On other websites for motherboards and laptops I've owned, the vendor has described what the updates in the BIOS did on a functional level. For instance, an HP bios update on my wife's older laptop enabled use of 4 GB sticks of ram. Does anyone know of a place for pure BIOS discussions? The acer website is generally lacking in any detail. I'm specifically looking for 7736z info.

This past weekend I bought my wife an Aspire 1 D257. After charging the battery, I turned it on, noted that the battery was 100%, unplugged it, and gave it to the wife to use. In less than 2 hrs the battery was dead. What? No way I say. But true.

The reviews I read on the D257 indicated up to 8 hours of battery life. I would have been happy with 4 hrs, but can't handle less than 2 hours.

Solution? I would like to find an extended life battery (i.e. 6 cell) for the D257, but so far I am unable to find a source.

HELP ME PLEASE! Cry for assistance before I have to take it back to Walmart for my money back.

Hi guys
i have a acer aspire T671 which is a spare pc. and it currently uses a pentium D 915.... however i have a spare celeron E3300 dual core cpu which is significantly more powerful than the pentium D 915.. however when i tried to use the E3300 on the acer T671 motherboard it wouldnt boot and the screen stayed black !
the motherboard in question is a acer "MRS600M" model... however my question is " would updating the bios allow me to run the celeron E3300 on this board "
as we know updating/flashing the bios updates the motherboard so it can support newer processors and hardware.. so do you think the bios update would work ?
note : the motherboard in question has NOT been flashed previously and it supports ddr2 ram and has a pci-express x16 bus(slot)
any help will be much appreciated
cheers guys

On Tuesday, Acer chairman JT Wang warned the opposition that his company has moved away from purely defending its position in the market as seen in 2011. Instead, Acer is now in full attack position and poised to deal a vicious blow from four specific angles: ultrabooks, netbooks, tablets and smartphones. The chairman made his virtual war cry during Acer's ceremony for the Lunar New Year.

Acer's strongest blow, according to JT Wang, will be on the ultrabook front. The company will reportedly launch four new models in 2Q12 alone, and then an additional, unspecified number of ultrabooks sporting a tasty pricetag of $699 to $799 USD the following quarter. Acer president Jim Wong added that the company will adopt a passive strategy over pricing, that going forward, user experience and demand will become the major selling points rather than a competitive price tag.

In the tablet sector, Acer plans to steer clear of the high-end and low-end markets ruled by Apple's iPad and Amazon's Kindle Fire respectively. Instead, Acer will attack via the mid-range avenue priced between $299 and $499 USD. Currently this specific market has an estimated shipment scale of around 10 to 20 million units, but that may change once Apple reportedly introduces the iPad 3 which addresses both the mid-range and high-end markets.

As for Acer's netbook assault, the company assumes that developed countries will sway towards the ultrabook form factor. However the shipment volume of netbooks in emerging countries is still growing, allowing Acer to maintain its 45-percent worldwide market share. But eventually that will come to an end, as the netbook and ultrabook sectors are expected to merge into one happy segment within the next 18 to 24 months.

Tuesday’s report did not offer details surrounding Acer's smartphone assault, so stay tuned.

my partner's laptop randomly turns itself to sleep mode or on occasion actually turns off. She uses it for playing games at times but it also turns off/sleep mode while just looking at the internet or playing music. It is always connected to a power supply as the battery died sometime ago. I thought it might be over heating but it also turns off shortly after starting up, and the vents are dust free. Ive also tried to turn off sleep mode/hibernate and it still continues.

Hopefully someone here will set me straight, but before someone says replace the battery with the same voltage as the old one, I'll explain why I'm cautious...
I bought this Aspire 6930G (model 583G25Bn) a while back, as a refurbished unit. Therefore it didn't come in the original packaging and it's possible that the battery was pulled from another unit. Back then the battery would only last around 30 minutes then the laptop would switch off without battery warnings. I only had a 30 day warranty so got a replacement battery from the supplier, which lasted about an hour initially but fairly quickly went the same way as the first battery. Now the battery will last around 5 minutes before the laptop just dies, so it's a case of keeping it plugged in all the time. Otherwise this has been a good machine.
So I was looking at buying a replacement battery and noticed that both 11.1V and 14.8V types are listed for this model. So, can anyone clarify which is the correct type? I'm unsure whether the 11.1V that I already have is correct and I doubt the supplier would have even bothered to check if the right battery was supplied. The DC rating on the laptop is 19V, 4.74A, if this helps at all. I checked on the Acer online store and they don't list the 6930G, but the 6920G, which I assume is the same, but they don't state the battery voltage, only that it's 8 cells and 4800mAh, which I think may be the 14.8V type

Recently, when I turn on my Aspire 5820tg, no networks are found and a red X is over my signal bar. I check to see if wireless is turned on. It is. Device manager says the all drivers are up to date and my adapter is working. Then it starts working after a day, and stops again after being turned on. Any ideas what is wrong?

