    Hi there.

I just got my hands on a 120 GB A150, and I am extremely happy!

However, I want to use my external DVD drive (an LG Slim) to install Ubuntu 8.10 now.

It was working fine before pre-boot. I could get an Ubuntu 7.10 installer CD active and running, got as far as the menu screen.

Then I made a huge mistake, and updated the BIOS to version 3309...

...and why is that a mistake? Well, only since then, I've not been able to get the USB DVD detected preboot! The CMOS settings screen say there is a USB FDD connected, but there isn't anything connected at the moment. It says the same thing when there is something connected.

I can use the USB drive IN Windows. But what good is that, I need to be able to boot from the disc to get what I need done!

Is there a fix? A BIOS update in the works? Can I force a downgrade? Should I just wait?

Update: OK, now it says USB-CDROM and correctly lists what kind it is but still unbootable. Like it doesn't believe the disk has anything interesting on it?

have exact sam problem with an LG DVDROM. Its the only external drive I can get hold of. Did you find a solution? My bios is at 3114. Wondering if you flashed yours.

    Cheers

I would recommend bios 3309 for your aspire one, helps prevent that whole bricking issue.

as for the optical drive, I have seen some external drives that pull just a bit too much power from 1 usb port that sometimes the unit will not detect it in the bios. You can try an 2 port cable for extra power or use an AC adapter for the drive.

if it is detected but will not boot try burning another copy of your ubuntu disc, and if that doesn't work it could be a bad optical drive. However, it is probably just a bad disc/bad burn.
