My Wife's Aspire: a few issues

My wife owns an Aspire 5600 (on sticker: 5601 AWI.Mi).
1: The 100G HD came partitioned as a C and D drive, each with approximately 43G. After 3 1/2 years, there remains about 6 G on the C drive, and 40 apparently wasted on the D. Can I safely move content to the D, and if so, only data files or can programs be moved as well?

2: on a daily basis, it seems, the cursor freezes up for periods of about a minute. I suspect a problem in the touch-pad but cannot articulate a reason. Any tips?

3: Finally, the computer shifts into PIO mode with some frequency. While I've learned how to recover from that after-the-fact, is there a way to keep it from recurring?

    Thank you

Since I don't actually know this model, my answers are fairly general.

    1. There is no problem about moving data from the C drive (or more specifically 'My Documents') to D drive. If you have things organized in folders, it's quite easy to just most entire folders. For example, I keep my photos folder (amongst others) on another drive; you just have to specify a different path when opening/saving the files.

Programs can only be moved when installing them, as information is stored in the registry about where they are and simply copying the programs will upset this. So to 'move' a program, you would have to uninstall and reinstall it. Of course, you can only do this if the program offers a choice of installation directory. Most do but a few don't, in which case you can't move them easily so it's best not to bother. And, of course, you need the installation media and will need to reapply any updates.

My recommendation would be to move data files, but leave the programs on C as it's the simpler option.

    2. On the cursor freeze, do you have an external mouse you can try? USB mice can be picked up quite cheaply is you don't. If you can try one and the cursor freezes when using that, then it may be a software problem. I assume you have up to date virus software. Of course, if it works fine, then you can just carry on using the mouse! 3 1/2 isn't very old, so I'd be surprised if the touchpad was wearing out, but it depends on usage etc.

    3. Not sure what you mean by "shifts into PIO mode". If you mean that the disk access mode changes from DMA to PIO in the BIOS, then this may indicate that the disk controller or connection may be faulty. If you mean something else, then ignore this.

I would suggest looking into a program called Ccleaner. It cleans out a lot of the junk files on your computer system and will most likely free up quite a bit of space on your wife's computer. Be warned though the files that are removed are being deleted. I have never had a problem with deleting everything it picks up myself. But just so you know ;)