Hi,

When I try to update my new M3970 to the current BIOS from the Acer site the flash update process fails with a response:

ROM file ROMID is not compatible with existing BIOS ROMID

I have successfully installed previous BIOS updates to the same computer, and I downloaded this three times to ensure it was not corrupted in transmission.

ok, so i got home from work today, eager to play one of my favorite games.
I started and my laptop just turned itself off. So i investigated. i got a hardware monitoring program, and i noticed that my GPU temperature was slowing increasing.

upon further investigation i noticed that the cooling fan wasn't spinning either.

This is where it get weird how ever..

The cooling fan will run and work perfectly, keeping my GPU cool while i am in start up or the bios. But as soon as the laptop loads windows, it just stops running, and doesn't start again allowing the GPU to heat up (surprisingly the CPU temperature remains rather normal considering the GPU and CPU share the same cooling fan).

The fan settings in windows are set to active, and i am running windows 7. This problem has only just started to occur.

Does anybody have any idea's as to what is happening and how i might fix this?

OK Acer, you really dropped the ball on this one. DO you really truely even read the emails sent in?
Here is what I sent to you:

I've called several times now about a replacement battery that will not charge at my computer. At your suggestion I've:
Updated the BIOS
Re-calibrated the battery (or tried to)
Un-installed the battery in the device manager and let it reinstall.

All of the above have failed.
Of three different batteries, two simply won't show as even being attached to the computer, the other showed it present and charging, but failed to actually charge. None of them once drained, have had a bit of power put back into them.

My original battery though wore out, will still show as attached, and charges, just won't hold more than 5-10 minutes worth of charge any more.

I need a battery for this computer, or it's worthless. Why won't the replacement batteries charge but my original battery will?

And here is your response:

Thank you for contacting Acer America. I’ll be happy to assist you with this issue.

As per the serial number (removed) your system is out of warranty.

Daniel, after reviewing your email, I understand that you require a new battery for your computer.

Daniel, you can purchase a new battery from the following link. || http://us-store.acer.com/category.aspx?modelID=131&ModelName=Aspire%25208930G ||

For further clarifications please feel free to visit our website: http://support.acer.com/

Thank you for contacting Acer.
Have a great day!

Respectfully,

Did I not already tell you I needed a battery? Yet I also need one that WORKS!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqQ3kdtUNFc

What memory should I use for upgrading to 4gb?

Following are suggestions from forums that I found around the net:
Corsair CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9 4GB 1X4GB DDR3-1333 CL9-9-9-24 204PIN SODIMM Memory?
Kingston 4 GB SODIMM (Kingston KVR1066D3S7/4G)?

But no secondary confirmation that it works.
Or if there is a BIOS limitation to it.

I have a new aspire 5551 notebook and I am perplexed by this strange chirping noise coming from the unit when it is in sleep mode. The noise happens at a regular interval. At the same time, the activity led on the optical drive blinks at the same interval. There is no disc in the drive.

Thoughts?

OK, before anyone says, I know all about 32-bit OS's only being only able to access a 4Gb address space, but I also know about Physical Address Extension (PAE) which allows a 32-bit OS to access the space above 4Gb. I also know that some memory is reseved for buffers, registers etc so all memory may not be available.

Having said all that, I have 2 laptops on my desk at present, an Acer 8920G and a Dell E6400. Both have 4Gb physical memory. The Dell, running XP, reports about 3.5Gb of ram (3620866K) while the Acer, running Windows 7, only report 3Gb (3070M).

So the question is why the Acer doesn't appear to be using any of the 'top' 1Gb while the Dell manages to make half of it available?

Is there some setting to change somewhere? I can't see anything in the BIOS and have tried enabling PAE (although I didn't really expect that to work as it's meant for memory above the 4Gb limit).

Or is the system actually already using the extra and just not reporting it to Windows 7?

As the title says, this is more of a puzzle than a problem, since the real answer (if I actually had applications that needed all that memory) is to switch to 64-bit.

I have a Acer Aspire 8920G with Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit installed. I just bought a new 5.1 Trust speaker system but i only can get sound from front speakers. I installed the last drivers available for Windows 7 from Realtek. I configured the mic and Line-in as audio output in the HD Audio Manager, but still only front play sound in the test. The 6 speakers work perfect under Linux. I googled my problem, but i didn't find any solution for me. I hope someone can help me!!!

