Aspire 6930Z - Hard Disc Upgrade
(4 posts)-
I want to swap the hard disc for another, so I can play around with Ubuntu, etc. The incumbent hard drive is a 250GB Seagate Momentus 5400.4 SATA(ST9250827AS). What is the largest HDD that this machine will support? Also, will there be any benefit from installing one of the 7200 rpm Momentus drives?

The system supports the 7200.4 SeaGate drive, but from benchmark tests, the heat value produced by that drive will cause issues.
The current largest hard drive it supports is pretty much limitless (up to the conventional limits of about 4TB) but seeing as the largest-capacity HDD out there is 500GB, I don't think that's much to worry about. 500GB drives work in this model.
The only real difference in terms of 5400RPM vs 7200RPM is computer speed and power consumption. Also reliability, but that's another issue. There is a tomshardware guide out there that benchmarked the WD5000BEVT (500GB 5400RPM 2-platter WD hard drive) and the 7200.4 500GB Momentus (500GB 7200RPM 3-platter Seagate hard drive) among other drives and the two drives came out pretty much on top, with the 7200.4 inching out the WD5000BEVT, however due to reliability standards, I chose the WD5000BEVT.
Note: Care should be taken if/when taking out the stock hard drive (which actually should be a Fujitsu!) After unscrewing the cover plate, lift UP the part where the connection is. Do not force ANYTHING. It should slide right up.

Thanks for that, Noober. I'll probably go for a 5400 rpm drive. It's probably not worth that extra performance on a laptop, anyway. The WD looks good, and 500MB is a good size. I have seen a 1TB, somewhere, but it's silly money.

I upgraded my Acer 5920G 250gig drive to a
Seagate
Momentus
7200.4 500GB
7.2K 2.5-inch
SATA Hard
Drive
ST9500420ASGworks fine, upgrade carried out two to three months ago with no problems.
Didn't notice much difference in speed between 5400 and 7200 though but the extra space was very welcome.Posted 2 years ago #
