Acer desktop intermittent problem resuming from hibernation

    Hi there,

I have an Acer Aspire ASE700-EQ662A desktop computer. Occasionally when resuming from hibernation I encounter a strange problem - the fan starts whirring at full speed and the computer just sits there and does nothing. The monitor is completely blank. Clearly it's "locked up" somehow. If I press and hold the power button to force it to power down (which it does) and then I press the power button again, it does the same thing. The only way to resolve this is to literally pull the plug from the back of the computer, as well as to unplug the network cable. Plug it back in, power it on and it recovers from hibernation properly (albeit pulling all info from the hard drive).

Generally, this only occurs if I am trying to get an immediate "wake-up" upon hibernation - ie. clicking the mouse while it is going into hibernation. So for example, I click "hibernation" and it starts shutting down, and while this is happening I say "oops I forgot something" and click the mouse several times so that it will come out of hibernation immediately - this is usually when it happens. However, on random other occasions it will happen as well.

The machine is 2.5 years old and it has done this since day one. I've lived with it because "pulling the plug" is an ok workaround (always works, after all) but I'm kind of tired of this. I'm using Vista SP2 with all updates applied. I've checked the ACER website but they don't even list this model. Any help is welcome!

Make sure that you've got all the updates for your operating system and then get the latest video card driver as well. That solves the majority of issues when using the hibernation feature.
