RimmerUK: "I've come across this myself, and if you were to google the exact error code you'll probably find this is down to a bad download of the OS (so i'm assuming you didnt buy a retail copy of windows 7). There are no downloadble drivers for an optical drive, its part of the operating system, so the only way to solve it is to get hold of a better copy of windows."

It came with Vista installed, but when our department upgraded to 7 this past semester, I purchased the Windows 7 upgrade. Are you suggesting I purchase the "Full" version, and if so would it be beneficial to to even purchase the "Professional" or "Ultimate" versions?

Slipster101: "Go into the BIOS by pressing F2 when you power on the machine.

In the advanced settings you will find an option called Sata Mode : AHCI ......... try changing this to IDE.

Maybe you will get lucky installing your OS.

If your warranty has run out in the UK it will cost £70 to have the HDD put back to factory default."

I'm in the US, and I've already talked with Acer about it. Since it's just 2 months out of warranty, they won't charge me for any hardware they may need to give me, but they will still charge for the labor (or is it "labour"?). I also have to incur the shipping charge, which is almost as much as the service charge.

I did buy this from a local retailer (Best Buy), and I just happen to know the manager of their repair department. He said he would look into cutting me a deal on getting it repaired, but he just left for vacation this week and I won't know anything for certain until he gets back.

On the the plus side, he did have one of his techs pull files off of the drive (using a Linux shell I believe) and I did get two of the projects I was working on completed.

Monday afternoon, June 14th, between classes, I was working on a Photoshop project and looked down at a little pop-up from Windows Update saying a "Critical Update" needed my attention. Normally I don't bother with updates unless I really need it, but I was finishing up with my project anyway and I had a couple of hours to kill. After all, a "Critical Update" for Windows 7 is something that requires you to drop everything and settle the matter, right? So I went ahead and clicked to download and install the update. The dialog box said it was going to take about 12 minutes, so I finished up my little bit I needed to finish, saved, and after a few minutes shut PS down and waited for the box to say it was time to restart.

I sat and watched the last little bit of time to tick down, and then it started it's install process. That's when it went all SNAFU. A dialog box popped up stating something has stopped working (I didn't catch the filename in time) and then the fans revved up and the computer proceeded to the blue screen stating it was dumping the memory, etc., and then it shut down. A couple of expletives later, I pressed the power button to bring it all back, but it hasn't been back since.

First thing I tried was booting into safe mode. No go. It gives me the startup screen with the option of "<F2> Setup" and "<F12> Boot Device", but it blanks out completely after that. I was able to get it to boot from the DVD, but not from a USB.

Next was the Windows 7 Update disk (I have yet to find my original Acer Recovery CD that came with the system)and "Startup Repair". Windows says it could not detect a problem with the start up.

I then damned the computer again and attempted a system restore and system image recovery. It tells me there is none. I did a restore point just 3 weeks ago both on the D: drive and my 1gb external. Windows insists there is no restore point at either location.

So I finally yelled out the BIG expletive, and rather loudly, and decided I'll just reinstall Win7, deal with hunting down my files I needed (especially that Photoshop one I was just working on) in the .old directory, and worry about recovering the system this weekend.

But it won't let me re-install Win7. When I go to install it, it asks for the CD/DVD drivers. To my knowledge there is none on the HD (and I checked by both using the folder selection it gives, as well as using the DOS prompt and the recovery screen and searching around in the directories) and apparently none on the Win7 Update DVD. I've also tried searching online for drivers, but apparently there are none.

I'm almost at my wits end and thinking of calling Acer tech support and have the guy on the other end read from a script all the things I've already tried and then finally telling me to send it in. My warranty was over a couple of months ago so I'm not even sure what they would do.

Any clues from anyone on how to proceed in getting my computer back up and running? I like this computer too much to just give up on it, but I'm lacking funds to have someone else work on fixing it.

My Acer notebook 4920 came with Windows Vista Home Premium when I bought it about 2 years ago. Three months ago, I upgraded it to Windows 7 and it seems I cannot access the Acer Arcade Instant-On. I checked on the OEM partition where the Instant-On is located and it is still intact. Everytime I press the Arcade Man button when my computer is off, the laptop just boots into Windows 7. Is there a solution present that can help me access the Arcade Instant-on everytime I press the Arcade man button. I know that performing recovery will solve it but I do not want to go back to Vista anymore. Thanks and good day!

I have an Acer TravelMate 4720 that has been completely formatted. I don't have the restore CD, but I do have an original XP Pro CD.

While trying to set up XP Pro on the system, it says it can not find any hard drives. I see that I might need to install a SATA driver, but can't get that working either. Most of the driver install says I need a floppy disk to use while installing Windows and pressing F6. The TravelMate does not have a floppy drive. I've tried from a USB flash drive and a CD as alternatives, but setup can't find those files either..

I was able to install Ubuntu with no problems on the computer, and was hoping I could just install XP Pro over that, but no luck with that either!

Is there something I'm missing?? Any help would be appreciated!

And make sure you disabled D2D Recovery in BIOS-Main, because as said in Service Repair manual this
"Enables, disables D2D Recovery function. The function allows the user to create a hidden partition on hard disc drive to store operation system and restore the system to factory defaults."
This should be disabled.

Take out HDD (google around - there are videos explaining that, and service repair manual for Aspire One), connect to another PC, install and open up Active@ Partition Recovery, select this HDD, go through menu - Tools-Fix MBR (Create Typical MBR), in first popup window select Yes (agreing to fix MBR), in second select No (agreing to fix MBR and delete all partitions on HDD, because Yes- you agreing to fix MBR without deleting all partitions, but be sure you back up your data, if you have any). Then with Acronis Disk Director wipe this HDD. Then repeat fixing exactly the same with Active@ Partition Recovery. Go back to Acronis Disk Director, create partition - primary and set it active. Format with NTFS (if you want to Install XP or later, and if its not SSD). Then shut down PC, take out your HDD, back to the netbook. Now you can install any Windows if you haven't other problems with your netbook. Better try installing with external DVD drive, because USB drives sometimes fail.

