Acer Aspire 5732Z Touchpad Button Issue
(1 post)-
Acer Aspire 5732Z : OS Windows Vista/Windows 7 with ALPS Touchpad driver
----------------------------------------------
OhayoCondition or Symptoms Experienced :

*Unit switches left touchpad button to right one so that the left click is right click and the right-click does nothing(functionless).*In the synaptics pogram mini screen, it appears that the button is somehow stuck for a while.
*This problem comes and goes randomly. Sometimes it dissapprears and sometimes it stays a while. The durations differ greatly.
Attempts to solve issue :

*BIOS upgrades don't help and there are 4 available ones - Tried after each upgrade with no change of abovementioned issue.*Re-Installing the OS, installing synaptcis driver will not help either. This issue does not occur on XP with ALPS driver installed. although the 5732Z does not support Windows XP and will give you issues when running XP. So testing in XP environment is not an option.
*Removing the battery and letting the unit run on A/C also doesn't solve anything - which indicates that this is not a battery related issue.
*Installing and using a USB mouse on any port is a temp work-around but does not solve the issue.
*Booting from Windows Vista ERD didn't have a issue with the touchpad which will let me assume, that a bootable OS will use different core drivers and communication procedures for the touchpad as a normal vista/windows 7 installation.
*RAM Tests didn't find any issues. As the unit came with 2 modules (3GB DDR3: 1GB, 2GB), I'll tested each individually - Both do not have any faults nor did it make a difference to use them seperately.
*Disconnecting all non-critical components revealed a yet weird situation : Firstly, the buttons are on the mainboard and are not part of the actual touch-pad but will only work when the touchpad cable is connected to the touchpad. Secondly, having only a extrernal monitor, the mainboard, A/C ,the TP components and the launchboard connected and NOTHING ELSE, the issue revealed itself.
Solution :

*Replace faulty touch-pad cable [that is connecting the TP to the mainboard]. In my case, the cable had a short somewhere and when pressing onto the top cover it sometimes shorted and sometimes not bringing us the issue as mentioned at the beginning. When pressing on the cable directly AND by watching the ALPS mini window in the taskbar, it will reveal when it shorts by highlighting the right TP button when it is not even pressed.Acer P/N:

now for the ROFLMAO part, the top cover of a Emachine E525/E725 will fit PERFECTLY onto this Aspire AND the mainboards of the two are completely similar. As I am a pessimist, I believe that although the issue is solved, it might not even be the true solution. I'm assuming that the connection or cable port on the mainboard may or could be faulty thus causing this issue. The new cable may just lie differently than the previous one and thereby balancing the pressure of the top cover differently. So lets see how long it will last...
