On other websites for motherboards and laptops I've owned, the vendor has described what the updates in the BIOS did on a functional level. For instance, an HP bios update on my wife's older laptop enabled use of 4 GB sticks of ram. Does anyone know of a place for pure BIOS discussions? The acer website is generally lacking in any detail. I'm specifically looking for 7736z info.

This past weekend I bought my wife an Aspire 1 D257. After charging the battery, I turned it on, noted that the battery was 100%, unplugged it, and gave it to the wife to use. In less than 2 hrs the battery was dead. What? No way I say. But true.

The reviews I read on the D257 indicated up to 8 hours of battery life. I would have been happy with 4 hrs, but can't handle less than 2 hours.

Solution? I would like to find an extended life battery (i.e. 6 cell) for the D257, but so far I am unable to find a source.

HELP ME PLEASE! Cry for assistance before I have to take it back to Walmart for my money back.

On Tuesday, Acer chairman JT Wang warned the opposition that his company has moved away from purely defending its position in the market as seen in 2011. Instead, Acer is now in full attack position and poised to deal a vicious blow from four specific angles: ultrabooks, netbooks, tablets and smartphones. The chairman made his virtual war cry during Acer's ceremony for the Lunar New Year.

Acer's strongest blow, according to JT Wang, will be on the ultrabook front. The company will reportedly launch four new models in 2Q12 alone, and then an additional, unspecified number of ultrabooks sporting a tasty pricetag of $699 to $799 USD the following quarter. Acer president Jim Wong added that the company will adopt a passive strategy over pricing, that going forward, user experience and demand will become the major selling points rather than a competitive price tag.

In the tablet sector, Acer plans to steer clear of the high-end and low-end markets ruled by Apple's iPad and Amazon's Kindle Fire respectively. Instead, Acer will attack via the mid-range avenue priced between $299 and $499 USD. Currently this specific market has an estimated shipment scale of around 10 to 20 million units, but that may change once Apple reportedly introduces the iPad 3 which addresses both the mid-range and high-end markets.

As for Acer's netbook assault, the company assumes that developed countries will sway towards the ultrabook form factor. However the shipment volume of netbooks in emerging countries is still growing, allowing Acer to maintain its 45-percent worldwide market share. But eventually that will come to an end, as the netbook and ultrabook sectors are expected to merge into one happy segment within the next 18 to 24 months.

Tuesday’s report did not offer details surrounding Acer's smartphone assault, so stay tuned.

@ Gibber

I would do an internet search on the message, quote,
"ROM file ROMID is not compatible with existing BIOS ROMID".
See what turns up.

Really though, unless you need the update for something, just forget it and don't worry. Flashing BIOS is a risk, and you shouldn't really do it unless desperately needed.

I had a crazy flash on a PC once, which went into a re-booting loop. Luckily I managed to flash back to the previous BIOS between reboots, and rescued the PC.

Maybe the next update will work.

Same exact problem. I have bought 3 different batteries for my 8930g. None will charge. My original battery still works ok, but discharges in about 15 minutes. Why did Acer put in a circuit that will not charge replacement batteries? Why will they not address this issue?

Hi to everyone.

I have been reading reviews over months to choose the best laptop. nothing strike me on the CES2012 but I have already kind of leaned to the ICONIA-6120.

in most amazon reviews they issue about how to lower touchscreen stop functioning relative fast.

can anyone share it's experience with this model.

According to Intels website the Atom N570 is supporting 4GB ram.
I have a - Aspire One Happy2 - N57Ch2b Atom N570 1.66Ghz

According to this youtube video, one viewer claims he has done a 4gb upgrade.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqQ3kdtUNFc

What memory should I use for upgrading to 4gb?

Following are suggestions from forums that I found around the net:
Corsair CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9 4GB 1X4GB DDR3-1333 CL9-9-9-24 204PIN SODIMM Memory?
Kingston 4 GB SODIMM (Kingston KVR1066D3S7/4G)?

