Please write back if you are still stuck.

The most important thing is you have power, so you can recover.

Also anyone else, because when the BIOS goes wrong it's very upsetting. I know from experience, the laptop is finished until you recover the BIOS. I recovered mine and the sense of refief was great.

Yeah it must be the way the different BIOS's on the laptops assign hardware reserve. Seriously don't worry, 3GB on Acer is norm.

Look at stuff like Sisoft Sandra, and CPU-Z to see all your ram in place.

Hey brath23,

I noticed you said you installed the Realtech drivers, but did you download from the Realtech, or Acer. Go with the Acer ones if not.

Or you might have the speaker configuration set up to stereo, in the Acer HD Audio Manager. (You'd need the Acer driver for that, I guess.) Anyway I think the speaker config is default as 5.1 after installation.

Look in 'control panel', Acer HD Audio Manager, first tab for 'speaker config', then the 'speaker config' dropdown.

Neither of you have said if your BD drives can read standard definition discs, and cd's.

I'd check that.
Second, have you the Blu-Ray DVD decoder installed.

I think I vaguely recall some users lost use of their BD drives after upgrading to Win 7. It should all be resolvable though, given the right treatment. Otherwise your drives may have become faulty, sorry.

I have had this problem as well, with it also dieing after 18 months. I have done some experiments on the this to eek out the screen, someone might fine my results useful in tracking down the problem.

First off, the LCD display, on mine at least, is working, if you get a torch and shine it at the screen, you should see the image of your desktop. The issue is the back-light. There appear to be 2 used the first to quickly bring up a visible image on the screen and provide a constant image to the user, the second one is to provide the brightness. I discovered this by trying to change the screen brightness when just the initial fading light comes on and getting no response. The main light, fn + f6, is the one used to provide the viewing light, this is the main tube and the one where I think the bulk of the problems comes from. When this first happened I could get it to work using the fn + f6 trick but after a while even that stopped working and I could not work out why as the fn + f6 option had worked perfectly before. This was in winter and it was rather chilly. I then did some research into what types of bulbs are used and discovered that they are the same as florescent strip lights. With the cold making the fn + f6 useless I thought to try heating the tube knowing that florescent tubes don't like cold starts. I used a hair dryer and pointed it at the bottom right of the screen bezel and with a couple of fn + f6 I had a bright screen after about 60 seconds of heating that area. I have used this process for over a year, but now it looks like my tube has finally given up the ghost. I get some flickering but that is all.

This is my own personal experience and the issue might differ from machine to machine.

For some lucky people, where they can see the boot sequence, but it dies at login or when windows has loaded, then it is more than likely a problem with the drivers, for those where it dies during boot, mine goes dead before the end of POST, then it is not a driver issue as the drivers are only loaded when windows loads. So far I have tried all the software fixes mentioned and a few that haven't been, and I have not found a solution to the problem. it is not a virus, it is not a problem with windows, I have done clean installs of Vista, Windows 7, Windows XP, Umbuntu, Red Hat, DOS 6.22 and OSX 10.6 to ensure that it was not an operating system error. I have installed official and modified drivers. I have flashed my BIOS to the latest version and every version in between. I have also replaced the power brick in case it was an external power issue.

From my experiments I am coming to the following conclusions:

1) the back-lights that they put in these are utter rubbish and must be the cheapest ones they can get their hands on.
2) there might be a power supply issue. Possible not enough power is getting to the tube to start it correctly.
3) I am not entirely sure how to go about fixing this as i don't know exactly where the problem lies. If what I suspect is true then it is a combination of power and rubbish tubes.

Replacing the tubes is not a problem, there are plenty of options for that, it is the power that is going to be the devil to track down. I will strip down my laptop at some point and do a full diagnostic and will post my findings here. I don't know when I will do this at I use my machine for work and cant afford to take it offline at the moment.

I hope this helps.

Regards Tim

@phantolino - just got this from Acer Support. Worth giving a try...

Update first to BIOS 1.16
Probably your failure is due to the fact you must run the update by right clicking on the executable and then select: "Run as administrator"

Thanks for the reply nffc, unfortunately i tried that and nothing happened. I also tried with different OS, BIOS update etc and still nothing.

It looks to me like a Wake on Keyboard feature but there is no way of disabling it, its just so frustrating and it eats up my battery!

Hello,

I recently switched from Vista to Windows 7 on my acer 8920g laptop and i noticed a wierd problem:

Whenever i shutdown from windows or even when by holding down the power button, the laptop shuts down but the power led becomes orange and blinks like when its on sleep mode. If i press any button it will boot up properly as if i have pressed the power button.

Ive searched the BIOS for any setting, and ive even tried to update it with no luck.

What do you guys think? Ill appreciate any help, its driving me crazy..

I'm having the same problem with the backlight, so I've taken the laptop apart and have just ordered a new LTN184HT01 display.

What I don't get is that accordingly to previous comments in here, Acer has chosen to replace both the display and the LCD cable?

Is the cable damaging the backlights and therefore the root of the problem?

I don't want to buy the cable unless it would be stupid not to.

Hope to hear from some of you.

@ jimcoun

You need to do a Phoenix crisis (BIOS) recovery. (I checked, and the 8920 is Phoenix BIOS.) You'll have to do an internet search about it, and for the files.

I can't offer anymore information to you, but it will work: I'm sure.

