Hi marko3296,
I am having the same problems with my 8920 since installing the latest ie 8.
I have tried backing up my password bank and reinstalling the Bio protection software but this still has no effect. I have been into as many settings as I could find in ie 8 but can not see anything obvious, like you I hope there is not a compatability issue and if so do you know a way of returning to the old ie.
Lets hope someone can shed some light on this.

Hi ihmix,
Today i installed Firefox, still the same.
If you go to microsoft web site. you can find the older versions of explorer for download, even 6 and 5. But i want to play with this a bit more.Than i will probably do the same.
Let me know if you hear anything new..Posted 10 months ago # -
Just found an answer in one of the older posts...we need ie7 back
The Acer GuyContactAboutArchivesForumHow-ToNewsReviewsVideosHomeIE8 and BioProtection
posted by Michael Walsh on May 7th, 2009(1)I’m writing this piece as there have been many, many requests both here and on the forum about IE8 and BioProtection. Many many thanks to Simone for helping me understand the “technical” side of it.A lot of you have downloaded IE8 from Microsoft and now the BioProtection software you used while surfing the web no longer works.
Here’s the deal:
IE8 has been officially launched for XP and Vista, so the situation is:
IE8 and BioProtection with XP and Vista
IE8 and BioProtection on computers running XP and Vista do not work together, just as BioProtection doesn’t work with Firefox / Opera / Chrome / Safari etc.. More precisely, it’s PasswordBank that doesn’t work and this is the part that manages the accounts for Live / Gmail and so on.Right now it’s compatible only with IE7 – the BIOS protection part and WindowsLogon part continue to work with XP and Vista.
IE8 was released AFTER BioProtection, therefore it’s going to take a little time to bridge the gap between the two versions. Right now Acer’s in the middle of this “gap” but we’re working on it. We shouldn’t be far off considering what Simone’s seen to date.
IE8 with Windows 7
Here the situation is much more complicated, given the fact that even Microsoft says that IE8 for Windows 7 isn’t “exactly” the same as the version already released for XP/Vista.Adding to the confusion, the Operating System is still in what’s called “RC” or Release Candidate stage. This is one step behind “RTM” or Release To Manufacturer, which is when you’ll see it on general release.
Two points:
a) “RC” software is “officially” available only to software developers and partners, not to the general public, who should be able to download it in the next few weeks.
b) OEMs such as Acer don’t start developing drivers the moment Win7 goes public. In actual fact, Acer doesn’t develop the drivers at all for the devices in its computers, it simply uses those developed by the device manufacturers (maybe with some customization). But when they do they don’t exactly start from scratch…
In a nutshell, then, until Win 7 becomes “RTM”, it’s not in Acer’s (or all the other PC manufacturers’) interest to release a finished product (notebook / desktop) as it would come without the complete support of all functions.
And until it reaches “RTM”, it’ll be difficult if not impossible to find all the drivers, simply because Win7 or the driver itself is still evolving…

Hi,
I have tried to reinstall some older versions of ie but with no luck and the only ie7 I found is for xp and not the vista version. This is starting to give me a headache now, I am pretty good on computers but this is doing my head in. I have backed up my password bank so that should be ok but no luck with finding the correct ie, have you had any luck yet your end???
If you can find the link to ie7 for vista then I would be very greatful.
Keep me updated of your current position.
Many Thanks,
ihmix

hey,
You dont have to install the ie7. all i did is removed ie8, and ie7 just came back on its own. I did not have to install it again.
In either case you have to remove the ie8 anyway cos i found ie7 for download but it didnt want to install it cos it sayd i already have an updated version installed so it didnt let me to downgrade it.
My fingerprint reader is back to normal...

Hi,
Fantastic news I have got back my fingerprint reader after uninstalling ie 8, I would like to say a big thankyou to you for keeping this thread going. It is great to see a problem resolved when all things look lost, lets hope they bridge the gap in ie 8 soon so we can make use of the new features. I may email microsoft so they are aware of the compatibality issue.
Anyway thanks again,
ihmix.

