Acer Aspire One AOA 150 - Changing Wireless Card
(10 posts)-
I am wanting to install an integrated Wireless Card that is "n" capable. I am trying to avoid having a dongle hanging out of the side of the machine.
My questions are: Is there an available integrated Wireless-n card on the market for this machine? 2) can you use one of the existing antennas for the n signal? I am assuming that the two antennas are for b/g. Can I just rule out the b antenna being it really serves no purpose anymore. If not on an n network I am always on a g. The b is kind of old technology.
Any kind of help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks folks!!

sure, you can replace the wireless card with just about any minicard adapter.
I would recommend the Intel 4965 ABGN wireless card. It is very plentiful on ebay, and pretty cheap. both antennas will be used, it is not just one for G and one for N. The 4965 card will have 3 connectors, but you can use just the 1 and 2 connector with no problem.
You can also go with the newer Intel 5100 (512AN) series wireless. better battery life, but can be pricey.
Others you can consider are the broadcom 4321 (bcm94321), marvell MC85, Atheros 9281, or ralink 2920 based wireless
I prefer the marvell, broadcom, or intel 4965 as those do N on both 2.4 and 5 ghz. the others will only do N on 2.4ghz

This is excellent to know Techie. Nice to know that the one you suggest is 5.0ghz compatible also. That is what I am looking for.
One question though. I have heard the Intel one comes with three connections. What is going to be left out by using only two? Will one go to the g signal and one to the n? Just eliminating the a/b?
You help is greatly appreciated.

on the 3 connector cards, just use the 1 and 2 connector. the card will automajically change the antenna to transmit or receive, regardless of what protocol you are using. It will also change to whatever antenna it needs for signal strength.
only using 2 antenna you should still be able to get close to 300Mbps, as well as decent signal strength. nothing is really lost.

Great! Which eisiting antenna would go on the 1 spot? black or white?
Also, would it hurt to run another antenna into the monitor if I get a little frisky when I tear it down?

doesn't matter, the card automajically changes it. if you want to run another antenna, you can. just watch the routing so it does not put pressure on the lcd

Thanks again, Techie. You have been a great help and I will be well on my way to having a blazing good time with this Netbook. Going to upgrade the Ram while I am at it too ;-)

I have the same question, but for an Aspire 4730z. Would your above response apply, or would there be different hardware and/or install process? Appreciate any advice that you have. Thanks.
