8920G cooling problem

Hey everyone, after around a year of suffering in silence ive decided to ask for help. When I bought my 8920G 2 years ago I had no fps problems in games, bt suddenly around summer time last year, the problems started. The FPS in World of Warcraft used to be fixed at 60 fps, but then suddenly at that point in time, the fps ranged from around 2-10 fps. I spent the Summer taking the laptop back and forth to my local acer repair centre and experienced the worst customer service in my life. They kept saying that there was no problem with the laptop and that I'm imagining everything. When I showed them the problem in action they promptly got rid of me by saying that my laptop is not a gaming laptop and i cannot expect 60 fps in a game - then why did I used to clock at 60fps for a whole year?

I finally figured out that it was a heating problem (you'd think that after taking the laptop to this damned repair centre every week for two whole months they would have figured that out, but no). I cleaned out the inside by vacuuming the dust, and voila - problem (almost) solved! While I was not getting my full 60fps, it was fluctuating between 40 to 60fps... not too bad. A massive improvement from 2 to 10 fps.

Next, I invested in an external cooling fan. The one I bought is of CoolerMaster and is for 17 inch models, though I was reassured that it will still be fine for my 18.4 inch laptop.

The cooler is very slow and USB powered - you barely notice the fans moving, and thus I think it is not making much of a difference. My latest problem now is that fps fluctuations are increasing, where one second it's 17fps and the next it's 59, increasing or decreasing by around 30 or 40 fps per second.

Apparently my GPU is running at around 90C while playing games. How is this possible if I have an external cooling fan running too? Should I invest in a better fan, maybe one for 18.4'' models, or is the problem something else? Just to clarify, the fan is USB powered as I said before, and the fans are very quiet and you literally have to put your hand against the vents to feel a (slight) air flow.

I'd like to solve this problem myself, as I'm certain the repair centre will just send me home with no solution as they did last year, so any suggestions or experience from 8920G owners (or any laptop owners for that matter) would be greatly appreciated :)

    Thanks!

You are quite right, it is down to the VGA card overheating and clocking itself down. I would have the thermal module off and be putting my own paste on it as the standard is to use a basic white thermal paste wheras adding arctic silver would be much better. Getting a new fan inside the unit is also a good move for cooling the unit down.
