Memory upgrade and memory settings in BIOS.
(5 posts)-
Hi all.
I'm about to upgrade Aspire 5102 WLMi 1 GB memory to 2 GB. But some things before that..
I've learnt that this model uses DDR2 533 MHz or 667 MHz memory. In this case 2x 512 MB 667 MHz. CPU-Z says memory divider is set to 5. So, if memory divider could be set to 4, this laptop could benefit from DDR2 800 MHZ memory modules, right? I'm not aware of any chipset or memory controller limitations, so I have to ask this.
And how about the memory settings in BIOS? Nothing! :( Can these settings be unlocked somehow or is there a not-so-restricted BIOS available somewhere? Or, can BIOS set the memory divider automaticaly when new modules are installed?

Anyone has any ideas on this? No? Maybe I just get the DDR2 667 MHz modules..

stick with the 667, doubt your cpu will support 800.

Finally something, thanks =) I know that Turion64 X2 Ultra series supports 800 MHz, but I can't find any info about non-Ultra.. Basically, modules specified to higher frequencies should work with lower freq memory controller just as well (and with lower latencies, but what's the point if those can not be set in that crippled BIOS). But the world of laptops is very strange to me and I've been told that Acer laptops can be very picky on these memory subjects. So yes, I'll stick with the 667 MHz. A pair of 800 MHz modules would've been cheaper though..

Faster modules are *supposed* to be compatible with slower speeds, but through a lot of experience I have learned this "rule" quickly falls apart when you start mixing RAM.
Best to keep it all the same speed and type. And to be certain your memory configuration is stable, let memtest86+ run through at least two full passes. http://www.memtest.org/
