Hi all,

I've had my 6920g for over three years now and I've begun having screen issues. The screen turns off when it is at certain angles. Only when the screen is at approx 45degrees or less will it work, and when its fully opened, anything inbetween and the screen turns off. Is anyone else having this problem and any suggestions, solutions? Should i be expecting the end to my dear 6920g? :(

Hi, Im really hoping someone can help me. Im not having very much luck of late with my acer aspire 4010t. It is currently at a pc shop where I have been informed it will cost £150.00 to fix, minimum, and Im concerned I have no way of knowing whether this is a decent fair price?

The laptop goes on, begins to start up then the screen goes blank and does not return. Everything else seems to work.

Im have been told the issue is that I need a replacement screen or screen connection replaced?

The laptop is only 18 months old, obviously out of warranty (it was returned in warrenty for a month to have the mother board replaced). I cannot afford any repairs really at the moment and just want to make sure that Im not paying for something I dont need to?

If anyone has any knowledge of this issue or ways it can be rectified and costs that would be a great help

Many Thanks

Hi there everyone.

I have had this Acer Aspire 7535, for 18 months, using it almost every day. I'm running Windows 7 (64bit), and the only problem I've had has been related to the battery losing it's charge after 30 minutes.

Not done any hardware upgrades - never needed to!

However, last night while watching a DVD, (possibly as the laptop when to Hibernate), the screen suddenly went black.

At that point the whole computer became unresponsive:
I couldn't power down or restart by holding the power button.
Caps and number lock wouldn't turn on or off.
DVD drive would open, and when I closed it the disk span for a bit.

After removing the battery and reinserting, all that happens is the blue power light comes on, fans start, but NOTHING else. No boot, nothing on the screen...

After reading around I've seen several comments blaming the graphics card. When I plug in an external display, there's nothing more than a black screen.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

Post title sums up the problem but the detail is:
The backlight on my 6920g only works intermittently. When the initial Acer boot-up screen is shown the screen is fully lit but afterwards it can go off at any point from then onwards. The longest the screen has stayed on is 30 minutes, but usually it goes off after less than a minute.
Shining a light on the screen shows there is an image being displayed.
Pressing Fn + F6 and then any key can restore the backlight from anything from 1 to 10 seconds before it goes off again, although this does not always work.
I have used the HDMI output to use my television as a screen and that works fine, although that's obviously not an ideal solution.
The inverter has been replaced as a attempt to solve this problem.
While I am running Vista Home Premium normally, attempts to run Ubuntu and OpenSUSE from memory sticks and CDs haven't made any difference.
Prior to this problem the screen was fine, and I hadn't performed any recent updates. I used the laptop in the morning, switched it off for about 6 hours and when I turned it back on the screen no longer worked.

Hope somebody can help as I'm at my wits end, and I really can't afford a replacement right now.

Hope this post isn't too long :P

My laptop has suddenly developed a problem similar to a screen saver. The screen goes black after a period between 1 and 10 secs, but everything carries on running. I've found I can get the screen back with fn+f6, but then it blanks again. It's not a Windows issue because it also happens in Ubuntu and while booting. It can't be an LCD or graphics card issue if a key press temporarily fixes it.

Really hoping someone has a suggestion, because I've run out!

Hi Milleniumaire,

Finally got round to getting Acer to fix the broken laptop I had (dedicated graphics failed, onboard fine). It was still in guarantee. As with the other one, they replaced the whole motherboard (and I assume graphics card as well, but I actually don't know). Definitely a new mobo as now has metal only arms to hold the ram. Unfortunately I guess that still doesn't fully answer your question as to whether it is mobo or graphics card. But they were very quick (pciked up by courier early eve, returned Thursday first thing) so I guess they must be aware this is a common fault with this particular model.

Sorry if again this isn't much help!

Hi, i have a acer 6930g laptop, however i have been experiencing problems with my display.
I have, what i believe to be an intermittent fault, this fault consists of purple horizontal lines appearing across the screen.

More recently I have noticed the screen shakes up and down too, could this be a connection issue?

