Acer 8930 Realtek Digital Output stopped working

I have installed the new drivers, uninstalled the hardware, reinstalled the hardware, all the usual stuff... When I choose the speakers the sound works but the sound is horrible... almost cant listen to it.
The Acer HD Audio Manager says that the Digital is working, sound works when using this software and the Digital is chosen as the default. But no sound in any other programs.. including Windows (running Vista 64 bit Home). I switch back to "Speakers" and the horrible sound returns.
My daughter machine (15 year old) she says she installed nothing... but something changed..
Really stuck....