The screen blacking out does not seem to be related to any of the answers here so far. I had the same problem. Fn F6 seems to turn the screen on...but what caused it to fail in the first place...looks like either a virus hit the Nvidia drivers, or the Nvidia drivers just decided to pack up.

I went to Nvidia and installed new drivers for my 8920 and so far so good.

Try this first before you start to shell out at sh!t-load of cash.

If you still have problems...keep pressing Fn F6 till the screen stabilizes...it will after 20 or so presses of Fn F6...then save all your data...and re-install your operating system from your 3 disks YOU WERE SUPPOSE TO MAKE WHEN YOU GOT THIS DAMN MACHINE...you will lose all your data but now you will have a clean machine...install your security system and update your Nvidia drivers and you should be fine.

Interestingly enough my system started to act up with blue screens right after I played one of the Google games...maybe the game has a glitch which affect Nvidia...go figure. Good luck

****- FIX FIX FIX FIX FIX FIX FIX -****

This is to fix the 2 second screen when Fn + F6 is pressed.

Ok Guys, this is actually easy to fix. I've debugged this down to the Bios. In some cases the settings in the bios on the 8920g gets slightly corrupted (note you cannot see this in the bios setup). To fix, all you have to do is to go into the bios (F2) on startup (if you have difficulty seeing the bios screens then repeatedly press Fn and F6 fast until it manages to stay on.) When in the bios, load up the bios default settings (F9 i think). Once loaded, then press F10 to save and exit. Your computer will then restart and the problem will be fixed. Someone on here suggests flashing the BIOS, (DO NOT!!!!) it's not needed and can screw up your computer if it goes wrong. The reason it fixed it for him was due to it writing the new settings back to the flash. You can thank me by sending a small paypal donation to brereton_paul (@) btinternet.com. I've just saved you all a load of hassle (and money).

Cheers. :-)

I have a Acer Aspire 8920G with Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit installed. I just bought a new 5.1 Trust speaker system but i only can get sound from front speakers. I installed the last drivers available for Windows 7 from Realtek. I configured the mic and Line-in as audio output in the HD Audio Manager, but still only front play sound in the test. The 6 speakers work perfect under Linux. I googled my problem, but i didn't find any solution for me. I hope someone can help me!!!

ok folks,

I think I have managed to solve this problem

POWER ON THE LAPTOP

whilst its booting up, you can use the FOLLOWING KEYS TO see picture on the screen:

FN + F6

Whilst its booting, also HIT F2, once your in the bios

Go to:

EXIT > LOAD SETUP DEFAULTS

EXIT SAVING CHANGES > SELECT YES

It should then reboot and ... now its working...SO FAR.

After doing this, the screen stays on, operating system loads up fine.

And I have done approx 10 restarts and also approx 5 power downs and then power on.

Hope this helps

As long as you've selected the correct video card from NVidia then you're fine. Download and install it.

It could be background programs/services using up your resources.

As well ensure you have the latest video card driver for your card and that you have all that Windows is up to date.

As well ensure that your anti-virus solution is not running a scan/task in the background.

Use the Alt-F10 key combination to use the recovery partition on the Hard drive itself. As well BIOS revisions shouldn't mess with recovery disks. Be sure to contact Acer right away if this doesn't help as it just came back from them.

The OS not found error either means a corrupted unbootable OS or a dead HDD.

Hey Fellas, New to the forum. I just got my Aspire 8920G back from warranty, the repairs were as follows, DC-IN Cable, Power Button Board, and MEM 2GB DDR2 667 SO-DIMM M470T5663QZ3-CE6 LF SAMSUNG, and they also update the BIOS, all my recovery disks are from the old BIOS... does that make a difference? What I am encountering is, when i try to install a copy of windows vista, or otherwise the recovery disks, I get a error saying restore failed, reason 0xa0000000... Its like it isn't reading my IDE0 hard drive. I have tried everything I can possibly think of, any suggestions?
thanks in advance!

I am also about to install a 2nd hard drive in my 8920G, do I just need a sata hard drive only?

I have seen some threads on the 6920 needing adapters, brackets and cover doors.

Do I need anything other than the drive for the 8920?

Many thanks

Hello gazgits,

We've had this issue before and we concluded that the LCD is faulty. It would be best to keep using the external screen if you want to limit costs.

See:
http://www.theacerguy.com/forum/topic/lcd-display-on-8920g

Here for the manual:
http://tim.id.au/laptops/acer/aspire%208920.pdf

And you are right : To remove the screen will be one of the most challanging experiences ever =)

I have previously read on this forum about these screens failing. The same has now happened to mine. Due to being out of warranty im looking at repairing myself. My question is how can i confirm which part is defective.

Symptom: Nothing displayed on the screen however laptop works fine if plugged into external monitor.

I can see the screen lighting up on power on and if pressing Fn F6.

So is there anyway i can prove that the display is ok and it is a damaged cable that is cauing the problem.

Secondly does any one know of a guide for removing the screen on this laptop as it is not the easiest due to some of the screws located on the screen.

Thanks in advance

Uses the same LCD & Invertor as the 8930G (invertor failed on mine after 13 months). Replaced it myself which was a complete pain as the whole machine needed to basically be stripped to remove LCD bezel. Cost me £30 for the invertor off of Ebay. LCD Panel from ebay was going to cost £129 inc delivery (for a brand new panel).
