I Bought my Aspire 5742 around 6 months ago, as for £499 it seemed a good deal. I needed something good enough to support Photoshop, Lightroom and Dreamweaver, and more importantly I wanted a laptop that I could rely on - the main reason I went for an Acer.

Recently, however, things have started to go wrong. Firstly, the laptop seems to really struggle when running any of the afore mentioned programs - which seems a little odd, considering this laptop has a 4gb processor. This, I assume, can be remedied by expanding the memory, so no biggy.

What is the more alarming issue is how the laptop keeps losing connection to the wireless. After around an hours use, my connection goes and cannot be re-established, meaning I have to restart my machine. I've googled the issue previously, and found no remedy. Strangely, the issue gets worse when the machine is running from the battery. Then connection can sometimes only last a matter of minutes. I've read up on energy management and try a few things in there, but it's not made any difference.

Is anyone else experiencing these issues with thier Acer machine..?

the speed will vary depending on settings and chipsets used. try a driver update for the laptop, it may connect at a higher speed.

You may also try a firmware update on the router, or adjust your radio settings. e.g. 40 MHz channel bonding, try a different sub-channel etc.

It is unlikely you will ever get full 300 Mbps unless the router and wireless card have chips from the same manufacturer. e.g. broadcom, atheros, marvell, intel, etc.

Does anyone know what's the maximum supported link speed for the Wireless-N Broadcom chipset that used in the Acer Aspire 5741G?

I have all the latest Win 7 drivers and can never connect to my router faster than 130 Mb whereas a Mac Pro connects at 300 Mb consistently

I emailed and called Acer technical support numerous times but they were completely useless. They could only tell me that the laptop had Wireless A/B/G/N. No Duh!

I have an Acer Aspire One Model AOA150. Running On Windows XP. The Wireless Card Is a Atheros AR5007EG version 7.6.0.224. The Router I Have Is a Belkin N150.

Now to the problem...I can only seem to connect to the internet when I Use WEP or No security what so ever. When I change it too WPA/WPA2 it says I'm connected but when I open Internet Explorer Or Firefox it wont let me connect. I would like to be able to Use WPA/WPA2. I called Belkin three times and they cant seem to help me. I read other forums as well I tried to uninstall the driver, restart, and let it reinstall. Still no luck. I was hoping I can get some help.

Oh on a side note... I Have a htc hero smart phone and I'm able to connect to WPA/WPA2 with out any problem so I'm thinking its Atheros AR5007EG? Maybe? Thats The Highest Version I found on the Acer Website as well.

Hi,

I've just reformatted my acer 5920, using the restore to factory settings tab. Everything seems to be fine except the wireless, for some reason when trying to reconnect it to the network (which it can see) - it says 'the network security key provided does not match the network security key for this network...'. Although I know the security key for the stupid livebox is definitely correct. Any thoughts?

Try downloading the latest driver from Acer and see if that helps. If that doesn't...

Remove the battery and the ac adapter from the netbook. Then open up the back cover to see if the wireless card has it's antenna's attached.

If that still doesn't help take it back for a new one and ask to test it in the store to make sure it works. (assuming the store has a wireless network)

Got an Aspire One Happy for Christmas and can't seem to get a solid wireless connection when more than 6 feet from the hub. Wireless light on front of netbook is flashing slowing (5sec interval).
I already have an older Aspire one and it works well anywhere in the house so am assuming it's not a router/hub issue. Any ideas?

Hey guys! Totally forgot I posted this!

Yes, I'm still having touch-screen issues. Lately they had been worse than ever, the mouse 'jumping' to the top and staying there until I rebooted. I had to disable this.

Interestingly... a screen clean fixed this. I guess my screen was mucky and it was breaking the IR field.

However I still have a dead zone.

Watching a YouTube video for an Acer laptop which uses the same optic Infa-Red 'touch screen' hardware. Apparently the hardware connector belt cable might be loose or dirty, and all you need to do is take it out, give it a clean, and put it back in firmly.

Downside; I haven't got a bleedin' clue how to take my computer apart. The front panel is held on by demon magic, and won't give way any further than half-way down. No screws or anything. My computer is out of warranty, and I'm saving up for a laptop now; since I missed the portability; so I'm willing to break my computer apart to figure out if it's fixable.

So I'm putting it down to messy hard-ware assembly. Which is fair enough, to some degree; but they could have done some quality control before shipping. If anyone has any ideas on how to take the damn front cover off; drop me a line!

well ensure you're using the correct driver, that it's installed properly, and that nothing is damaged about the card or antennas. After that then the card is probably defective.

Several things can interfere with a wireless connection.

Microwaves, wireless telephones being the most common two. Not the mention concrete absorbs wireless signals like crazy.

Ensure you have the latest drivers. Try and connect to other networks. Usually when wireless is spotty it's the router not the computer.

Hi

I've just bought an Acer 5532 with Windows 7 (Home Premium 64 bit) to replace my old XP laptop.

I'm having trouble getting my Apple wireless bluetooth keyboard to work. (It installed with no fuss at all in XP)

I've managed to pair it up ok - I type the passkey with it and the install appears to be successful - the keyboard shows up in the Devices window. But typing on the keyboard yields nothing.

