Battery problem
(17 posts)-
Hallo friends,
I have a problem with the battery. Sometimes when I the power-adapter connected, the battery discharges very quickly to 0% and the notebook shutdown without notification. At that moment I cannot boot the notebook without the battery and with the power-adapter connected. I have to try several times and the battery is charging again. But sometimes till 40 or 50%, then it discharges very quickly again. When the battery is fully charged and use only the hibernate option, it will stay charged for a long time again, sometimes the whole week. I don't think the battery is broken because the notebook doesn't work without the battery when this problem occurs. Is this a known problem?
Best regards,
Boekestoe

Odd problem, sounds like mainboard problem if you need adapter & battery plugged in for it to boot up.
What model of notebook is it ?

As slipster said, it's probably the mainboard. The connection might be loose, which would cause the instability in terms of charging (which is why your battery will die or thrive) and also the shutdown without the battery. Those are usually the first culprits...

I think the connection is not loose because the battery indicator on the taskbar tells me the power-adaptor is connected. Weird thing, when I disabled that the battery was Microsoft ACPI, the battery charged again. Only problem is that I cannot see anything in the taskbar anymore, only in front of the touchpad the orange led turned green after a while.

Oh, by the way, model 8920G.

with that being said, I say bad battery. probably has a bad cell.

I have found the power connector cable on that particular model to be troublesome. The four (2xred, 2xblack) cables attached to the DC in connector may also be the root cause of your issues.
Its one of those jobs where I would pull out a test battery and dc in cable and see what happens, if no change then I would be replacing the mainboard.

The problem is that I have no spare power-adapter. So I cannot test. I have thought about buying a new battery, if this was not the problem I would have a spare battery. Usefull for on the road. But I can hardly believe the battery is the problem. Why, after removing the battery, the notebook will not start with the power-adapter? Why does the battery empty in such a hurry with the power-adapter connected? Sometimes within 20 minutes.

For the darnedest of reasons it sounds like the battery is only getting a part charge, which would constitute a loose mainboard connection wire. That would also explain the shutoff w/o battery.
You shot that idea down originally, but I have a question about that: When you have it plugged in, does it at all switch from battery to plug power randomly when it's actually plugged in at all times?
Edit to avoid double post:
Also, you said you don't have a spare adapter sitting around to experiment with - that's fine. Any local electronics retailer will have a generic laptop/notebook charger that charges somewhere around 1,000 laptop models. Yours is probably on there. Head to one of these stores and pick one up, then try that. If it works, either keep it or return it and find the same one cheaper.
Batteries.. they're specialty so probably shouldn't bother trying that.

I hope I understand your question correctly. When I have selected the battery as Windows ACPI and I plug the AC power in, sometimes I have to do that several times before I see at the taskbar that it has switched to AC power. Strange thing is that the brightness of my screen always goes up, so the notebook somehow registers it as connected.

Ok. That's sounding like it's a bad connection on the mainboard, lest as far as my experience has taught me. The mainboard SEES the connection is there, registers it in terms of "Connected" or "Not connected" but doesn't transfer power to the battery until it's been plugged in for the 12th time.
I could be wrong, but that's what my experience has shown me.

The way you described the problem it sounds exactly like I experience it. Sometimes I had to plug it 4 or 5 times before the battery was actualy charging. The only way of checking that was to see if the percentage of the batterypower was going up or down. When even it is going up 1%, I know that is actualy charging. But I am only sure that the battery will stay charged (with ac power connected, is when the battery is fully charged. From that moment on, using only hibernating, it will function.
When I turn of the Windows ACPI, my changes for actualy fully charging will increase.
Your conclussion is the same I came upon, but I needed an second opinion from someone who knowes what he is talking about. Thanks very much for you help.
I have still one years warrenty on it, I'm glad I have an insurance on my notebook. In about two weeks I have my holidays. I think that is the perfect time to send it towards RMA Acer.Posted 2 years ago # -
No problem. This is more than likely something the service center can fix. Just be sure to back everything up before you send it off (I'm sure you know the drill.)
Thanks for posting. :-)

Hahaha, the backing up is the reason why I wait untill my holidays. The bigger the HD, the more trouble to backup your stuff. What to keep and what to throw away? Will cost me a lot of hours. Thanks for your advice!

i have a acer aspire 9300 but the battery is dead the last screen on the laptop was error please insert disc to reboot. for the last four weeks or so we have had trouble charging the battery and even with the charger connected the battery level has dropped from 100% to critical about 10%. i dont suspect the charger as i only replaced it 3 months ago, but i cant rule it out.maybe its dirty contacts between the power jack on the laptop to the charger or the power jack connector has a poor internal connection ie loose solder connection. has anyone come across a bad power conn problem or is it just on my laptop.either a new battery or laptop repair may be the only options for me.

Sorry for the year bump, but I am also experiencing this problem.
Any ideas what caused it, since my laptop is out of warranty, and what could be done to fix it?
Is it just a lose connection, or will the mainboard have to be replaced?Posted 1 year ago # -
Just got it fixed from acer
Since I know how annoying it is when people get the problem fixed but they never are seen again, here is what repair was done.-Replaced Hdd dc pin
