it's a one minute job.

(Maybe re-install the video drivers if you have time before shutdown, since they are linked to temp monitoring. It's not neccessarily linked to the GPU though is it?)

@ MYACER2012,

If you have updated your laptop system BIOS, and the laptop has not started since the update, then it has gone wrong.

A 'bad flash' will cause a laptop motherboard to not boot; and no power is common.

Therefor I don't understand what you said about you have charged a mobile phone from the USB on you Acer One. I assume that is what you meant; that you had the charger in, the laptop won't start, and you phone charged through the USB. If so then that is news.

As far as I understand a bad flash stops everything. The solution is to replace the BIOS chip on the motherboard. BIOS chips are in good supply on eBay.

The chip is very small though. Be very careful. Or get an expert. Really it may be less trouble to find a replacement motherboard.

Also, get a second opinion, besides mine, because I may be wrong. I don't fully understand your post, as your English is difficult to understand. I hope I've understood you, and good luck.

Generally you would try a crisis recovery, but if you have no power that does not work. Sorry.

U6b36ef.

Last thought: try booting, or switching on with the hard disc and the RAM removed. Take them out a few times and put them back in, and keep trying to boot, between removing and after replacing. That does work in some circumstances.
Also try; pull out power and battery. Hold the power button in for one minute, and then try a boot.
These are fixes for power issues.

ok, so i got home from work today, eager to play one of my favorite games.
I started and my laptop just turned itself off. So i investigated. i got a hardware monitoring program, and i noticed that my GPU temperature was slowing increasing.

upon further investigation i noticed that the cooling fan wasn't spinning either.

This is where it get weird how ever..

The cooling fan will run and work perfectly, keeping my GPU cool while i am in start up or the bios. But as soon as the laptop loads windows, it just stops running, and doesn't start again allowing the GPU to heat up (surprisingly the CPU temperature remains rather normal considering the GPU and CPU share the same cooling fan).

The fan settings in windows are set to active, and i am running windows 7. This problem has only just started to occur.

Does anybody have any idea's as to what is happening and how i might fix this?

Lars.

My wife dropped my Aspire 6920g, damaging the DVD RW drive in the process.

I have bought a replacement drive quite cheaply from ebay, but am now struggling to find out how to remove the old one. I've googled and youtubed to no avail.

Has anyone done this before, or can opint me int he right direction?

I have an old T135 desktop with onboard graphics only. The HD failed and I have rebuilt from scratch except I cannot get the graphics drivers to install.

On the official site there appear to be 2 versions for my model the NVIDIA and the ATI. I have tried both and the installer fails with a message stating something like - no comaptible hardware or software is detected.

Same exact problem. I have bought 3 different batteries for my 8930g. None will charge. My original battery still works ok, but discharges in about 15 minutes. Why did Acer put in a circuit that will not charge replacement batteries? Why will they not address this issue?

According to Intels website the Atom N570 is supporting 4GB ram.
I have a - Aspire One Happy2 - N57Ch2b Atom N570 1.66Ghz

According to this youtube video, one viewer claims he has done a 4gb upgrade.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqQ3kdtUNFc

What memory should I use for upgrading to 4gb?

Following are suggestions from forums that I found around the net:
Corsair CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9 4GB 1X4GB DDR3-1333 CL9-9-9-24 204PIN SODIMM Memory?
Kingston 4 GB SODIMM (Kingston KVR1066D3S7/4G)?

But no secondary confirmation that it works.
Or if there is a BIOS limitation to it.

##//STOP THE PRESS//##

I know this problem. It is not actually the GPU that is downclocking. Prove it by having GPU-Z running in the background. Play your game and when you downclock, minimise your game and see the GPU is still running at full clocks.

Otherwise trust me and do the following, for all 6920/30/35 and 8920/30/35. You see it is the CPU that is downclocking.

Download a free tiny app called "Throttlestop". (Softpedia have it.) Extract the app to a new folder. Also when you do there is a tiny warning message, but don't worry. When you have the Throttlestop app open and running, tick -'Chipset Clock Mod' at 100%. Save the new setting, AND GAME. (All is done.)

You see there is a flaw somewhere in the Acer's temp monitoring. Some monitors read a 5'C variance compared to others. (Try speedfan and others.) When the CPU goes above I think 50'C, the CPU throttles.

To be sure running the app is fine, try it, and monitor your temps, and see that allthough you are preventing your CPU throttling, it is not overheating. Generally these laptops barely make 60'c in gaming anyway, at full power and push.

Anyway if you have the Throttlestop app extracted in a folder on your desktop, then you can open the folder everytime you go to game. Simply click the throttlestop.exe, and game. Works everytime.

U6b36ef

(Have to say, it's interesting you found a solution in the Acer site driver.)

I am even wondering if there is a chance it might help with the 8600M GT and the 9500M GS cards.

Yeah it must be the way the different BIOS's on the laptops assign hardware reserve. Seriously don't worry, 3GB on Acer is norm.

Hey brath23,

I noticed you said you installed the Realtech drivers, but did you download from the Realtech, or Acer. Go with the Acer ones if not.

Or you might have the speaker configuration set up to stereo, in the Acer HD Audio Manager. (You'd need the Acer driver for that, I guess.) Anyway I think the speaker config is default as 5.1 after installation.

Look in 'control panel', Acer HD Audio Manager, first tab for 'speaker config', then the 'speaker config' dropdown.

I'm working on an Acer Aspire 5520 laptop that is out of warranty for a non-profit organization. It has a strange power on problem that I have no idea where to start working on. I'm at a complete loss and need some help. Here's the problem...

If the laptop is powered off for more than 6 hours it will not power on with the AC adapter plugged in. If I unplug the AC adapter from the laptop, it will power up on battery power. When it is turned on it will run fine on either battery or AC adapter. When it's powered off the battery light is lit, but when I press the power button, the battery light goes out. I unplug the AC adapter and the laptop will power on from the battery and the battery light will come back on. But this will only happen if the laptop is powered off for more than 6 hours, less than that it will power on fine.

I've tried removing the battery and powering on with just the AC adapter and it will not power on. I've tried removing the AC adapter and battery and holding the power button for 1 minute, did not solve the problem. I was having this problem before I did a full factory restore of the laptop and am still having after doing a factory restore. I sent an e-mail to Acer's technical support looking for suggestions and all they told me was to reset the BIOS to the default settings. I tried that and am now waiting for 6 hours to see if that solves it. I'm thinking it won't make a difference. I ran virus scans and Malware Bytes, both came up clean.

I'm at a loss of what to try next. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

I have Acer Aspire 6930g. I had screen problems and sent it for repair but due to cost issues, brought it back without repair. But to my surprise the screen works perfectly well (apparently Inverter and LCD cable were required to be replaced). As soon as I started the laptop, I found that there is no internet connectivity via the wireless, though the Ethernet cable connects me to Internet. When I press the wireless connection key the display reads "NO DEVICE". However the Network card in the hardware reads "device is working" no conflicts. I re-configured the router, turned off and on both the laptop and router, disconnected the device and reinstalled it, updated the drivers, but still it is not working. Please help.
