Dual booting XP & Vista on Aspire 5920 (SATA & AHCI Driver Problem)
(5 posts)-
Hi. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.
My problem is i am dual booting vista & xp (vista came pre-loaded) on the Acer aspire 5920 [Intel X1300 version]
Everything is working as long as i set the BIOS to IDE.
Vista works with AHCI/SATA & IDE.
XP only works with IDE.However i know it CAN work with AHCI and would really like to get that sorted.
Slip streaming then via n-lite is not somthing i want to do as i know it is possible via other methods also.
I did read a guide on here about how to do it, but it is not very well written and people in the comment section are having to correct the install instructions etc...
Could anyone provide some proper, proffesional help on how to get SATA mode working with my 2nd OS (XP)
This infomation will be usefull to many people im sure.
Thanks.

you will need the intel ahci drivers for the unit, and a usb floppy drive since you don't want to slipstream
just hit F6 during the xp setup to install raid or scsi drivers.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I have the intel AHCI drivers.
I do not have a USB Floppy drive. My Windows XP OS is already loaded, i dont want to reload in order to add the drivers first.
Can this be done without having to re-install the XP os?
I'm sure there is a way involving forced driver install.
Just to be clear, slipstreaming the drivers via N-lite is the process of adding the drivers to the windows xp ISO image, right?
Thanks.

When you say you have the AHCI drivers, do you have them unpacked already? This includes the .inf files (there should be 2) and the iaStor.sys file?
If so, then copy the iaStor.sys file to your C:\Windows\System32 folder. Then, install the driver manually (DO NOT UPDATE) and look for the INF file "iaAHCI.inf" and install that. It might ask you for the location of the iaStor.sys file. Locate it and that should be it. Restart, change to SATA and all should be well.
It's been a VERY long time since I've done this but the tutorial here: http://www.theacerguy.com/2008/06/how-to-install-the-ahci-drivers-after-installing-xp-in-ide-mode/ pretty much covers every bit of it. Reread it and make sure you have done all steps and have the correct drivers. If you have a different motherboard setup (ICH7, ICH8, or ICH9,) you could be in trouble if you don't use the right one.
