Recovery discs won't work!

So I bought a used Acer Aspire 5050 a few months ago and it has been working like a champ since I updated it to Windows 7 when I got it.
Yesterday morning it wouldn't boot properly and I was getting an error that read, basically:
Media test failed, cable not connected, could not find operating system.Well, no problem since I had the nice recovery discs.
However, the recovery discs stall on the initial system disc at stage 2: Checking password.
It doesn't give me a dialog box to type in any password, I'm not sure what the password would even be, and it won't highlight any recovery option other than exit.
I've contacted support a couple of times and always just get the same canned response about using the recovery discs.
Where do I go from here?
