got lucky and bought an Aspire 5920-6864 that was not turning on. My friend looked at it and said he thought it was the motherboard. I have a few questions: is the motherboard itself repairable? if it has to be replaced, are there interchangeable motherboards or do I have to go with the exact one that I had? anyone have one that they would part out?

It doesnt turn on, so you mean 'no power'?

    No power could be:
    -adapter
-powerboard (does the battery charge LED burn?)
    -mainboard

You could fix the mainboard, if you have the skills and knowledge to find the cause of the no power problem. And yes there are some different model mainboards for the AS5920.

    You could check:

    thanks for responding!

I plug the power cord in and there are lights as if power is going to it, but will not actually power up.

The LED light does come on. But I pressthe power button and nothing happens.

I am not that skilled, but have a friend that looked at it and said he thought it was the motherboard. I have looked everywhere on the web and have had very limited luck in finding a motherboard and am not exactly sure what the model for the motherboard is and what is comparable.

I am afraid of the places that want you to send it there, just not a trusting person. So any clue as to my options?

If you want to be sure of what is going on take it to a certified technician who can properly diagnose the system. Don't use some guy who advertises in the paper or a friend. The chances of them having the proper tools and experience are very slim. Go to a reputable place to get the work done.