I recently sent it back to acer regarding the faulty screen and also the collar around the AC adaptor socket had come off, this was deemed malicious by acer and decided to charge me £60 for what was a 87p unit whilst in warranty. I was disgusted and did not proceed with the repair, however I do not believe they even looked at the screen issue.

if anyone has had a similar problem or knows of a solution, I look forward to your reply.

Thanks.

Hi,

My Acer A150 the other day stop charging it's battery. I have to use a friends to charge the battery to use it! I have flashed the Bios but with no luck. When you plug in the charger the battery light doesn't light.

So i have brought a new motherboard but now the computer does not recognise the the screen. It does work but the resolution is all messed up. For example the bios screen doesn't fill the whole screen so it repeats it self. (expect form the screen it works fine)

So i need one of two fixes! Either does any one know how to fix the old motherboard or does any one know how to fix the screen issue?

Any help would be great.

Cheers

Yes, if you're not using it for gaming there really is little or no difference, which is why I can wait till the spring. But I can understand you wanting it all tickety boo.

Not sure what happened with the repair shop in the end, but maybe it would end up cheaper buying a replacement video card from ebay for £50 and seeing if they'd agree to fit it for free in recompense. I'm pretty sure that would fix it, it may need some jiggery pokery with the display driver (http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/387819-acer-8935g-using-wrong-display-adapter-13.html) but I'm pretty convinced that would fix it. Alternative might be to see if acer would agree to come to an agreement to do it, if you have no faith left in your local place, which it sounds like they certainly haven't earned!...

Hi conradish,

No worries and thanks for letting me know.

I've been using the notepad with the onboard graphics and I must confess I haven't found anything that it can't do with the ATI graphics card. I don't use it for gaming and even when playing blu-ray and watching TV through Windows Media player, it seems to run okay.

I'm now undecided if I want to pay Acer to repair it although I would obviously rather have a fully working machine.

Went to collect my notepad from the PC repair shop yesterday and yet again it was clear they hadn't repaired it although he thought he had! Spent 1.5 hours showing him the problem, with him playing around trying to get it to work, all to no avail (as I expected).

Finally agreed I would wait to see what conradish's experience was with Acer, so hopefully conradish will report back when his machine has been repaired. It would be really useful to know what they do to repair it so I can get a price from Acer upfront before sending it off.

Haven't got any of my £145 back from the PC repair shop yet, but I will do when I get confirmation from Acer that there is a hard ware problem.

I'm reluctant to send it off before Christmas knowing that the courier companies and Royal Mail are having problems so I'll wait until the New Year, hopefully conradish will have got his back then, assuming it has been sent off.

Hi conradish,

I wonder if you could do me a favour. As you have the same model Acer Aspire as me, would you please confirm that both video adapters are ALWAYS enabled when the ATI card is being used. I believe this is the High power GPU setting.

However, when the low power setting is selected only the Intel adapter shows.

In either case (low or high power) the screen resolution is at 1910 x 1080 and this is the native resolution for the monitor.

Given that the screen looks the same in either mode are there any ways to show which video card is being used? I can only think of listing the adapters and maybe looking at the video scores for the Windows experience index.

Thanks.

now with this screen my problem is that every other vertical line(every 2nd as far as i can tell) of pixels is white making the screen virtually (white) and unusuable. The new screen is full hd (1920x1080)as was the original.

does anyone have any idea whats causing this or how to fix it?

thanks in advance for your help

Thanks for the link, it's interesting to know that others are having the same problem. It makes me feel like I'm the member of an exclusive (or maybe not so exclusive) club ;-)

Called the repair shop today and they asked for it back to look again. I was reluctant to waste even more time but have agreed to take it in on Saturday so I can explain to them what they think they have repaired. I thought I should give them a 2nd chance before demanding my money back, although I feel a little sorry for them as they have spent time attempting to repair the notepad, but at the end of the day I'm not prepared to hand over money for nothing.

I would be interested to know how you get on with your repair by Acer.

