Sound and Explorer issues on Acer Aspire 5920

Got an Acer Aspire 5920 (with Vista home premium sp2) that I've had since 2006, which until a few days ago was working reliably, when for some reason after restarting it on the 27th I noticed that there was no sound coming out of the speakers at all whether it's listening to music, watching clips on youtube, etc though prior the speakers did seem to get a bit strained now and again only when listening to radio though it didn't sound serious at the time.

I checked on playback devices to see what the issue was and saw I only had Realtek Digital Output and Speakers, and was also told both were working fine despite no sound coming out after testing both of them.

Somehow I can still get sound on speakers (at max) though though its very poor (can hardly hear anything) and also keeps crackling now and again when I'm not trying to listen to anything.

Also at about the same time iexplore.exe began to crash a lot often within a few minutes of using it (and with only two tabs at most) as well as noticing it quickly building up to about 140.000+ k of memory (even seen 250.000-300.000+ k now and again), I've also not noticed any change when going from Explorer 7 to 8 during that time.

I honestly hope the above issues are fixable and not signs that my laptop is on its last legs or anything like that
