Acer Aspire GZ5 Factory Restore doesn't

    Greetings,
I'm having trouble restoring Windows XP SP3 on an Aspire One, Model ZG5.

Using an external USB/CD, I boot from the System Disk and, following the recovery options, am prompted for "Recovery disc 1" where I insert the Windows XP SP3 Home Editiion CD (for distribution with a new Acer...). The restore seems to proceed, Copying 100% of required files from "Z:\Images\", but on next step install aborts and throws "Restore failed - reason 0x0000048f" with a progress-bar at 1%.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong? I'm tempted to start messing with partitions but am afraid of doing more damage...

    Thanks/Cheers!

you can try wiping the drive to remove all the partitions, but probably a bad hard drive.

Hi TechieDiva - thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I can see how you might think it's a hardware problem, but more likely it's a "soft" problem.

The machine had Windows XP on it when I got it, and the problem started when I tried to do a restore. The last person who put XP on it DIDN'T use the factory restore procedure, and they may have damaged the restore partition.

I think the Acer restore requires the restore partition.

I wish I had more insight into what the Acer restore process needs - in the way of partitioning - to proceed normally. I guess it's time to learn how to partition the ZG5.

    Thanks/Cheers!

Just use a generic XP disc to install in and download all the drivers/software from Acer's website. That will make your life a lot simpler than trying to fight with a restore partition.