I wonder if it might be the keyboard driver? In device manager, only 1 driver is showing in keyboards - the Launch Manager. I gather this is an Acer specific driver - maybe it doesnt like my bluetooth keyboard - but how do I install another keyboard driver to run alongside it? It only seems to allow one driver and if I install a different one the laptop integral keyboard stops working!

I've run out of ideas as to what to try - really hoping someone can help

Many thanks

I purchased an Acer Aspire Z5610 4 months ago and have have intermittant problems with the touch screen completely dying, especially after the computer has gone to sleep and after rebooting. It got worse and worse over time and then became completely dead all the time.

The pen icon disappears from control panel when not working.

Acer advised me to restore to factory settings, which I did. Worked great for one day. I started adding programs back. I thought Nortons may have been disabling it, so I uninstalled that and tried Mcafee. I also decided to not let the computer go to sleep, using a screen saver instead. Worked well all day, but when I reboot this morning - nothing.

I love this computer and the main reason for purchase was the touch screen as I do a lot of graphic work. The problem is costing me many hours of frustration.

Any further suggestions? Could this be a hardware issue rather than a software issue?
One message I get is that the USB driver has a problem -could that be related?

If I get them to take the computer away, they will most likely do what I just did, and I will be back to square one. I'm tempted to get a reufund and start again with something else, if I can!

Hi...

I've just bought the Acer 4810TZG model and I must say I am very impressed. One thing is puzzling me though. The wireless, backup and powersmart, so called 'keys' above the keyboard don't seem to respond to my touch as indicated in the manual.

The wireless is lit and so is the powersmart when I am using the battery power, but they don't do anything when pressed. Should they? Or is this 'touch sensitive' feature not available on this model?

Many thanks.

I've had a few problems with my parnter's acer and after a clown masquerading as a computer repair guy had hold of it, the wifi seems to have packed up.
The repair guy swears it's not him, but then he also swears the mysterious missing 2Gb of memory is nothing to do with him either.
But anyway...
Device manager claims the card is there (Intel Pro 3945ABG), and working normally (yes, I know), but when you go into vista (yes I know ok) and start up networking, it claims that the wifi is switched off.
Problem is when I push the wireless button on the keyboard, the screen displays "no device".

Is there another way to start the wireless on this model? Alternatively how does the wireless card connect up to the button? Presumably even if I replace the card I still need to connect up to this control?

Your decription confuses me. Anyway, have you done a BIOS upgrade on the unit ? I've never paid attention to a issue like this and I've never come across a client complaining about that. Maybe there's a setting in the BIOS - something like , WLAN & BT on/off after power-off/on/fail/resume.

I have the same problem with the screen not correctly responding to touch input in the top right corner.

I just bought the Aspire z5610, and I'm also in Australia.

Touching about 1/2cm down and 2-3cm in from the right the input registers about 5mm away from my finger. So if I touch a Close button it actually registers on the Maximise button. You can actually see the little star shaped touch indicator about 5mm away from your finger. This occurs in an area about 1cm along and is especially annoying because it is in the area where the Min/Max/Close bouttons often reside.

I haven't had a issue with the mouse or keyboard.

I recently installed Windows 7 on my 5920G. I don't normally use the battery to protect it from wearing off. Every time I unplug the notebook, then replug and start Windows, the wireless and bluetooth adapters turn themselves off, and I have to hit the buttons on the right to turn them back on. Any ideas why this happens and possible solutions?
Please note that this happens only when I unplug and the battery is removed. Also note that I didn't have this problem running Vista.
Thanks

sounds like a driver update is needed.

probably an atheros 5007xx or similar wireless card?

if so, try this site for updated drivers.

Hello thanks for your reply.

Wired I can get a connection and I previously had a Netgear WGR614 which I had no problem connecting the netbook or laptop to. I can also connect on friends routers, a BT hub plus a linksys.

For the last few days it has failed to aquire network address but today this is what has happened on all security settings:

None = Can connect no problem
WEP = connects with limited or no connectivity
WPA-PSK [TKIP] = fails to aquire network address (this is the one I was advised to use)
WPA2-PSK [AES] = connects with limited or no connectivity
WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] = Connects with limited or no connectivity

On the ones with limited or no connectivity it is failing to receive the packets sent so fails to load a web page.

As I bought it through my ISP they will not offer me technical support unless I sign a 6 month contract @ £6pm. Netgear will not offer me support as I bought it through my ISP and I am not paying Acer £1.50 pm for out of warranty support.

I dont know my way around the router settings but other than the above Ive mentioned I have also tried changing channels.

Other than that its all new to me sorry.

plug it into the router, does it work?

if so, probably a setting on your router.

if not, maybe network issues on the laptop.

also, does it connect to another wifi router? find an open router at like a hotel or coffee shop.

Hello I hope you can help me.

I have recently purchased a Netgear N300 router and have managed to connect my Dell laptop to it no problem so I know the router is working. The thing is I cannot connect my Acer Aspire One netbook to it via the wireless. My netbook locates the router and I can enter the passwword but it fails to aquire ip address.

Im not too computer savvy and Ive not been able to find any direct fixes searching other forums and found this one so I thought I would ask if anyone here knows what can possibly be wrong.

Thanks in advance.

That's what happened to me and my acer - I have done everything suggested to eliminate software issues, had similar problems and eventually concluded that my wifi card died. Check your device manager to see if it even displayed first - if not, you might have to do the same thing I am about to do now, i.e. force my netbook open and change the wifi card.