Hmmm, grim turn of events. Its always so disappointing when people are out of their depth and think they've fixed something they clearly haven't, and instead needlessly cause extra damage. plus you are none the wiser as to whether it is the card, interface or motherboard that is to blame. It sounds like they've just loaded some drivers that while being installed have caused the onboard graphics to be used instead giving them the impression they've fixed something. They really shouldn't have assumed that it was fixed, and they also really should have swapped out the ati card as part of the diagnosis procedure.

Glad the configurable graphics option is there now. At least you can use the computer for now (you could try a bluray and see if it can cope just using the onboard graphics, but its pretty likely it won't be smooth enough I think. Plus ideally you'll want it all working as it should be.

A few others have reported the same/similar problem too: http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/104954-acer-aspire-8935g-904g50bn.html It might be worth posting there aell. I'm convinced there is a problem here especially with the quad core version (maybe it uses a different batch of ati cards)

If its of any help, I'll be contacting Acer first thing next week regarding the failure I have (exactly same, including occasional flickering, though luckily I'm still inside warranty). Last time they fixed it (on a duplicate computer, and slightly different fault; addditonal stuff had failed) they were unclear about how it was resolved, this time I'll try and find out more details and post back, guess it would be a 2 week turnaround or therabouts...so could stretch into new year..

Sorry its not gone well though.

Got my notepad back from the repair shop today. They charged me £145 for the repair, which was labour + vat.

The first thing I noticed when I got it out of the bag was scratches on the casing. It was in pristine condition when I took it in and I told them this and asked them to be extra careful. The casing was replaced about 4 month ago under warranty by Acer due to them damaging it when returning it after a hard drive replacement.

The "engineers report" as they called it said three things:
Reseated Graphics chip on board
Reinstalled device software
TESTED

I wasn't sure what device software they had re-installed as there shouldn't have been any need to do this. When I turned it on and booted into windows the screen was showing a resolution of 1024 x 768, not the Full HD 1920 x 1080 that I was used to. When I tried to change the resolution, the maximum available was 1280 x 1040. Clearly this wasn't correct!

I checked the device manager and it showed the expected graphics adapters:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670
Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

However, the Mobile Intel Chipset had been disabled. Both adapters showed the ATI Technology Inc 16/7/09 8.60.4.0 driver version.

As the screen resolution wasn't correct I enabled the Mobile Intel Chipset and as expected the screen went blank! I plugged it into my monitor and it worked okay.

I then found an option called Configure Switchable Graphics when I right click on the desktop. This looks to be what you were talking about when you mentioned the green button. It gave me two options; High Performace GPU or Power saving GPU. When switched to Power saving, the screen works and shows a 1920 x 1080 resolution image, however it is using the Mobile Intel Chipset for the graphics adapter. The ATI adapter isn't shown.

When switched to Performance GPU the screen doesn't work (I have to use a separate monitor) and the maximum resolution is showing 1280 x 1024. Both adapters are showing!

If I boot into Windows Vista, which they don't appear to have touched, I still get the original problem i.e. the image disappears after booting into the Vista O/S.

So, it seems to be in a worse state now than it was when I took it to them. I'm not sure what they have done to affect the resolution when using the ATI adapter. I'm reluctant to start re-installing drivers until I have taken it back and shown them that they haven't actually fixed anything and asked for my money back.

I'm resigned to the fact I'm going to have to send it off to Acer.

Hi conradish,

Despite being a little unreliable and taking their time, the repair shop believe the problem is with the connection of the ATI graphics card with the motherboard. They have tried to re-seat it and it has improved a little, but they say the screen is now flickering. They tell me they will continue to work on it and seem to think it is repairable without any additional parts.

If this is the solution then it is clear to me the problem is due to shoddy manufacturing, a little like the PS3 YLOD issue, caused by dry solder joints. Of course Sony would never admit to this and I suspect Acer will be the same.

Hey guys! Totally forgot I posted this!

Yes, I'm still having touch-screen issues. Lately they had been worse than ever, the mouse 'jumping' to the top and staying there until I rebooted. I had to disable this.

