Hi. I bought an 8920G Sept08 and i'm a hardcore gamer. I mainly play BF2 which is about a 4 yr old game and my system can just about run this on 1920x1080 res, and a lower res with other elements set high. But I know that there will come a time (probably already here) when my card just won't be able to handle high settings for the the new game releases. And I have specifically in mind how it will handle BF BC2 which is set for release March next year... So I wanted to see what my Video card upgrade options were without having to upgrade anything else. I currently have Nvidia 9500m GS and have a core 2 duo T5750 2GHz cpu with 4GB ram on Vista HP 32.

I will consider all options at all prices. Just want to see what is on offer for me.

Thanks. I didn't and still don't know if i could use GeForce GTX 280M SLI - am I open to all of the mobile series, or would i have to upgrade other hardware to use something like this. I'm a bit of a noob since i use to be a console guy and i aint that clued up bout pcs and all their ting. Also could I easily switch over to ATI cards without having to bother anything in my system?

Hello there, hope this helps. Whilst is is possible to upgrade the graphics card in your model not every mxm based graphics card will fit or worse work at all size is one factor and the other is bios on both sides laptop and card.

The ones that are available to your model that are known to work are:

    Aspire 8920G - MXM-III, 9500M GS, ATI HD 3650, 9650M GS.

However just because your laptop can take mxm III does not mean (unfortunately) that you can stick any old mxm III card in it. Whilst mxm is a standard there are varying degrees, not many but still.

MXM III refers to the size of the card its the bit before which i am being a bit vague about, but, refers to the slot for the graphics card in the laptop. Example, your model and mine, the 8930g are both mxm III, however you wont be able to use the 9700m gt i have in my one in yours.

Factor in cooling to all of this and it is not as easy as you would have thought.

    Good luck

Thank you! That was very helpful and the advice i had hoped for. So i'm guessing that to play it safe i could go with the 9650M GS and no further at the present. But on that note i'm sure i've read that there isn't much difference between the 9500 and the 9650. Is that right?? And for the improvement there is, is it worth all the money and hassle just to say bump up your AA by 2 or whatever... Put simply, are the advantages of the 9650 over the 9500 worth bothering..? As i have said I only really play BF2. Plus i've just read that BF3 - if not BF BC2 - is going to be more resource friendly, so it's not so much of an issue.

    Your welcome Martyn.

You are kind of right in saying that there is not much difference between the 9650m gs and the 9500. There is but.... Now dont get me wrong you MAY notice a difference but is it worth the price difference for what you get the new card for and what you can sell the old one for as you said. Whilst these cards are swappable-ish they are oem, and thus the cards you will find for sale are mostly from dead machines, but not to say there are no new ones available is wrong

But... (and there always is), there may be light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.

Are you using stock graphics card drivers from acer's website? If so a nice change might be in order.

    Try http://www.guru3d.com/

They provide up to date links to drivers specifically for that card (generic based)
but each driver has had tweaks put in for certain areas of use. I'm being vague again but a crude example.

My 8930g came with stock drivers for 9700m gt. After auditioning a few different forceware drivers mixed in with certain software, ie, ntune, rm monitor and riva tuner a difference can and will be noticed.

However, heat is your enemy with certain drivers and a certain level of understanding is required for those applications. (Nothing intended) but bad things happen.

    Hi there,

I'm in need of a new graphics card as the 9500m I was using for my 8920 died (apparently it cannot be repaired)- would you be able to tell me if the 9650M is compatible? Or is it just for the 8920G?

This repair guy said that a new one would cost me £250-£300 which I find ridiculous and is now look for alternative, and if I could buy one on ebay?

*sigh* Please help... I'm missing my laptop so much.

    Ocean :)