I downloaded and installed Utek Protector Suite 2009 Preview from the Utek website and everything works fine for me - including passwords and IE8

Not for sure but I could not get the computer to bot after IE8 install. Had to reinstall the factory software install and reload all my software to get my computer back. Pulled my drive from the 8930 and used an SATA to USB adaptor to retrieve my files off the Acer drive before doing the factory restore.

Apparently there are many biometric solutions which DON'T work with IE8 (until now I did not hear of any one that works).
Using biometrically-protected password banks is an addictive thing, especially with the ever growing number of sites requiring login, often clicking a link and needing to enter new login information before seeing the contents under the respective link. For the past two years I've been using a Lenovo R61i with fingerprint reader and password manager. Now I am using an Acer Aspire 8930G with fingerprint reader, Acer Bio Protection AAV and password bank (Vista Business 32 SP1). Different solutions, same result: they are working with IE7, not with IE8.
It's pretty sad that I have to still use IE7 (mainly because I get many links in mail that lead to sign-in protected sites) as long as Windows Update is proposing IE8 as an important update already for a long time.
Because of the number of different non-working biometric solutions I do think there should be something to be done from IE8 side, like passing compatible messages while in sign-in screens between IE8 and any biometric software. There probably is a certain form of messages or protocol that IE7 is using, and biometric software recognize... Hope these aren't patented :D Otherwise... I can't wait to upgrade...
I noticed that almost all answers given on other forums until now are just wild guesses, not at all documented, most of them sending the dissapointed user to seek for a solution at the hardware provider. It is even unbelievable that a Microsoft support engineer would suggest that a driver that works well under Vista with another Microsoft product (IE7) should be upgraded to support a new VERSION of a Microsoft application (IE8)... maybe all hardware providers should re-write their Vista drivers each time a new application or application version pops on the market? If so, why do we need an OS in the end?
Maybe I am wrong and indeed this specific situation could be different than any other driver situation. But is it the responsibility of the user to convince the hardware providers to upgrade their drivers? Was this the normal way of solving problems until now? Or maybe the things are deeper than they appear, and it goes to policies for future development?Posted 8 months ago # -
Hi i have the same problem i have an Acer Aspire 6920. I want to just uninstall ie8 and i am assured my laptop will just revert to IE7. However, IE8 isnt in programmes so how do i uninstall it ? anyone please.

I had this problem and I wrote about it. Now it's fixed! I re-installed the latest driver on the ACER site and the new release of IE8 on windows update now and it works with fingerprint! Thank you ACER, thank you MSFT (updated release).

Hi Everyone,
Same problem here too. And I can't even seem to locate the driver for bio protection on my computer. In control panel I get to Device Manager which then gives me is a list of all devices but nowhere is there anything about fingerprint recognition or bio protection (two likely candidates, Human Interface Devices and Personal ID Devices had nothing in the way of fingerprint recognition or bio protection.
Clicking on the finger icon at the bottom right of screen only brings up the menu from which 'About" tells me I have v. 6.0.00.08, but not the location on HD or the name...
I did find the driver on the Acer website and it is the same version as what I have. My version of IE8 is also the latest, I am told, yet still cannot get bio protection to work (the password registration prompts I used to get with IE7 will not appear).
So how did Skocsis get it to work, I can't quite understand.
Any advice would be appreciated.

You can find the driver by going to the main Acer site
http://www.acer.com/worldwide/
then choose a country, then the 'service & supposrt' tag and from the list on the left you click 'driver download'. A box appears asking you to choose a model. Once a model is chosen, a list of drivers appears below

Any news on this?
I just checked the Acer site (UK version) and the current release is 6.0.0.00.08 dated 2009/7/14 (which was the same as I already had). As far as I can see it doesn't work with IE8 (8.0.6001.18813 - Vista SP2).
Does anyone know if there's a new version in the pipeline?

OK. I've fixed my 8920G.
I went on the Acer website support section again and looked under the downloads for the 8930G, which is a similar model to the 8920G and uses the same Validity Sensor for the fingerprint reader; for example, the 6935 and 6935G also use the same device.
In the download for the 8930g (and the 6535/6935G), there is the file for Fingerprint Solution version 6.2.39. It's quite a large file (106.2Mb) but works fine with IE8 on my 8920G.
This is the URL for download for Vista Home Basic, but it seems to be the same file whichever edition of Vista is used.
Hope this helps.