I have an Aspire 3690g that I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium. After upgrading, I enabled the stereo mix option and set it to default, but it did not work. I have installed and reinstalled the Realtek HD Audio drivers from both the acer support site and the Realtek site. It says that it is working properly, but the green bar does not raise next to it, even with the level set to 100. I have tried searching google for a solution, but I can only find how to enable it, not how to get it to work properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi dvruger,

I'm told that Mentor Media is known to be very slow in responding to customers but they are about to open a "complain here" email address for cases like this.

And as the whole fulfillment (production/shipping/payment) is done by Mentor Media - and not Acer - your best bet is to hammer on their door until you get a response.

If anyone gets wind of the mail address or URL could you please post it here for everyone else?

Thanks for your reply, I have repartitioned and reformatted via the XP install.

I think I was able to identify the problem - either a faulty memory stick or vga problem. I tried loading UBuntu live CD (was going to edit the boot.ini file to include logging and debugging), and it gave me an error CANNOT LOAD X DESKTOP. Weird because I was able to install the Ubuntu netbook version. Go figure ...

The unit goes back to ACER for repair.

did you try ubuntu first? if so, you will probably need to wipe the hard drive and repartition and reformat it for windows use. Windows and linux use different boot loaders. the linux bootloader may still be present preventing windows from loading.

Hi guys,

I am having a weird issue. I am trying to install Windows XP or Windows 7 on an Aspire One AOA150 netbook, but it fails. It has a 160gb hdd, and I AM ABLE to install Ubuntu on it.

Here is what happening. I use a usb stick (tried two different, don't think the USB stick is the problem).

1. For Windows XP, I go through the text portion, and when I start the GUI portion, I get the XP logo, and it just sits there forever. I can see the bar under the logo scrolling, but it's not the smooth scrolling, it looks kinda choppy. There is no disk activity what soever (hdd or usb).

2. I tried with Windows 7, and similar things happen. It goes through the initial progress bar, then I see the Win 7 logo, then the logo disappears and the screen turns black. It just sits there forever with no activity.

3. I've also tried to run a Windows Live USB, but similar thing happens - it just hangs at the beginning.

I have also upgraded the BIOS using the FN + ESC method, but it did not make any difference. Also, I do not see the AHCI option in my BIOS (even after the update).

Ubuntu installs and works without any issues whatsoever. Do you guys have any ideas? I spent 3-4 days trying out different things and am already out of ideas. Last thing I could think of i borrowing a USB DVD from a friend, but I don't think this would do the trick.

Thanks in advance.

I friend of mine in the UK (not a member here) bought an acer with my recomendation. He applied for the free W7 upgrade but never got his confirmation email, nor has he got his upgrade. I tried to reapply, but it said an upgrade has already been shipped for that serial number. Yet he still doesn't have it.
We tried contacting Mentor Media about the order, but can't get through there form without the order number, which would have been supplied on the confirmation we didn't get.
How can we get in contact with someone who can help us out?

can i get any help off you with getting this 8930g to work? been about 3 months trying to get it running properly. it's doing my head in! i think i got most of the drivers working on xp, but my reason for downgrading is the fact that i run a business from home, and the program i use to create deisgns will not work on vista. i have now downgraded, but the program still won't work. it uses a security dongle to run the program, but keeps saying it cannot find the security device. i am narrowing down my problem list, and think i am having the problem because the machine needs to be set to ahci in the bios. do you know how i can achieve this?

Hi everyone, Aspire 6930, I was trying to use Erecovery to reset to factory defaults, at 82% it froze and when I attempted to get it going again it shut down. now on start up I get a disk read error, and am prompted to use ctrl-alt-del to restart, this gets me no where, I have no back up disks, I guess this is what I get for relying on the partition, please anyone any help is much appreciated, I now have a really nice paperweight, I do have an XP disk I could try but would really like to re-coup Vista.

Hi not sure how similar the 8930g and the 8920g are but I have tried downgrading my 8920 a couple times and can get it really close, the only drivers that seem not to work are the ones for the wireless remote control, the only other issue I had was I could never get the Tuba (sub) speaker to work, it really frustrated me that the remote wouldn't work so I always end up going back to Vista

I know, and I hope Microsoft is offering a good discount for those who wish to upgrade from Vista. I don't know what I'll do between August and the actual release though. :-( I'm up for suggestions...

Drivers will most likely be available sometime after the actual release of Windows 7. In which case you'll have to buy a copy of it. The current anticipated release is Christmas 2009, at least that's what Microsoft is shooting for. In any case the beta copies cut off in August I believe. So you'll have to buy Windows 7 when it comes out.

Hum, I see. I know about people who have XP on their 8930 but I suppose this means they've had to give up some of the functions.
Now, not wanting to switch back to Vista nor risking to find myself with a system that just won't work fine, I think I'll grit my teeth and stay with 7 unless some major problem happens. Either Acer or Microsoft will release working drivers for the fingerprint recognition - the only non-basic device in the computer I really would love to use - in the future, I hope. Thanks for your answer.

Windows 7 is a beta. Not all devices are supported. Your laptop will not fully work with Windows XP, it came out in 2001 after all. XP64 also has horrible support, you don't want to use that at all!

As far as I know the 8920/8930 was built for vista with the drivers as well. Im not aware that any are compatible for XP.
