Hi there and thanks for this great site. I was in the process of burning a disc with Nero 7 and have since found that my optical drive will not recognize any media, any attempt to read cd's or dvd's is met with an 'insert disc' request, even in safe mode. As suggested I tried the 1)'disable filter' fix 2) uninstall Nero and reinstall driver fix 3)The Microsoft automated fixit. Aspir 8920G Vista Ultimate. The device manager recognises the drive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

clean the lens and reseat the drive. if that doesn't work then it may have gone out.

Thanks for your prompt response. Of course my next question is; how to reseat the drive? Also, as the machine is still under warranty would doing so invalidate it? Anyhow will try cleaning the lens meanwhile. Cheers.

If it's still under warranty, I suggest to bring it to the nearest Acer center for investigation.
I guess the optical need to be replaced.

As it could be a warranty issue I contacted Acer support (Australia) and it was suggested I reset the machine to factory settings in order to isolate whether I have a soft or hardware issue. Strangely enough after backing up to D:drive and cleaning the lens the optical drive managed to read a blu-ray disc but alas no other form of optical media. I doubt if backing up had any effect but perhaps cleaning the lens (very gently) assisted somehow. Anyway I proceeded with the reset and no change. Although it reads a blu ray disc it seems to labor far more than previously. It would appear you were both correct in your diagnoses. Am waiting on a response from Acer support and will keep you informed of the outcome/solutions for the benefit of anyone else who encounters this issue.
