Acer Aspire One shut down issue
(88 posts)-
Finally,I worked out a method and it does works.(90% of this problem could be fan stop working cause overheat protection)
First, Do make sure power off. then gently tap 5 to 10 times (near by ventilation system).
Restar all fixed. ~~~~~~finger cross!Posted 2 years ago # -
So...
I had the problem with my Aspire One shutting down even as it was booting up.
I was pretty frustrated for an hour or so.
Then I left it plugged in for a couple of hours and the battery recharged! :)
Yeah, the icon said the battery had a charge - but the battery light was orange - when the battery charged up and the light turned green - everything has been fine.

I had the same problem and fortunately came across this forum. Tried the ac off / battery off / press start 20 secs stuff but didn't work.
Finally it was a fan problem, and tried the highly technical solution proposed by Monkeylovebanana and...it worked too well! The fan got unstuck and now everything is running properly.
Thanks to all of you.

I am having the same problem with my Aspire One. I purchased it in January 2009 and all of a sudden it does not want to load programs. It clicks off anywhere between 10-30 seconds. I attempted the battery removal, hold power button trick that was suggested and nothing. I don't know what else to do. I asked for assistance from ACER through email support and attempted to call thier service number, I got kicked off of that. So what is the best trick without voiding out the warranty.

I registered for this site just to thank monkeylovebanana for his crazy solution to this problem.
I cannot freaking believe that worked THAT well THAT quickly. I encourage everyone with this issue to beat the hell out of their laptop in the future.
THANK YOU!

Well this happened to me about 1 month ago since then I've sent my acer in 3 times. They replaced the fan, then replaced the hard drive. Which was a temporary fix. Now this time they are replacing the hole computer for the fact it was defective and un-fixable. But I did notice if I let my battery die because mine would reboot after shutting off each time and then taking the battery out and plugging it back in and charging it I was able to use if for about 6hrs till it crashed and shut down and repeated the process.

PROBLEM SOLVED! THE FAN IS DEFECTIVE! MY ACER ASPIRE ONE CAME WITH A SUNON MAGLEV GC054006VH-A FAN. THIS FAN HAS 3 WIRES. GREY, RED AND BLACK. GREY IS +, BLACK IS - AND RED IS THE WIRE THAT LETS THE COMPUTER KNOW THE FAN IS RUNNING. FOR SOME REASON THERE IS A DEFECT TO THE FAN MOTOR. COMPUTER BELIEVES THAT THE FAN IS NOT RUNNING AND TO AVOID OVERHEATING THE COMPUTER SHUTS DOWN IN 10 TO 30 SECONDS. IN MY CASE, I TESTED THE FAN AND THE WAS NOT WORKING. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW THE TEST THE FAN, SIMPLY PULL A HAIR OFF YOUR HEAD AND HOLD IT NEXT TO THE LEFT SIDE VENT. IF THE FAN IS WORKING THE HAIR SHOULD SHOW GOOD MOVEMENT. IF NOT, YOUR FAN IS NOT WORKING. RESOLUTION IS TO REPLACE THE FAN. THIS IS A HARDWARE PROBLEM AND NOT A SOFTWARE PROBLEM. I PURCHASED MY FAN FROM EBAY $39. MAKE SURE YOU PURCHASE ONE THAT IS NEW! LOTS OF GOOD INFO ON THE WEB ON HOW TO OPEN UP YOUR LAPTOP. SAME WAY AS IF YOU ARE UPGRADING YOUR RAM. If you do not want to install it, any computer tech can install it. ALMOST RAN MY LAPTOP OVER WITH THE TRUCK BUT AFTER 2 WEEKS OF TESTING ALL OF THE DEVICES, IT CAME DOWN TO THE FAN. THE LAPTOP IS BACK AND RUNNING. I AM ONCE AGAIN A FAN OF ACER.

I just experienced this issue with my Aspire One. I purchased this computer new in January of '09 and other than an accidental uninstall of acer's launch manager (which i reinstalled so my headphones would still work..) this is the first issue I've really come across.
Same symptoms as the rest that have posted here, I'm running on the large HD and not the SSD option, 1 gb of ram, xp. I experienced shut down during the first few seconds of the windows boot, I launched in bios and experienced the same shut down.
Removing the battery and switching to just AC power was not a solution either.
To be honest I hit the bottom a few times with the flat side of my palm and she is now up and running again, what year are we living in, folks?
I will return to post whether this is a permanent fix, or how soon the issue returns.