But no secondary confirmation that it works.
Or if there is a BIOS limitation to it.

Hey brath23,

I noticed you said you installed the Realtech drivers, but did you download from the Realtech, or Acer. Go with the Acer ones if not.

Or you might have the speaker configuration set up to stereo, in the Acer HD Audio Manager. (You'd need the Acer driver for that, I guess.) Anyway I think the speaker config is default as 5.1 after installation.

Look in 'control panel', Acer HD Audio Manager, first tab for 'speaker config', then the 'speaker config' dropdown.

I'm working on an Acer Aspire 5520 laptop that is out of warranty for a non-profit organization. It has a strange power on problem that I have no idea where to start working on. I'm at a complete loss and need some help. Here's the problem...

If the laptop is powered off for more than 6 hours it will not power on with the AC adapter plugged in. If I unplug the AC adapter from the laptop, it will power up on battery power. When it is turned on it will run fine on either battery or AC adapter. When it's powered off the battery light is lit, but when I press the power button, the battery light goes out. I unplug the AC adapter and the laptop will power on from the battery and the battery light will come back on. But this will only happen if the laptop is powered off for more than 6 hours, less than that it will power on fine.

I've tried removing the battery and powering on with just the AC adapter and it will not power on. I've tried removing the AC adapter and battery and holding the power button for 1 minute, did not solve the problem. I was having this problem before I did a full factory restore of the laptop and am still having after doing a factory restore. I sent an e-mail to Acer's technical support looking for suggestions and all they told me was to reset the BIOS to the default settings. I tried that and am now waiting for 6 hours to see if that solves it. I'm thinking it won't make a difference. I ran virus scans and Malware Bytes, both came up clean.

I'm at a loss of what to try next. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

I have tried relentlessly using the drivers supplied via the acer support website but to no avail. part of the issue i am having with the wireless is that acers website lists 2 different drivers for this model, and without actually taking the machine apart, i have failed to find out which device driver i should be concentrating on! (i dont want to have to resort to taking the thing apart, but guess i will have to if no one knows!) any suggestions to which is the one correct wireless drive or any solutions to getting the ethernet working - the driver installation just fails half way through with no explaination as to why =( any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello everyone,

I recently recieved a Acer - Travelmate 2200 from my friend. When i press the power on button on the travelmate , youll hear the fans spin but there's a black screen. After that it tries several times to power on, after 7-8? times it start up and loads the bios screen. Laptop works fine after that part, you guys have any idea what the cause could be? Myself was thinking about bad memory.

Hi
I have an Acer 5739G that have stopped working. Symptoms are as follow: Laptop goes through the post process, checks the memory and drives etc but does not boot from any device. I have tried replacing memory, replacing hard drive, trying booting from USB drive and more.
I am expecting that the BIOS got corrupted and I was wondering how to update bios in my case? I obviously cannot use WinFlash tool from ACER as I cannot boot to windows or even DOS.
I know that there is an option to flash BIOS straight away from USB key using FN+ESC+POWER because I used this option with Aspire One. Also I tried booting my laptop with BIOS on USB Drive and I got activity. I was using original files from the archive of BIOS 3310 downloaded from ACER site.
I remember that in case of Aspire ONE those files had to be renamed, maybe I have to rename them in my case?

And at last if someone meet same issue that I have, maybe there is an other solution? I would like to avoid replacing the motherboard as it is expensive job even that I can do it myself.

Hi,
To increase your battery life follow this instruction-

1. Ship shape with a defrag- The faster your hard drive does its work – less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery. Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly.

2. Kill the resource gobblers- End the background processes that are not vital. Monitor the resource usage through a “˜Ctrl-Alt-Del’ which brings up the Windows Task Manager (in Windows). If you’re not on the internet, it is safe to shut down the immediate non-essential programs running in the taskbar like the antivirus and the firewall. Weed out unnecessary programs running as start-ups by launching the System Configuration Utility from Run ““ Msconfig ““ Tab: Startup. Uncheck the programs which you don’t want to launch and reboot the computer once.