I just bought a new D260-2dkk Aspire one. I powered it on and started configuring it to my liking and then shut it down. (Note: I had plugged in an SD card that I was using for Readyboost in Windows 7) . Later when I went to restart the computer the power light came on and the fan comes on for a second or so, but the computer does not boot up and the LCD screen stays black--nothing at all on the screen and it seems to be powered off. I do not see any other signs of life besides the power light, no sign of HDD activity or response to keys, the computer just seems dead.

I can power it off by holding the power button down for about 5 seconds. I tried all the usual things for this description from the web/Acer site and nothing has helped. I made sure the system had fully discharged its power (disconnecting all power/battery and holding down the power button for many minutes (I was desperate)) it sat overnight after doing that and still no change when trying it again.

I've found articles about doing a "blind flash" or crisis disk recovery of the bios, but they seem to be for other models of Aspire One netbooks as the procedure won't work (I tested the key combinations of holding fn + Esc then turning on the power). Can anyone help with a solution for this model of netbook? Is there another similar method (DYI) to fix this computer short of taking it in for return/repair?

I'm working on an Acer Aspire 5520 laptop that is out of warranty for a non-profit organization. It has a strange power on problem that I have no idea where to start working on. I'm at a complete loss and need some help. Here's the problem...

If the laptop is powered off for more than 6 hours it will not power on with the AC adapter plugged in. If I unplug the AC adapter from the laptop, it will power up on battery power. When it is turned on it will run fine on either battery or AC adapter. When it's powered off the battery light is lit, but when I press the power button, the battery light goes out. I unplug the AC adapter and the laptop will power on from the battery and the battery light will come back on. But this will only happen if the laptop is powered off for more than 6 hours, less than that it will power on fine.

I've tried removing the battery and powering on with just the AC adapter and it will not power on. I've tried removing the AC adapter and battery and holding the power button for 1 minute, did not solve the problem. I was having this problem before I did a full factory restore of the laptop and am still having after doing a factory restore. I sent an e-mail to Acer's technical support looking for suggestions and all they told me was to reset the BIOS to the default settings. I tried that and am now waiting for 6 hours to see if that solves it. I'm thinking it won't make a difference. I ran virus scans and Malware Bytes, both came up clean.

I'm at a loss of what to try next. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

I have Acer Aspire 6930g. I had screen problems and sent it for repair but due to cost issues, brought it back without repair. But to my surprise the screen works perfectly well (apparently Inverter and LCD cable were required to be replaced). As soon as I started the laptop, I found that there is no internet connectivity via the wireless, though the Ethernet cable connects me to Internet. When I press the wireless connection key the display reads "NO DEVICE". However the Network card in the hardware reads "device is working" no conflicts. I re-configured the router, turned off and on both the laptop and router, disconnected the device and reinstalled it, updated the drivers, but still it is not working. Please help.

Ive been using windows 7 beta since its relase with my aspire 6920 and I found it better then Vista. I only had one issue which wasnt a big deal. When the laptop was running only on battery windows media player sound would cut out temporarily however the song would continue to play. That didnt bother me that much.

Now im using Windows 7 RC and I am having a freezing issue. The computer boots up runs fine for about 15 minutes or so then freezes up. When these freeze ups occur I am running the bare minimum of programs. Sometimes it is only windows explorer. At max I may be running Windows Messenger, A Web browser and windows explorer.

It doesnt matter whether I use firefox or IE still freezes. Sometimes when these freezes occur I am able to bring up the task manager most of the time I am forced to restart via power button.

I installed clean versions of it several times to try to fix the problem. I do a clean install everytime I do not upgrade. I have even downloaded the latest N vidia drivers for my Geforce 9500 M.

Other observations; doenst seem to matter what program causes the freezing ill click something on either MSN, Web broser, or windows explorer and it happens. When i check performance on the task manager the RAM is usually fine maybe 20-30% The CPU usage tends to spile during this perios around 80-90% Im thinking this is the problem. AS far as i know drivers for cpus are built in. Correct me if im wrong.

I also switched back to XP and It ran alot better however It was taking forever to get all my drivers working. I was unable to install realtek and i cannot live without sound.

Wondering if anyone else is having these problems so we can work together on resloving it. I doubt its a hardware issue the laptop is a beast love the design but sometimes I just wanna smash it. I was having the odd problem with freezing when i was running Vista as well.

Sorry for the length of this post. Thanks,