Wow. So I just received a new Aspire One, 1.6ghz, 160GB RAM and it wouldn't boot for longer than 30 seconds right out of the box. I tried the method of unplugging it, pulling the battery, pressing the power button for 20 seconds but no luck.
Then I read "monkeylovebanana"'s comment and did notice that I couldn't hear a fan running when I powered it up. I powered it up and then tapped (OK, I really slapped it) on the bottom and sure enough, the fan finally kicked in. It's whirring away and running fine now. I'm not happy that this is the "solution" and am glad for the one-year warranty as I suspect this could happen again.

After looking through all these posts, I did some experimenting. One, the unit (acer aspire one) shuts down after 30 seconds, very suddenly.. including in the BIOS screens. This completely illiminates any logical issues (OS, virus, etc). The shut off (not even down.. just sudden off) is very abrupt, so obviously its hardware related. So I removed all physical components one at a time, and got the same result. (with just MB board, RAM, Display, and keyboard.) So I removed the heatsink on the processor, and removed the crappy thermal tape, and put a dab of heat sink compound where the processor sits, and where one of the controllers sits. Tested again.. and WALA!!!.. no shutdown!..
I bet MONEY its the same issue for everyone else. Thermal TAPE is horrible.. dab some thermal compound on it, and screw it tight. I have had no shut down at all now.. Hope this works for everyone else!!

I can't believe it, but the tapping worked.
The unit is an Acer Aspire One (1GB DDR2-533 RAM, 160GB Hard drive, Windows XP). It worked normally for five weeks out of the box. This morning it shut down suddenly ~60 sec after power up. Got the same fault again, (~10 tries) including BIOS screens, before we found this thread.
Not wishing to void the warranty, we gave the computer 10 gentle raps on the bottom side, and tried again. Successful bootup.
If I put my ear to the unit I can hear the fan running.
Many thanks to MonkeyLoveBananas.

indeed this problem is about the fan issue.. i had mine a day ago, then finally was able to go to a friend's house to use surf the net, and found this thread.. the reason for the shutting down thingy is about the security reasons, since the fans doesn't run, the system shuts down instead of continue running and may harm other parts especially the processor..
i got my idea from monkeylovebanana..
hitting the down part didn't work for me, what i did was to blow the ventilation part which would forcely run the fan the other way around, and will run back the normal direction after it..
and viola! done! i already heard the fan running, and continued using my one..
goodluck guys! take care!

Another satisfied customer...thank you monkeylovebanana, I actually never would have thought about just tapping around the ventilation unit, but I'll be darned, that fixed it.
Thanks!

Impressive! The "tapping method" from monkeylovebanana works!! Thank you very much!
I only registered first to thank you!
I bought my Aspire One one month ago. When I received, there was a battery problem then I returned it. The new one received from the store (online buy) was not new and had issues on the LCD.
Then I got this one...and the shut off problem!
I was almost giving up from the store and also the Acer....but thank to monkeylovebanana, I am happy again!!
Thanks!!
See youuuPosted 2 years ago # -
I have to say the"tapping method" has worked for me too (so far anyway). I did the off/on/battery/AC power recommendation as well but that didn't work for me. I was frustrated and ready to send in my lil aspireone for service but thanks to monkeylovebanana now I don't have to. Yayy!! Im glad I found this site.

Thanks for the messages, but nothing worked to fix my problem...and I tried the solutions written by blacky, fckacer, alvin, tripzero, monkeylovebanana, Hagglegirl.
I appreciate yazbaz's post as well as other folks who said it is a fan problem.
I've got an AOA110 with SSD. Brand new. Shuts off in 30 seconds or less.
I called Acer. She had me do the 20 second hold-power button deal. No effect. Then she told me: After you press power, when you see the Acer logo, hold ALT and press F10 three times quickly (to enter recovery mode). Nothing happened when I did that (and I tried 3 times), it just attempted to load Windows and then shut off as usual.
She said that she could send a recovery CD at no charge but I would need a 2GB USB to do the install. Then I told her what I learned from this website that it is a fan problem. I asked her if I should hear a fan noise or feel air around the fan opening when I turned it on. She said yes. I told her there was no noise or air at all. How is that for helping tech support? Don't they have troubleshooting guides they use? Don't they google the web?
She then told me to ship the netbook to Acer...AT MY COST. I kindly questioned this and reminded her that it is new, out of the box today. She said I would have to pay the shipping. I just hung-up on her without saying any more.
I then contact JR.com by phone (where I bought it) and told the rep. what happened. They offered to replace the PC or refund AND PAY FOR ALL SHIPPING COSTS. I will try for a replacement. If that one is bad, then I will return it again and not buy Acer.
FYI.

