Aspire 9300 bios v.1.20
(6 posts)-
Can anyone please explain why the BIOS v1.20 download for the Aspire 9300 does not come with a warning that it does not support 4gb RAM ?

because 4gb was never officially supported on that unit.

Ok, thats a fair point. I never knew that. I've always used 4gb - and the system reports it as 4gb also - so just assumed it was always supported.
Many thanksIncidentaly, I updated the BIOS to v.1.20 for my ageing Dad last December and the laptop failed to boot. It was some time before I found out about the 4gb RAM problem so in the meantime he bought himself a new system. However, all is not lost I guess as I gained a new laptop, albeit a clunky old 9300, which now has v.1.9 BIOS and its' 4gb back ;)

Yeah they may have removed support for 4GB even booting in 1.20. The only way you'd know is if you take a stick of ram out and try to boot with it. Since it was never officially supported it *could* have happened. But really that would be so rare I can't really imagine it happening unless there were several documented cases of 4GB ram really messing with something in the system, which could happen depending on the chipset and the BIOS itself. More than likely though the laptop just died.

Actually my acer aspire manual says it does support 4GB in a 64 bit system. I'm now in Win 7 at 64 bit but can not get it to accept 4GB. Can I safely attempt a bios update from 1.20 to 1.9? Will that work? I was told my mass storage controller is not functioning and has NO drivers. I'm really not happy with Acer they have not been responsive since the day I got this. It came with Win XP with a free Vista upgrade that never worked well EVER. So I went to Win 7 now my memory card slots won't work no bluetooth, camera only works in Win Live Messenger, microphone problems. This Acer never had audible speakers worth using and again no mass storage controller drivers and who knows what else. I rarely ever used this thing. NOT HAPPY WITH ACER. Any help????? Should I really pay $29.00 for the advertised driver update crooks is it worth it will they have ALL drivers? Please help with a response.

Have you tried installing Acers Vista Drivers for that unit in Compatability mode in Win7?
