    Hello!
I have a 8930 G which has been running Windows 7 release candidate for some months now. I'm switching to Home Premium but there are a few things I need to know before formatting.

I've had many problems with graphic programs, expecially Photoshop and Painter, running so slow I couldn't even work with a graphic tablet, which made me rather angry because I bought this laptop to take full advantage of the 18" monitor and the graphic horsepower. So I need to know if anyone has has similar problems and how thy solved them (graphic card drivers update, installing an older version of Photoshop... ) Every time I run Photoshop the CPU usage goes up to 100% without apparent reason. I don't believe it's Windows or Photoshop CS4 since I run the same versions on a desktp computer and they work just fine.

To avoid excessive CPU usage, I was thinking to install just the most unavoidable things from all of the Acer software I have.
What are the programs I need to make everything run OK (card reader, Bluetooth, webcam, fingerprint recognition, Cinedash console...) without having useless stuff (such as games) taking up disk space or running in the background?
The names don't help me much, I need a description of what every program does, which I couldn't find anywhere so far.

    Thanks everyone for the help!

Can't help you with your Photoshop probs.

Check out the links below for advice on the second part of your problem.

When in doubt, the general solution is to "Acer" the machine with all of the latest drivers that are applicable for your model and Acer apps to be safe and then work your way towards tweaking/optimizing the system. The Acer apps are not gonna eat away much of your disk space. You only need to be concerned with disabling avoidable startup apps. Peter's article is a good place to start.

You are running Windows 7 RC which isn't officially supported by anyone really. There are going to be differences between your RC and the "gold" release of the OS. If you want to ensure that things are going to work fine you'll have to shell out for a copy of Windows 7 or go back to the OS that came with the laptop.

Second, Nvidia directly supports their laptop video cards. Download the latest driver from them. That should help with the graphics issues.

Regarding your question about docmentation, my impression is that Acer don't provide much. Most programs seem to have help files, but you can only get to those after installation. I don't think it would be difficult for Acer to provide PDF files explaining what each of the Acer supplied programs do, but if such files exist I haven't found them yet.

In terms of what to install, you need to get all the drivers from the Acer website for the 8930G for Windows 7. The Fingerprint driver includes Bio Protection, but I don't think you get any other applications. If you want them, you need to download them. The only 'essential' one is Launch Manager, which handles the hot-keys (mail, web, 'e' and the on-screen display of caps-lock etc). The other applications, as far as I can see, are only available as Vista version, but I think this just means that they haven't changed for Win7.

Of course, after installtion, you may want to upgrade so drivers, e.g. the display adaptor, to non-Acer versions. I can't recall which display driver the 8930G uses, but the official Nvidia driver works fine on the 8920G and is a later version.

For Peter: I'm not running RC anymore, but the Home Premium retail version.
It seems to have solved most of my compatibility and graphic problems. Most of the Vista drivers worked all along or have been updated (Bio Protection seems to be fine now! Finally.) Probably some time will be needed for total compatibility but I'm pretty satisfied now.

Starnamer: thanks, this was actually a useful tip.
