Gemstone Blue - 8920G. Won't Boot up.
(6 posts)-
Okay, so last night, Avg does its scan. Comes to the end of scanning - 0 threats 18 warnings.
All the warnings appear to be just cookies, or at the quick glance i gave them, thats what they looked like. Anyway, i clicked the "Remove" or "Delete" button, or whatever avg happens to call it.. The laptop crashes halfway through removing.
Hmm, thats not good - Force a shutdown, turn it back on. First screen i see is from Acer Arcade - It installs something. Can't quite remember what happened after this point, but it certainly didn't load to the password screen. So again, another forced shutdown.
Next try - Goes to a "Vista system recovery" or something like that, i'm not quite sure what its name was. Anyway it had about 6 options, including "Get windows to check for and correct the faults on your disk" in a little bit more high tech talk. And "Restore to a earlier point". Since the "Checking and correct faults" said it was recommended, i thought i'd go for that.
It ran its tool, told me to click the restart button. Runs it again, tells me to restart again.
And now it enters its final state - Its virtually dead :|. If i turn it on, it will go to the black screen, that talks about an improper shutdown, with the options for Safe Mode, Safe mode with networking.. etc. Any of these 4 options all result in the same black screen displaying only the mouse cursor.
So there we go, anyone got any ideas? I'm thinking it was either due to what caused avg to crash.. or whatever Acer Arcade installed shortly after that.
Thanks in advance. Rhys.
Edit: For your info, the laptop itself is less than a month old, so you can imagine my frustration, of it packing up so quickly. Whilst this 3 year old aspire battles on..

Use the alt-F10 recovery option to recover the unit from the partition on the hard drive and go from there. That should be uncorrupted. If you happened to create recovery DVD's you could use those as well, but using the alt-F10 method (hitting alt-F10 at the intial BIOS splash screen to activate the recovery partition) is the best option of the two as it will save you a lot of time.

It happened exactly the same to me last week. Exactly, thouag I had not run any antivirus check. Just switched on and that Arcade Deluxe Console install screen. Afterwards, everything Rhys talked about.
If there's no other solution, I'll have to try Alt+F10 recovery option, but I'd prefer not to do so, as all my things will get lost eventually.
Any other solution?
Thanks in advance,

hi rhys,
Now i dont mean to panic you or give you false info-but ill tell you what happened to me and my 8920.
I had it 5 days and something very similar happened to me as what happened to you, except i had a blue screen of death,
I contacted acer and the first thing he asked was '' do you have avg installed?,take that how ever you want-Mine how ever was a faulty western digital hard drive, they just replaced my laptop,do as peter described alt+f10 on acer boot screen if that does not work then its a faulty hard drivePosted 2 years ago # -
Well i've found a solution, if not the best one, at least someway to recover most of the files you can. Just burn a LIVECD with Ubuntu 9.04 and boot it, you won't need to install anything, just run it. From UBUNTU desktop yuo'll eventually be able to copy all your stuff in an external harddrive.
Afterwards just alt+f10 and recover.Posted 2 years ago # -
Fyi, any linux live CD can do that for you ;)