Interestingly... a screen clean fixed this. I guess my screen was mucky and it was breaking the IR field.

However I still have a dead zone.

Watching a YouTube video for an Acer laptop which uses the same optic Infa-Red 'touch screen' hardware. Apparently the hardware connector belt cable might be loose or dirty, and all you need to do is take it out, give it a clean, and put it back in firmly.

Downside; I haven't got a bleedin' clue how to take my computer apart. The front panel is held on by demon magic, and won't give way any further than half-way down. No screws or anything. My computer is out of warranty, and I'm saving up for a laptop now; since I missed the portability; so I'm willing to break my computer apart to figure out if it's fixable.

So I'm putting it down to messy hard-ware assembly. Which is fair enough, to some degree; but they could have done some quality control before shipping. If anyone has any ideas on how to take the damn front cover off; drop me a line!

I don't have a AAO Linux variant kicking around so I can't give you step by step instructions. However a quick google search should yield you some very quick results. If it helps at all the version of Linux Acer used was Linpus Linux.

Not sure why the switchable graphics wouldn't work in the original vista install. Thats maybe a little odd.

But as for graphics card. Yes you can buy separately, certainly many times cheaper and much more variety on ebay, just search "ati mobility". simliar cards range from £50. Beware though that even if you narrow it down to being a fault only present when using the ati card, it doesn't mean the fault has to be on the card itself. It could be the motherboard interface to the card, or other components in the link. Switching the card would make that obvious though.

Be good to know how you get on. Yet to contact Acer on my latest failure, just working with the onbaord graphics till it can be sent back. I'd agree its very annoying when things fail just outside of warranty though and usually it doesn't pay to get the extended ones. I'm not sure that you have to just rely on the warranty alone though. If a product doesn't last as long as reasonably expected, you may still have recourse, but obviously you need to dedicate some time and be gritty..some helpful info here though:

Hi conradish,

Yes I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit myself as the notepad came with Vista Home 32 bit and a free upgrade to Windows 7 Home 32 bit. I fell for that marketing ploy, not realising I wouldn't be able to install Ultimate 64 bit and pay some extra, but that's my fault for not doing more research. I still don't understand why Acer supplied a 32 bit O/S on a 64 bit, high end machine! Needless to say I haven't used the pre-installed Vista or done much with it.

I did try booting into Vista and pressing the green button, as I assumed maybe a driver was missing from Windows 7. Unfortunately, it doesn't work in either O/S. I can confirm that the screen problems were identical in both Vista and Windows 7, although I noticed that Vista did display the desktop during bootup, before suddenly blanking out, whereas Windows 7 never displays the desktop as the screen goes blank after the logo.

The notepad is now at my local repair shop and I was careful to describe the investigations I had performed. He did mention the invertor but I told him I didn't think it was anything to do with the screen due to the image displaying okay to the point of the O/S starting.

They charge £28 for investigating the problem and will then give their understanding of the problem and the cost of repairing it before going ahead.

Do you know if the ATI Radeon card simply plugs into the motherboard on this model i.e. can it be replaced without replacing the whole motherboard?

I did find a way to disable the ATI card, which involved uninstalling both adapters and then restarting the notepad. I seem to recall this then installed a default Intel driver for the onboard graphics, which then worked. I may have also de-installed all the ATI software. It did cross my mind that I could use it like this, and still may depending on the price for repairing it.

I paid just under £1500 for the laptop about 15 months ago and the model is still selling for around the same price, so for the sake of £100 to £200 I believe it is worth repairing, especially as I do watch blu-ray dvd's on it. I tend to use my PS3 for hard-core gaming.

Of course that doesn't make me feel any better about Acer selling me some kit that hasn't lasted much longer than the 1 year warranty and refusing to do anything about it.

In this day and age warranties should be a minimum of 2 years on any electronic equipment otherwise the manufacturer is simply saying "it's cheap and I have no confidence in it lasting". I know there are extended warranties to be bought but these are overpriced insurance policies and are simply ways for the middle men to line their pockets.

Sorry, rant over ;-)

I'll let you know what the repair shop finds.