Great forum! I just love my Acer Aspire ZG5, but the it shut down after 30 seconds and turned off all power. I perused this forum and gleaned some ideas as to what to do. I did have any compressed air, but decided to try cleaning the internal fan by blowing into the fan vents by the external power cord area (fan located nearby inside!) and it worked!!!
I strongly suggested trying this before making any BIOS changes or opening your system for a look see. Hope this helps!

Copying from one post -> registered for this site just to thank monkeylovebanana for his crazy solution to this problem.
I just opened my brand new 1 hour-old acer and it wouldn't boot. Tried the unplug AC and bat but to no extent! Then I tapped it gently like a baby, and voila! I can't believe it! my goodness! I was close to crying since I bouht mine in the USA and had it shipped here to the Philippines by a friend! If it weren't for monkeylovebanana, I would have had a useless laptop that I could never return!!! Thank you monkeylovebanana!

I can’t believe it. I just had to register because of monkeylovebanana. Kudos to ya. This is the second time hitting a laptop fixed it. My first was a Compaq about 10 years ago. It wasn't doing what was expected of it so I slammed both hands down on the key board real hard like and it spit out the most god-awful sound I ever heard come out of a computer and worked without question for years. (Still have it) This time was just a couple love taps. Thanks monkeylovebanana! You saved a large headache and have probably recruited more registered users than anyone else on this forum.

Hey guys I bought my AA1 in January and today the 5th of May it started to shut down after a couple of secs.I tried everything and believe it or not monkeylovesbananas technique worked.lol.I tapped the vent 6 times and turned on.The thhing came on and stayed on.It has to be the fan.

I can't believe it, but I had the shut-down problem for the first time today, despaired, searched for help on the Internet, found this forum, went and slapped my Acer Aspire One on the butt a few times, and... no more problem.
(My Aspire One is about 6 months old. This is the first time I've had any problem whatsoever.)

Thank you monkeylovebanana! It is now working perfectly!

From what I read there are 2 separate issues that could be to blame for the 30 second shutdown issue.
1. The fan stopped working, and the your aspire overheated. Gently tap to get fan spinning again. This worked for me.
2. Capacitor issue. Your Aspire was built using cheap capacitors. Holding down the power button with no power / battery for 20 seconds clears out the capacitors and allows your aspire to start normally.
Most likely the fan is broken or hanging up. Very easy to happen. Mine got hung with a gentle tap, A few good wacks put it back into shape.
Hope this helps!

Same issue - shutdown after a few seconds. Couldn't hear a thing so I gave her a gentle pat and sure enough the fan started spinning and she started purring again. I recommend keeping an eye, or an ear, on the fan for a while, though.
Thanks guys!Posted 2 years ago # -
Well thanks for saving me from a giant headache. After being on hold with refurb warranty support (apparently acer doesn't honor warranties on refurbs, they do it through Seneca Data) I found this post and hit the thing a couple times and problem solved!
In my case, though, the shutting down at random times had corrupted my windows install because it shut down right out of the box while windows was configuring. As posted above, what you have to do is hit Alt-F10 a few times at POST to reinstall Windows from the hidden clean copy on the computer.
Running fine now and all is well!

Hey Blacy, your experiment by holding power down and unplugging cord and battery worked as a charm for me.
I got this laptop today and first thing it happened was shutting off after 8 seconds in the boot process. did it like 15 times till I read your comment and now it boots normal and stays up all I wanted to.
regards, u save me a headache so I don't have to send this back for repairs

This is no lie.
I received a refurbished acer aspire one that
was DOA. It powers up but shuts off power
even when in the bios screen after about 30 seconds.Called Acer tech support.
They said to hit the unit on the backside
on the raised round area on bottom of unit.
This is where the internal fan resides.
Hit it with butt of screwdriver handle, or wrap it with your knuckles. Tech support said this is
a common problem with the fan sticking. There
is an rpm sensor that shuts off power to the
unit when the fan is not spinning. This worked. You can hear the fan spinning
if you put your ear close to it. My unit
works for now, it boots up.Really high tech advice straight from acer:
if your unit does not work, hit it.Hope this information helps someone.
Don't hit poor netbook too hard.

Big thanks to monkeylovebanana! I was a bit sceptical but gave it a go and worked first time. I guess it is true..when in doubt hit it a clout..thanks sooo much!

Hi guys, I´m a new member,
my problem was Acer One Shutting down
I have done everything ACER recomends (BIOS issues) and all your raccomandations, the only one that works was the tappin one.Yes, tap the case bottom, near the fan, while your computer is startin... and it´s all folks
It is or a thermal switch or a fan issue, but it´s mechanical, so tapping works
Enjoy your Aspire One
It´s a little marvel
