    Hey :)

I am just curious as to whether or not you could tell me the differences between these models.

I am looking to buy an acer aspire 5738. but i dont know which particular model i should lean towards. Obviously i want the best performance and the higher the Hard drive the better.

I have assumed that the 32MN and 50MN relates to the hard drives capacites... But im not sure as to what the other numbers and letters mean.

What does the 434G and 664G mean? What does the Z mean?

I have been on the acer website and tried to research at as best possible, but i feel i am too computer illiterate to understand what all the small differences are and which ones are better.

Which one has DDR2 ram and which one has DDR3?

Thanks in advance and i hope you can help me out.

OK, let’s have a look at the specs from the acer.co.uk site.

    AS5738G-664G32MN
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, Intel® Core™2 Duo processor T6600 (2.2 GHz, 800 MHz FSB), 4GB Memory, 320 GB HDD, 15.6" HD Acer CineCrystal™ LCD, DVD-Super Multi DL drive, ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570, Multi-in-1 card reader, Acer Nplify™802.11a/b/g/n, Acer Crystal Eye webcam

    AS5738ZG-434G50MN
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, Intel® Pentium® processor T4300 (2.1 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2 cache), 4GB Memory, 500 GB HDD, 15.6" HD Acer CineCrystal™ LCD, DVD-Super Multi DL drive, ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570, Multi-in-1 card reader, Acer Nplify™ 802.11b/g/n, Acer Crystal Eye webcam

The difference here appears to be with the CPU. The AS5738G-664G32MN has the better chip.
I can’t find AS5738G-664G50MN so to see the difference let’s take a look at two intermediate models:

    AS5738-644G50MN
    Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium, Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T6400 (2.13GHz, 2M Cache, 800 MHz FSB), 15.6" Acer CineCrystal™ LED LCD, 4GB RAM, 500GB 5400rpm Hard Disk Drive, 8x DVD-RW, Shared graphics, 802.11a/b/g/Draft-N Wi-Fi CERTIFIED® solution, 6 cell Li-ion Battery (3.5 Hours), 5 in 1 card reader (SD), (MMC), (MS), (MS PRO), (XD), 0.3 HD MP Crystal Eye Webcam

    AS5738G-664G32MN
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, Intel® Core™2 Duo processor T6600 (2.2 GHz, 800 MHz FSB), 4GB Memory, 320 GB HDD, 15.6" HD Acer CineCrystal™ LCD, DVD-Super Multi DL drive, ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570, Multi-in-1 card reader, Acer Nplify™802.11a/b/g/n, Acer Crystal Eye webcam

The difference here appears to be the Operating System. “644” is Windows Vista and you don’t want that (I think).

“G” means discrete graphics or in other words it has a dedicated graphics card.

I'm also sure you've got the MN value correct but I confess to not knowing what Z stands for (I'll ask though).

Each country specs its own and here I’ve used the UK site to see what the specification is. Are you from the UK?

As far as system memory or RAM is concerned, I just logged into the Acer Knowledge Base and found this. All 5738 have DDR3 SDRAM.

    System memory
    Dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM support
Up to 4 GB of DDR3 1066 MHz memory, upgradeable to 8 GB using two soDIMM modules (for 64-bit OS)
Up to 2 GB of DDR3 1066 MHz memory, upgradeable to 4 GB using two soDIMM modules (for 32-bit OS)

    Hope that helps

Thankyou very very much. Much appreciated.

I hope you do end up finding out what that z means.

I am not from the uk i am from Australia. So i am not sure what differences that will make.

From the Australian Acer website, these are the links for the two models.

Judging by the list of specifications. Which one do you think is better in your opinion?

A few of the differences i noticed are that the 5738g has a "Intel® Core™2 Duo processor with up to 3 MB L2 Cache" whereas the 5738zg has only a "Intel® Pentium® dual-core mobile processor with up to 1 MB L2 Cache". I use the word "only" there because of the MB sizes, and i must confess to actually having no idea which one is better than the other. Haha.

The 5758g has a Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset whereas the z has a Mobile Intel® GL40 Express Chipset. Do you know which is better?

I could keep listing and listing with more questions. As there is about 10 or so little differences. But i think i might just let you go to the site yourself and compare. Im sorry if im looking into it a bit much. I just want to be sure of which is the better to buy.

The 5738G will be the higher performing laptop of the two. The "Z" in Acer units seems to indicate lower overall performance. The GM45 Chipset from Intel is the better of the two as well.

If you want the best performance be sure to get one with the Radeon 4570 in it.
