SATA Dead?
(6 posts)-
Friend passed on a laptop for me to look at.
Basically not booting.
Just sits with a black screen/flashing cursor.
The HD does not show up in the bios list or as an option with F12 (multiboot).
Tried a brand new sata drive in there and the same problem.
Any ideas?
Is the motherboard shot?
Apsire 1502 WLMi.

Aspire 1502? that is an older model and it did not support sata drives, only PATA drives.
Aspire 5102? if so, then the mainboard went out on you. sounds like the southbridge probably failed on it.

Your right it is the 5102.
I do not have the service manual, etc so is it worth taking to a electronics expert or is it time to bin/insurance it?

BIG issue on the mainboard thats in the AS5100 (as in many others). The sata connector on the mainboard is not good, if you push on it it should/could work again, but no practical fix here. Replace the sata connector on the mainboard, or replaced the hole mainboard, either way no easy fix on this.
You could solder wires directly from the HDD to the mainboard bypassing the connector, I say you COULD ;)

i would not solder the drive directly to the board.
here is the mainboard you would need. most prices on google put it over $200 so you may want to think about a new laptop at that price.