3. Dim your screen – Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen. Some
even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. Cut them down to the lowest
level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.

4. Pause the scheduled tasks- It may be a defrag or a virus scan, but make sure it is
scheduled for a time when you are near a power outlet. If not then nix them for the moment.

5. Unplug external devices-USB devices are the biggest drainers of battery power. Unplug all external devices like an external mouse, PC cards, Wi-Fi, external speakers, Bluetooth and even an attached iPod.

6. Empty the CD/DVD Drives- Even if you don’t intend to use it, don’t leave any CD/DVDs as
leftovers in the drives. A spinning drive sucks battery power like a sponge.

7. Add more RAM - This will allow you to process more with the memory your laptop has,
rather than relying on virtual memory. Virtual memory results in hard drive use, and is much less power efficient. Note that adding more RAM will consume more energy, so this is most applicable if you do need to run memory intensive programs which actually require heavy usage of virtual memory.

8. Go local- Desist using the DVD/external drives while running on batteries. Shift the
content to the hard drive or run using (free) virtual drives like Pismo File Mount or even
Microsoft’s Virtual CD ROM Control Panel.

9. Kill the sounds- Mute the speakers and try avoiding the use of multimedia software to
maximize the battery life. Installed sound schemes also drain a battery perceptibly.

10. Visit Power Options- Get familiar with power management through the “˜Power Options’
applet in the Control Panel. Both XP and Vista come with advanced power management features which shut off components like the monitor and/or the hard drive after specified intervals. This again depends on the chosen “˜Power Schemes’ (for XP) in the same applet. For instance in XP, “˜Max Battery’ under Power Schemes can be selected for maximum battery optimization.

11. Hibernate is better than Sleep-In the Stand By mode (or sleep mode), the computer turns of the hard drive and the display but memory remains active while the CPU slows down. This draws on the battery. In contrast, hibernation mode is better because the computer saves the current state and shuts itself down completely thus saving power.

12. Update software and drivers-This sounds a bit incongruous but then newer drivers and
software are often designed to be more efficient (and hopefully less resource hungry).

Regards,
Josef,

I have the same problem trying to replace the battery. I tried 3 batteries and #1 would not charge or start up the PC. Number 2 reported no battery found and no display, #3 reports no battery found , but seems to run the PC (with out the charger.) Has anyone found the answer to this problem? I have tried all the tricks posted. Aspire 8930. Bob.

Hello everybody , i am so glad i find and join this great site.I am looking for some help with my Acer 7520G which for about 3 months now has been giving me problems and recently has quit completely to work.
A quick journal of failure 7520g:
1)playing COD and similar games i noticed lots of lags, changed drivers but the problems remained and gradually got worst.I OC the 8600m gs and finally i had to remove the nvidia drivers because the screen in win7 was locking up.It worked with the standard vga drivers just as a laptop for internet access, youtube etc.
2)Cooked the Gpu worked for a month then back to standard vga
3)acer logo boots ,before win7 boots the cpu restars again and again...
4)the laptop opens the hdd is heard but there is the endless cycle of rebooting and switching off by it self
5)Hot aired the nvidia chipset on the mobo yestarday, didnt work

So i am having a plan in my mind, keep caddy and slowly keep upgrading the whole system.
A)Motherboard -Has anyone buy one from ebay? warnings, advices welcomed!
B)whats the best GPU mxm type II (money aside). Is the ati 4670 still considered the best gaming card i can put inside?will it work with the 7520g?What could i do to make it perform
C)CPU i want to try the TL-68 .does the 1.33 bios work with this?Is there a modded one?
D)Can i exceed the 4GB limits of ram?
With rough calculations i estimate about 450-500 euros for new M/B,CPU,GPU.
How good you think this will work on the new games such as COD-mw3...

I know too many questions.have already have gone through many threads, i am looking for a more condensed theadon experimenting/upgrading 7520G!

Thank you all!
