   on an Acer 8471 downgrade to XP Pro:

   Completely intermittent loss of local network connection (message says network cable unplugged)

   To fix I must disable the 'local area connection' then enable it again.

   Tried various cables, modems & tested other computers with with same, they do not lose their connection.

   This may not happen at all one day, and a dozen times the next day. As far as I can tell, software running at the time does not influence the behaviour.

   A possibly related glitch is, I must 'end now' windows explorer when I power down the system (even if I had not had explorer open)

   I feel there is some problem with my XP install, but thought I'd ask and see if there was an issue with the Acer 8471, before I do a reload.

   sounds like an old OS not being able to support new hardware.

   check for lan and chipset driver updates, bios updates for compatibility. may want to reinstall W7 instead of XP.

   Did get newest lan driver, no change.

   Today is the worst its been, disconnects every 5 minutes.

   Prefer to keep XP, so all computers on same OS.
   Hope its not a new HW old OS problem.
